Titans 2018 (1 Viewer)

Do you think McBride clears waivers for the PS? I don't think he does.

I think since he is now a KR and gunner, he is better than some team's fifth sixth WR that doesn't play ST

Having a nice game this week helps him too
I don't think he does.  Someone will pick him up.

Matias was in for the gigantic hole Fluellen ran through. Two weeks, two wow dominating moments.

He should be starting, not on some roster bubble

Weems made the Titans, oh so likely. On the radio, Mularkey said how it's not necessary for him to play WR. That's how I took that quote at least

Sylvester was horrible. I did take some video screenshots for an article I'm doing. I don't care what they paid him, they will lose games if he is in there. Try him at end and then cut him if that doesn't work out.

There is usually some sort of exchange of scrubs after squads practice against each other. Will the Panthers keep Webb? He looked good and Mularkey likes those guys that can run gimmick plays too.

I thought CMC (did not know that's what he's called) was way high on his ADP. I thought people were ridiculous, as happens with some rookies in FF. Now that I've seen the Panthers use him...wow. I thought he wouldn't look so fast amidst the NFL's fast players, but he does.

Panthers used a FB to deal with Wallace and Brown. Neither did well and both struggled to shake him when it was their turn to do so. Not a good sign that they are ready. Too easy to block

Watch Daren Bates play D. He runs around the ball and does nothing like it's a KR. Stick your nose in there! Lay a hit on someone! I've been unimpressed with him on D two weeks now. I'm not convinced he makes it

Thanks for the recap Bri, nice for us geographically challenged .

Looks like the o got it somewhat together at least with the ones, which is nice to see.

And the D getting stuff done as well, but let's remember Cam is not on the field today

Welcome. Yeah it's preseason. I don't know that I care on team results. Things like "cohesive unit" and like you said "getting it together." Otherwise, I am quite focused on individuals.

I'm not sure that I like this game not ending in cuts but instead everyone stays til the end of preseason. I think it was cuts after week two and after week four.

Anyway, I see a bunch of guys that Mularkey will keep and I will say "are you kidding me?"

Sylvester is just garbage. We don't need a nose that is pushed around as easily as he is. I'm all set to be annoyed when they keep him :-)

Jennings with the catch holy wow, that is unbelievable
Back to this. He played S/CB/RB/ and WR in college, plus return guy and gunner.

He signed tuesday or wednesday and only played S this week. That's it!

He went in after two days of practice and played S, CB, and WR this game even making a nice catch. Fascinating versatility. In three days, I'm already thinking he's on their PS

I think it's a bad idea and maybe even rude that Mularkey hasn't played Ferguson yet.

There is some sort of little league type mentality with preseason where everyone plays. Tolerable last week if he wanted to get a long look at Tanney, but Tanney stunk. No real reason this week to sit him

A buddy is telling me of copyright issues so....about 7:20 left in second Q, look at Sylvester Williams waving at about chest or face level to the OL. Not up high to obstruct the QBs view. Not pushing and trying to get past them. WAVING!

After the game, the Titans coach spoke highly of David Fluellen. “Fluellen is really playing well. We always thought of his special teams play as being his strength, but he can run the football. He has to do better in his protection still. (pause) I trust him.”

Yep, I'd say he wrapped up the third RB spot

Rishard sat for personal reasons, Mularkey sat Murray and Murray wasn't happy about it but understood

Davis out next week already

Nudie had a thigh bruise. Judd hurt his thumb but xrays were negative

Mularkey praised Cassel, so pencil him in if there was any doubt. He also said he never thought it was a competition between he and Tanney

Thoughts on Taywan Taylor now?

He's been my near last pick in drafts, before the K. No thread on boards, like this one, helps.

It seems clear that they have plays for him and really like the guy. I can't see him playing over Decker or Matthews, but ...

Decker barely played last year due to injury and is already out. Isn't it a stretch to expect Davis to be great from day one?

