Titans 2018 (1 Viewer)

You make a good point but LeBeau had some pretty good defenses, plenty of opportunities against Brady and never seemed to change his approach.

And as great as Brady is he can be beat, they don't always win
Nope. Only 77.9% of the time over the past two decades.

You really think they might still get rid of Mularkey? I wish.
Only a smidge him, he seemed safe.

It really felt like something was up, still does. Rumor is still that Robiskie is gone.

Some are nitpicking the wording, hasn't talked to Lebeau of the future but expects him to return. Doesn't anticipate changes with Robiskie. Doesn't anticipate changes to staff. Expect versus doesn't anticipate...idk.

The Titans put a huge amount of stock into the wrap up exit meetings each year. (Mularkey and JRob will be on both sides of it, being interviewed and interviewing) It's definitely a Pats thing but the Titans did it before JRob so I'm not sure when it started. Moustache, JRob, and Mularkey are present for every one. Amy shows up in what appears to be random fashion but she probably has some guys she wants to hear. She's too successful and well thought out for it to be random.

People are nitpicking Mularkey's words on the radio but I haven't listened. The gist of it is he has said that anyone (including JRob) could be let go if the meeting doesn't go well.

Wyatt is taking notes this year. JRob asked him to for a few last year and loved it. Now he's doing all of them. He will probably do the draft interviews too. JRob loves having an in-house veteran journalist. Wyatt's seen so much over the years he can smell BS too and JRob gets the notes and...he just likes Wyatt as an observer. JRob called Wyatt better than video taping it...loves him.

Not good.

Cameron Wolfe‏ @CameronWolfe now

Jack Conklin tore his ACL. He will have surgery in next two weeks. PUP candidate next year.
Many NFLers are going to Hawaii for rehab. Marcus started something with the water. I'd bet $ Jack and Jonnu join the crowd

Lemme give you another "doesn't anticipate" for perspective.

That's Mularkey's response to if Murray will be back- doesn't anticipate any change

Sources: The #Titans have offered coach Mike Mularkey an extension in the wake of their playoff run. He’s staying.

Interesting point I read- Munchak was fired (late) for not wanting to make changes management required of him. It does NOT feel like that with Mularkey.

We'll see. They need to change the offense and grow together as a team.

Davis and Taylor grow, Matthews and Walker stay in place, Murray moves on or becomes the 3rd down back as Henry takes over. The potential is there if Conklin gets healthy. But they need to improve the scheme.

Titans and head coach Mike Mularkey mutually agreed to part ways this morning, league source tells @FieldYates .

Kinda surprised by this considering it was reported just yesterday that they offered him an extension. Maybe he didn't want to make the changes they requested?

Yeah "mutually agree" probably means "here's a contract extension if you fire these four guys, if not you can leave.  Your choice.".

Bri - Just a suggestion that we change the title of this thread to Titans 2018 or something because a new coach means a new year. I think someone else started a Titans 2018 thread but there is no reason to lose all this back data by starting a new thread. Keep this one alive. As a Nashvillian, I love the thread.

The belief was that #Patriots OC Josh McDaniels would prefer the #Titans over all coaching jobs. The health of Andrew Luck was an issue, as was the high ceiling with Marcus Mariota.

Of course, Rapoport was also the guy that reported they were extending Mularkey

Can't blame him. Indy only has two real positives: an injured Luck and Ballard at GM whose job will get a lot harder if Luck is never the same.

Titans already a playoff team even with an underwhelming coaching staff handling their franchise QB. A lot more talented on both sides of the ball, too.

Yep. He brings in his own OC, he'll get along well with Robinson. It's rare to get hired into a playoff team with a franchise QB.

He didn't go well in Denver but he's still young (only 4 months older than me) and seems to be the best candidate.

The only candidate I think I'd prefer is Vrabel.

His biggest problems in DEN were:

1. His attitude with players. I'd guess he's learned a lot in that regard and been humbled a bit by his DEN experience, followed by another half decade of coordinating.

2. Being given complete roster control. He wasn't ready for that and most HC's can't handle it. He has one of the best (imo) GM's in the league in place who is hand-picking him, if he's hired.

If he's learned how to delegate and gets a good staff around him, he can focus on Mariota and the offensive scheme and shine imo.

There is no clear line that McDaniels and JRob are close. I've said this before but...JRob was a traveling scout the first time McDaniels was there. As you know, he was in Tampa after getting promoted in NE. They spent about a year together.

Schwartz and JRob are super close. Their families do holidays together and wives are friends and some have even said their houses are near each other. Schwartz not only also worked for New England and grew up under BB, (and the career stuff most know) but he worked for the NFL out of the Titans building before he took the Eagles job. He was JRob's choice and interviewed, but Amy wanted continuity and bought into Mularkey's plan. Amy also heard too many good things of Lebeau and it was widely assumed hiring Schwartz would remove Lebeau, 4-3 3-4 switching.

