Ok, here is the deal. Got into a conversation last night with a long time friend that happened to finally win a $100 serpentine redraft that pays out $650 to 1st place. The guy had been close a couple of times in the past, but actually never finished better than 3rd place in the previous 7 seasons. He mentioned that he tipped the serpentine redraft commisioner a small amount for 'dealing with the league' when he was paid out in late Dec.
Now, 1st off I have no suspicions off any kind of collusion in this situation...because of many reasons. Mainly, because I have played in this league since it started in 1999 and 6-7 of these guys play in multiple local leagues annually and the last thing any of us want is a discrepency of any kind. But if I was a new member in the league I could see how it would slightly concern me that perhaps this guy is 'buttering up the commish' so he would be more inclined to favor him in a decision or something in future seasons.
When I mentioned this to the current "champ", he looked at me like I was nuts and couldn't see my side of the issue. He doesn't play in as many leagues as I though, and all the leagues he plays in are with longtime friends...so I am not sure he is keeping an open mind.
So, my questions are obviously: Is it ok, right, ethical, a good gesture, ect.... to give the commish a $ tip if you win a $ league? Or is it a bad idea and could potentially lead to collusion in some situations/leagues? Thanks for any and all input on the matter....
Edited: to add that the previous 4 seasons various champs of local leagues had bought lots of beer/alcohol for NFL superbowl parties for ALL to enjoy, but never tipped $ to any single commish. I am all for sharing the wealth basically, but think if you single out the commish it is different than buying beers for 11+ other ppl at a party.