I don't think I'd have him in a 3WR league, but any more than that and I think he's worth a shot. I feel like I can see the upside and the talent is there, just will the opportunity be there

He has been making splash plays since day one and I have been following your comments as well as others that are very positive in regards to Taylor. Funny that you mention the absence of a thread. He maybe is flying under the radar a little bit.

I still have a view that the Titans will run the ball a lot, despite all the upgrades at WR this year, I still see the passing attempts being limited so I would expect Taylors opportunities to be sporadic. Hopefully some big plays and TD at times, but not much consistency in those plays from week to week.

As much as I would like to see Matthews brushed aside for new blood, I am not really seeing that happening, especially early on this season. I expect he will still be their main guy to go to and he has earned Marritoas trust.

As far as Decker goes, you tell me. I am not sure how he fits in here. He was great with Peyton Manning obviously and also did fine with the Jets. For fantasy his viability is tied to scoring a lot of TD, which he has done in the past, but I am not sure about his opportunity for that with the Titans. His catch rate has been solid enough but the yards per reception are somewhat average. He needs enough targets (120) to really be viable and I am not sure he will get that many, I tend to doubt it. So if he is only getting say 80 targets over the course of the season, his performance will be pretty inconsistent. He will struggle to get over 50 receptions, it is below the four reception per game threshold that I think people are looking for from a WR for fantasy, even as a flex.

It certainly is stretch to expect Davis to be great right away. He hasn't practiced enough and I think that will take some time. He should get more opportunities than Decker though I would think (part of the season I'm less optimistic about Decker delivering.

I think Taylor is a fine guy to take at the end of the draft even though I am not expecting a big impact from him this year. He has the upside to possibly fill a flext starting position. it just will be difficult to pick the right weeks to start him. He seems like a guy you might drop at some point for another flyer, then maybe pick him back up later on in the year when he flashes.

I have read some good comments about Jonnu Smith, in particular his blocking. What is your view about him possibly being ready to play now in 2 TE sets? I know your view earlier this year was that rookies take a year to be ready to block in the NFL. A perspective I share with you. Has Jonnu changed your mind about that at all though? Is Supernaw still playing better than Smith?

I don't think I'd take any of the rookies in redraft, but in dynasty I'd be happy with Taylor or Smith, Davis depending on ADP

@BiabreakableRe Supernaw/Smith - don't forget two thinks about Mularkey.

1) He is really into the TEs

2) He is really old school/conservative when it comes to earning playing time

These two things to me spell out not this year for Smith

Supernaw absolutely does appear capable of being Fasano/Stevens. I am thoroughly impressed with his improvement and he really looks solid.

Jonnu gets Mularkey going. He claps, smiles, and really cheers on the rook. They shift him, not every down but often.

If I had to guess, I'd seriously guess that Jonnu is everything Mularkey ever dreamed about. Ya know how he loves the tight ends and all the blocking to almost an obsessive amount. He looks like a dad bragging about his son when he talks of Jonnu in pressers.

Last week, we saw all Jonnu can do. He was h-back, slot, TE, and idk if you call it a FB but something of h-back facing the line, back a step behind.

Supernaw is like a lineman. He goes after defensive ends. Supernaw and Conklin/Lewan will double some end.  Jonnu doesn't do that much. He goes after LBs usually. There is definitely a different scheme between Jonnu and Supernaw.

Another difference between the two is the defense is never pointing out Supernaw. They do Jonnu and follow him when he shifts too. I imagine he earned some respect from the Panthers during their practices, so they made sure to have a man on him. There's gotta be something Mariota or Delanie glean from who moves with Jonnu.

Other than that, like I've said a few times, Jonnu and Fowler leading the way has been gold for them. Last game ya saw Jonnu hit two on one play and three defenders on the other. Fowler dove and took someone out on the first. On the second, he missed a block and caught up to the guy to take him out anyway then got another. Henry is running fast but not full speed, being patient using his blockers. He's showing a nice stiff arm to keep rollling along too. Other than the stiff armed defender, Henry isn't even touched til they're near the goalline. They do it perfectly; thing of beauty. As far as predictability of that play, the Titans can do plenty with Jonnu, Fowler, and Henry on the field. It's not like ya know when it's coming. And I still say good luck to a D trying to stop that. That is one tough mobile trio right there.

