I am wondering if we see Mariota run more than we did last year. Over a 16 game season, he projected to 336 yards which was still less than Aaron Rodgers and barely more than Blake Bortles. That was a big surprise to me. I would have expected closer to a 500 yard Alex Smith like season.
Definitely.
It's well written about that it is part of the offense. He's been practicing slides and getting out of bounds most days, if not every day. I don't know that there's another NFL QB as fast as Mariota, but the Titans had Jake Locker and Vince Young recently. The Titans have more experience with running QBs than I think most people realize. Both Young and Locker (probably from college coach) were way better runners as rookies. They had a purpose and got to the first.
The Titans messed both them up by creating running plays for them. They weren't like that. They were ad-libbers that took advantage of a lazy D or a broken play. The Vikes messed Daunte up the same way. In fact, the run plays really put them "in harm's way."
There are some Mariota running plays. There are. I haven't heard of them running them much. It sounds more like a play for a rainy day, similar to last year where he maybe ran 6-7 times on a play call. Most everything from camp and OTAs is "No one is open, take off."
Mister perfect has been ridden by the coaches as OTAs and TC began. His brain tells him to push the envelope and they want the slide. Live to play another play isn't PC so now it's play to play another play.
Heimerdinger was a genius OC, the last good OC they had. When Henry was on the radio, he mentioned 'Dinger. When Murray has been on the radio, he's discussed shifting to the TE and slot even. As OC, Dinger used pre-snap movement to set up mismatches and let the QB see who was matched up with whom. Last summer and the first few games, they did this and did it well. (And Mariota did well) If Mariota can see that a team's 3 LBs are matched up with the RB, FB, and TE, he could be off to the races. They DO feel that Delanie and Henry are better athletes than most that would cover them, so it could also be not about Mariota running but simply getting a favorable matchup for a big guy.
This is important. Mariota does have the ability to call his own plays this preseason. If all goes well, he will keep this in the regular season.
They have had arguably the worst two offensive coordinators ever in Loggains and Michael the last four years. Robiskie seems to get hired by every losing team. He's never been the problem but he also doesn't have a great record as an OC. He is respected around the league which is considerable when you think of how bad his Os were at times. Bratkowski, the WR coach, has a nice reputation for play calls himself. Their O was created by those two and Mularkey. Their scripted offense each week will be by those three each week. Jason Michael is still there as the QB coach but Brat was working with Mariota recently, so I'm not even sure that he truly has that role. They wanted Mariota to have a familiar face, but I think as time goes by he's getting silenced. You're basically going to see the first decent offense in 5 years for the Titans.
After some presnap movement to the left, Mariota called a naked bootleg to the right and scored in their scrimmage. Genius! But as someone on the radio pointed out- what if it wasn't there? They had a crowd on the left and he'd never have been able to make a play. TDs as scoring plays do not end in tackles. He knows this and he's working within Mularkey's "don't get tackled" rule.
They're really trying to incorporate the deep ball this year. Mariota's play calling ability was instilled for that maybe most of all. Their smashmouth style should make a safety cheat to help with the run. If he sees it, he's sending is WR deep. What I have never heard of in the last four years is, the line adjusts too. I'm not sure exactly how, but they too are readying to buy MM time to throw deep.
Robinson is a New England boy. Brady throws a ton of snap N throws. Cassel did and he's with the Titans now. Mariota in college threw a ton of snap N throws. (call it whatever ya want) Last year as the season opened, you could see that they had Baylor's coach there incorporating these plays as Mariota did quite a few the first couple games. It's a simple theory of getting the CB to play closer to the WR so the WR can then burn him the next play and also taking the easy 3-4 yards because the CB is well off of a player. The Titans only have Wright that will strike fear in a D where they back off. IF something changes, then sure Hunter and DGB will command this. They're way too tall and fast to let get behind you. Matthews and Sharpe are slower, more calculated possession guys. I don't see this being done much if they're in there.
McBride's sudden resurgence- Have you seen the videos of him at the LOS in drills or plays? He has a wow explosive first step. He could earn that respect where a D backs off.
Mariota needs his guy. It could just be Delanie, but he really needs to fall in love with a WR like Favre to Sharpe/Driver or Kelly to Reed or Montana to Rice or Aikman to Irvin etc The Titans are really best suited (and maybe the first team ever) to NOT have anyone be a star. The best case scenario for them would be to have six WRs and they all play equally. End of the year, they each have 500 yards. They'd be fresh and they all create different matchup issues. This doesn't happen in the NFL world. It should though. Today it looks possible that Hunter is either cut or getting like 100 yards on the season as their 6th WR and barely playing. It looks like DGB will be 5th(hard to tell) and maybe get 150 yards. McBride who is showing up oh so well, will be about shut down as a KR. They almost have more potential sitting than they would playing. I'm almost sad about McBride. He is doing so well and that'll probably translate to a great preseason against third stringers and then what? 16 weeks of "Hey nice kick return." I don't know how Andre impacts DGB just yet, but if he's 4th and called for "big guy" situations and doing well, that totally takes away what DGB does well. We can do this dance with everyone of the WRs. The Titans and Packers this year are the deepest WR corps I have seen in decades. Most teams have 3 WRs contribute significantly, the run N shoot days had four. For each team, that means two or three good looking young talents are doing squat. There is this foolish notion (I've had it too) where we think the fourth WR will sub in and be a key sub contributing a bunch. It is a sound, realistic, logical theory, but find me one at PFR that contributed significantly and had decent stats without an injury to the first three.
Now let me "break your back" with some simple math. 500/16=31. How come at PFR you can't find a slew of 4th and 5th NFL WRs that had 31 stinkin yards per game and got 500 yards. It's just 31 yards! 3 catches? 2?
Titans fans are really choking on the fact that the lower end WRs won't do squat this year. It's gonna be brutal. What they have isn't normal. TZ and Roberts and McBride. That should be the final three spots on a normal-ish WR corps. Theoretically, they should trade a few in a fire sale and try to get some subs elsewhere on the team. It's also not normal to have three RBs with starter experience as their 4th, 5th, and 6th options. They could trade all three RBs and no one would blink. How much are they gonna play with McCluster owning 3rd down? In preseason, each of them should dominate against the opposing 3rd and 4th string Ds. If Cobb runs for 200 yards in the fourth quarter against the Chargers 3rd and 4th string defense, he is still not getting in over any of the top three.
Fluellen- technically 6th and Sankey is 7th. Now that's a typical NFL 4th RB right there. Hustle guy, great effort and mindset, willing to do whatever coach asks, plays special teams and could hop on and off the PS.
I can do the same WR thought with Cobb or Andrews or Sankey. Can't they take a few carries so Murray can get a breather? Cobb and Andrews are hard-nosed guys, why not let them grind out a 3rd and one rather than Murray absorb a huge hit. Andrews is probably a better blocker than Henry, how about he picks up the blitz on 2nd and 14 and Henry rests. For the first time in 100 years, they've finally got a big lead in the fourth Q. How about Sankey closes the game and "we" keep Henry and Murray healthy and don't risk them to injury? You surely can create a scenario where 5 or 6 RBs would be nice on Sunday. It won't happen though. Three, just three.
I absolutely blame Whisenhunt for the lack of development of young players. This is the situation they are in now though. We'll be choking down good talent cut and then good talent on the sideline too
