I always kinda felt that Towns defensive ability (right now) was a LITTLE overrated. Don't get me wrong...he's still much much better than Okafor (and that difference was a reasonable reason to make him the # 1 pick) but I just never was super impressed. He got a lot of free run help defender blocks due to the overall size/defensive ability of the UK, especially Cauley-Stein. Plenty of "highlight reel" defensive plays were him just standing in front of the rim and swatting a weak floater attempt but a guard who was just trying to get some sort of shot up against the UK defense. It looked really pretty and it certainly showed his timing and instincts, but pretty much any 7 footer with reasonable coordination could have made most of those plays if you just stuck him in front of the rim.

He has worked really hard on his body (He was very doughy when he was playing HS ball here in NJ) and has the mobility and footwork to be a really good pick and roll defender (something Okafor will NEVER be) but I don't think he's ever going to be a prolific shot blocker in the league. I could certainly be wrong, but I just think the stretches where he looked like a stud shot blocker were kind of a "rising tide lifting all boats" kind of thing.

Absolutely not. I think he'll be an above average defender with the ability to be a really, really good one. I just think that all of the big, powerful, swatted out to half-court blocks that appeared in his highlight packages kind of oversold his current ability on that end of the floor. Its very easy to look good playing defense next to WCS at the college level. It allowed him a lot of freedom and room for error. Compare that to Okafor, who was always the last line of defense and didn't have the benefit of having 2 other future NBA bigs just waiting on the bench if he picked up a couple of fouls.

Not at all trying to say Okafor showed anything close to what Towns showed on defense. (He obviously didn't. He was downright horrible on defense most of the season) Simply saying that I think the gap would have looked a whole lot smaller if their team situations were reversed.

 
Sorry to lose smith but our offer was only 500k more than clippers. They are really in a good spot to contend this year. Much deeper.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but ABC is going to debut Sat night games starting in Jan instead of doing the double header Sundays. Being I'll still be in cancer treatments this doesn't matter to me, but when I'm back to my old self, I don't see myself sitting home for a game unless it's a really good one. I quite like the Sunday double headers. :(

So, I'm watching TheTournament...for those of you who don't know what it is, I suggest checking our thetournament.com, pretty cool concept. I'll be heading to the event tomorrow. Mike Sweetney, former lottery pick of the Knicks is playing and he wasn't starting for his team, so I was curious as to why...then he checked in. Oh my...at least 350 pounds. What a disgrace. Pretty much sums up the knicks the past 10 years.

Kanter can score, no doubt, and he looks like a big man who should be able to play the pick-and-roll. But he can’t. He truly cannot.

He either doesn’t know how or doesn’t want to or just has a supreme talent for doing exactly the wrong thing whenever his man comes over to screen a guard.

Kanter’s so bad that opponents basically just call pick-and-rolls when he’s in the game, and if you can’t guard the pick-and-roll, you are doomed.

Among centers who get regular time in this league, there are several really porous defenders–and Kanter is by far the worst. He’s awful. I don’t think there’s any way he turns into even a half-way mediocre defender at any point in his career, it’s just too far gone.

(Although his one-time Jazz teammate Al Jefferson has turned into a not-terrible defender the last few years. So maybe I shouldn’t be so hasty. What do they teach those big guys in Salt Lake City?)

OKC’s on/off defensive splits: With Kanter on the floor, the Thunder gave up 113.0 points per 100 poss’s. With him off (in the games he was on the team), they gave up only 105.1 per 100.

Utah’s on/off D splits with Kanter this season: 112.1 per 100 when Kanter was on the floor, 103.5 per 100 when he was off (in the games he was on the team).

That’s two teams, one in Utah and one in Oklahoma, with almost identical large improvements precisely when Kanter was NOT in the game vs. when he was.

One more stat: Kanter registered a -3.88 DRPM this season, which ranked him 469th out of 474 total players.

Oh, and that mean point I made about Griffin only collecting 35 blocks in 67 games? Kanter only had 29 in 75 games split between Utah and OKC. And he’s 6-11.

There are only so many shots and one basketball. Would you rather spend those with Westbrook, Durant or Enes Kanter? I just think he's a questionable fit with their stars, and overpaid.

I think 10 is where you foul out.

Somebody I was reading or listening to the other day mentioned there was a big man defending well without fouling in summer league and how astonishing it was, since usually they don't pay attention to fouls at all and play a little more "highlight-searching" defense.

He's hugeA little slow, as 7'3" guys tend to be. Look forward to seeing how this guy develops under Pop. Has a nice offensive touch around the basket and I swear it looks like he could dunk flat-footed. Fade away dunk

He's a liability on defense and a limited offensive player. His post defense looks very weak for his size. They show him make some "jumpers", but his form is ugly and his release is low and in front.

His biggest strengths are pick n roll finishing and rebounding. He's actually nimble going to the hoop and he swallows boards like a vacuum.

Sweetney and his team are a ####. They are up like 60 points in the 4th quarter and still playing full-on d, stealing the ball, throwing outlets to leakers, alley-oops.