That there lends to Mularkey's love for the blocking and the TE too. Every coach would "eat that up." It's not like Stevens and Fasano (or Supernaw) are athletic enough to pull that off. It's definitely new.

I don't know enough about scheming. Some football coach could probably predict which games Jonnu is going to be used more than Supernaw and vice versa. Do you need Supernaw against Watt? Or run away from Watt with Jonnu? Do a snap n throw quick pass to Jonnu so Watt can't do squat? I've heard people bring up Tom Landry's old offense, but I don't know enough to comment on that. He is especially useful, Mularkey loves him, but he's always loved the guys in Supernaw's spot too.

While I can't predict that confidently, I will say this- Dynasty folks are out of their minds picking him in the later rounds. He has made circus catches and done everything you could ask for. Top TEs "do not grown on trees." Whenever Delanie steps down, Jonnu's gonna be one of the best for FF. That one practice highlight where he pushes Byard with his right hand and catches the ball one-handed with his left...stuff like that is just not normal for TEs. There's usually 6-8 TEs that are in the best group in FF and I would definitely pencil him in there when his time comes. Opportunity in that offense, the ability...everything ya want is there. I'd bet $ if I could but...2-3 years from now, everyone in dynasty is asking why they let him fall so far

Mularkey either back-tracked today or Davis didn't look good in some evaluation of his hammy?

Monday

(on if wide receiver Corey Davis will return to practice this week)

No, I'm not sure where the fourth game came in, but we're being smart with him. It's a day-by-day thing. I think he's in a good position right now. I don't know when that day is, I wish I could tell you that, I wish he knew. We'll be overly cautious with him. We want him for the regular season games.

Sunday

(on if he anticipates rookie wide receiver Corey Davis playing in the final preseason game)

On track to do that if he continues to progress like he is. I think he’s ahead of schedule with that.

I think Sylvester is starting to realize he could not make it. This is from PK.com

All of this left me wondering how Williams feels about things, and I caught up to him Monday.

“I think both of them are good players and they deserve all the recognition they get,” Williams said of Woods and Brown. “At the end of the day, it’s a competition, we’re all competing and we’ll see what happens.

“I’m a guy that missed the whole spring coming off of (an ankle) injury. I’ve got to go back out there and prove myself, that’s all it is.”

*********

Proving yourself in week three isn't normal. A player would have already done that by now.

Read into it as you will, that's my guess

Woods pulled a muscle by his hip.

Mularkey mentioned Muhammad negatively again in presser- protection breakdowns and better with assignments. He'll get plenty of work the next two games. (So we're sure about cutting him I bet)

Austin Johnson plays with violence :-) Fun quote. Still think he takes DaQuan Jones' spot. Later said he's athletic and violent...lol. It's so odd to like hearing that about a young DE

Henry and Murray about half the work each with starters.

Davis is running on an ultra G (special treadmil to take some weight off), when he starts running on a regular treadmill, we'll know more. (Geesh that doesn't sound close)

If player doesn't practice tmrw, they won't play sunday

compliments brynden for play in the box but says they have a lot of guys back there

wives? are at fort campbell face timing from inside blackhawks

Sharpe couldn't ask for a better opportunity with Decker and Davis out for now. Now make something of it or skedaddle

Sucks that Woods got injured, now they'll likely have to keep Williams
He is already feeling better. Could play but won't.

:Drum roll noise:

Mularkey has not decided whether DeAngelo Brown or Williams will start.

That right there puts it in perspective nicely.

The $ with Williams is an issue. Mularkey has said they will not keep three NT and each time he said so, he said it quite definitively.

Brown could very well be an up N comer. Do they want to "eat" the contract of Williams or watch another team scoop up a player at a position they are notoriously weak at?

