Tipping the Commish? Nice thought or Bad idea in $ leagues... (1 Viewer)

Ok, here is the deal. Got into a conversation last night with a long time friend that happened to finally win a $100 serpentine redraft that pays out $650 to 1st place. The guy had been close a couple of times in the past, but actually never finished better than 3rd place in the previous 7 seasons. He mentioned that he tipped the serpentine redraft commisioner a small amount for 'dealing with the league' when he was paid out in late Dec.

Now, 1st off I have no suspicions off any kind of collusion in this situation...because of many reasons. Mainly, because I have played in this league since it started in 1999 and 6-7 of these guys play in multiple local leagues annually and the last thing any of us want is a discrepency of any kind. But if I was a new member in the league I could see how it would slightly concern me that perhaps this guy is 'buttering up the commish' so he would be more inclined to favor him in a decision or something in future seasons.

When I mentioned this to the current "champ", he looked at me like I was nuts and couldn't see my side of the issue. He doesn't play in as many leagues as I though, and all the leagues he plays in are with longtime friends...so I am not sure he is keeping an open mind.

So, my questions are obviously: Is it ok, right, ethical, a good gesture, ect.... to give the commish a $ tip if you win a $ league? Or is it a bad idea and could potentially lead to collusion in some situations/leagues? Thanks for any and all input on the matter....

Edited: to add that the previous 4 seasons various champs of local leagues had bought lots of beer/alcohol for NFL superbowl parties for ALL to enjoy, but never tipped $ to any single commish. I am all for sharing the wealth basically, but think if you single out the commish it is different than buying beers for 11+ other ppl at a party.

Thanks UFFLCommish, lots of input in that thread...although many ppl on different sides of the aisle it seems on this topic. I did notice that most of the ppl that actually commish leagues stated they would not accept the $ and I feel there opinion is a little more thought out than most of the random regular participants that promoted gratuity freely and liberally. Well, whatever...sorry to make another post about such a recent topic...yeah I know ---> the search function... Thanks again.

I'm kinda jealous now, the most I got from one of the ppl in the league I commish is a dvd of the matrix  of course it isn't a money league

I commish one league and I have been tipped out every year. The guys that came in 2nd, 3rd and 6th tipped me this year. The guy who came in 1st (my brother in law) did not.

I dont expect it and I dont do it for the tips, but it is nice to know that the owners know how tough it is to run a league. I basically get all my transactions for free and pay about half the league fee when all is said and done.

To be honest this is the first time I've ever heard of one player giving the commish a tip. In my experience if a league wants to reward a commish for his hard work then everyone in the league splits the cost of his entry fee..

I am the commish in my league and the top three winners usually tell me to shave 5% off their winnings. It is around $85 or so. Its like tipping a dealer in Vegas, you hit big, whats 5% for feeling "lucky"!!

Ppl can spend their money how they want but when I won this past season I didn't tip the commish and for the record I was against the league's proposal to pay for the commish's entry fee as well. The way I see being a commish is something you either want to do or don't want to do. You shouldn't do it expecting to be compensated for it. Also if I have a bad year will he give me some of my money back because I was unlucky? Of course not, nor would I expect him to.

Why do I have to be Mr. Pink? Why can't I be Mr. Blonde?