Williams contract isn't that bad. They have guaranteed everything in 2017 (7m) so that's lost (and paid I guess), and a further 2.5m for 2018.

It's not impossible they could cut him. Obviously they'd prefer to trade him, you have to wonder about any off set language in the contract though, if cut.

As I wrote about this week, the Bears built their team in an odd way this offseason. They can go four deep at QB, 3 deep at TE, 4 deep at RB, and 7-8 deep at WR with guys that have started in the NFL. They're not great talents or anything but in a preseason context, this is perfect. The Titans staff gets to evaluate backups playing guys like Wright and Victor Cruz. Zach Miller and that rookie Sheehan are no slouches at backup TE. It's really wonderful for evaluation

Curtis Riley is sitting. Bad move IMO. Not that he won't make the team because of it, but it makes him questionable where he may have had an edge.

Kalan Reed has had an outstanding preseason. Jeremy Boykins has had a very good preseason. Riley looks excellent, but his CB/S value is the same as those two.

Denzel Johnson could start some weeks. Mularkey could cut him in a typical bonehead way he drives me nuts, but he also has been raving about him. He's been the perfect outfielder with wonderful speed. He has been there and pulled up when the ball was intercepted like he would have got it if another player didn't. Opposing offenses are stopping throwing deep when he's in. He was a name UDFA but Mularkey says they didn't realize how fast he was and he might have the fastest closing speed on the team.

Last week, Johnson going in allowed Byard to be the roaming guy- the Polamalu role that he played some of last year. Yes it's supposed to be Searcy or Cyprien, but we all know Lebeau prefers Byard. Byard has been FS because they have no one else and he does have nice range n all. As long as Johnson makes it, I could definitely see a game like the Jags and Browns where he starts. Those teams like to chuck it deep and have nervous QBs that Byard take advantage of.

I think they're really hmmm on Johnson. Because he was a well known UDFA he won't clear waivers. If they keep him, they probably gotta cut a good young DB. I think we should pay attention to who is deep if Byard is by the LOS. That just might be telling.

McCain can't have a bad week. Wright is listed anywhere from 3rd to 5th. Word is McCain was terrible at covering him in practice. There's a good chance those two are matched up. Suppose Wright burns McCain. Putting Adoree in to shut Wright down is obvious, but do you cut Riley or Reed for a guy that's getting burned? McCain is a veteran and considered he slot starter but he's been burned each game. Sims has held Adoree off beautifully as had Ryan. He ain't getting their spots. Also if McCain is a backup, he only plays CB while Reed and Riley play S too. And again, the staff is loving Reed and Riley. It seems odd, but I really could envision McCain going from starter to cut.

Boykins seems perfect for the PS as long as he clears waivers.

Back to the Bears sort of-

Who can cover the TE? They got four and we've got Qs of Dodd, Carraway, and Brown in coverage. Cyprien has had coverage issues that could be exposed and worked on. The young safeties?

That beast of a G at the combine is their C- Cody Whitehair. How do the NTs fare against him? What about the ILBs behind? Langford isn't bad and that speedy guy from the Rams. The Titans have always been weak up the middle, well here's a nice test then.

The Bears Defensive depth is weak so the Titans offensive depth should do real well. I'm quite intrigued by the idea of all these castoffs as depth on their offense. You can't deny that Lebeau or Mularkey know of Cruz and some of these guys. It's not like they had them on their team but they're aware. They actually had tape on these depth guys to show the deep defenders for a change. I really think this game is unique and going to be make or break for some players.

Take a look http://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/depthchart/CHI I bet ya know more Bears depth players than you think

without going into details as to why:  I might need to start Decker the first 2-3 weeks of the season as my WR3 (standard) --- is he the 1, 2, or 3 WR on this team this year? (when healthy)

I've always thought Byard was more of a strong safety than a roamer although he does have enough speed. A guy that can help out with the running game more though if Johnson could take over the back end.

Interesting stuff.

Also agree with you about the Bears having some proven depth at WR and TE. They also signed Sims from the Dolphins who is a good blocker.