McDaniels (which I don't agree with....can't give credit for coaching a legend when there's identical success without him) seems to be the top offensive candidate while Schwartz (doing well with limited roster, two years now) is the top defensive candidate. JRob would probably consider either just like any GM. I'm NOT saying he'd never hire McDaniels. There's pedigree and success, just that I've been told over n over that they are not the close NE people others make them out to be.

As I mentioned, Lebeau seemed to let Spanos call the 4th Q and that was hmmm. With the Titans, Lebeau has run a 5-3 more than any other set but no one wants to call it that. 3-5 with two LBs on the line...call it what ya want. His time with the Titans has not at all been all 3-4 as his prior career suggests. He's adapted and it is not at all clear whether Lebeau will stay with the new coach. He's super well respected and highly regarded. It will (almost) be entirely up to him.

Spanos has long been considered the heir. He is a former DC that coached several names at UCLA. What I love about him is that he wants guys to know many positions. Aaron Wallace had such a bad luck injury this year. He got a veteran's day off and worked out on his tweaked back, that wound up being too painful and he surprisingly sat the year. He was expected to be a big contributor in 17. He not only has played all four LB positions in the NFL but he was playing that spy safety near the LOS (polamalu to some degree, against the run)  role in preseason. Jayon Brown played all four LB spots this year. Nate Palmer, a former GB starter and almost exclusively ST in Ten, learned all four spots and played them in preseason. He also believed that depth defensive backs should know both safety and cornerback. During the preseason it was fun to watch the DBs switch between plays. I think it's outstanding for flexibility, communication, and understanding how the defense works. It should but it hasn't shown any gains as far as depth just yet.

Schwartz would likely appreciate both Spanos and Lebeau.

Russ Grimm is a HOFer that is so well known. It's hard to imagine McDaniels having a prob with him staying.

There are pieces that will probably stay whether they go OC or DC as a coaching hire

I don't see how a new coach wouldn't like Murray as a backup. It's not like a new coach is gonna come in and say he doesn't want an excellent receiver and pass blocker as his backup. Yes Mularkey adored him and maybe it drops Murray to some typical appreciation level but he's still appreciated

I have long said I want Mark Helfrich as the OC and Mariota's high school QB coach as the QB coach. (The guy is incredible and now at Alabama) Both worked with mariota during his recovery and both were present twice at Titans offseason activities.

Cowher has visited the Titans facility for like 4-5 years now, every summer. One stray reporter will write a what if article but otherwise it's just been him visiting old friends that coach

I do think Mularkey deserves a lot of credit for changing the mindset and getting this team to .500 ish from being a doormat. I do think he'll get another job and be able to use this as a stepping stone. I was done with him though in a time to move on sort of way

I think that's everything, good luck guessing where this goes.

I concur with this.

I also believe we have not seen anything firm that McDaniels has learned from his Denver mistakes. He is getting the same hype he got back then before he went.

I agree it is assumed that he has learned from his mistakes, but I don't know how one can tell.

Maybe I'm overestimating the value but there is something to be said for spending time in the same organization even if your time didn't overlap much. Nobody is saying they're best friends or Bros or whatever but having that similar background in common, especially in the best franchise in the sport during that time, is a positive.

Maybe it won't help McDaniels get the job and I'm certainly open to him not being the right guy after they analyze everything, but he's definitely in contention.

I really do like Vrabel. I hope he at least gets interviews. Among former players, Frank Reich could be interesting too.

Fascinating stuff from JRob.

Apparently he greatly disapproved of QBs practice time all offseason.Called Ferguson a waste of Strunk's money, plenty of quarterbacks available at the time.

Furious about Antwaun. Had a discussion about him supplanting Sylvester and gave his blessing. (Remember he rode the sled the linemen push?)

Agreed on roster #s and then Mularkey went differently but JRob had already had enough with the nose tackle issue.

Fowler? Shook his head, tried to reacquire him. Says he's not done trying.

Why not replace him sooner? Philosophy is still there, plenty he did right. Couldn't get a replacement on short notice to do those. Too damaging to morale.

So when did you think to replace Mularkey? I stopped attending training camp practices at one point.

So much woah, so much "I knew it," oh so much

Steve Hoffman filed complaints against Mularkey for practice time. Moustache and JRob let it work itself out. ST only got about 10 minutes together before the Pats game. Croom needed time one week, filed form, never got it, in fact he got less. I'm guessing DeMarco's injury week wanting to get Henry and Flu ready.

Mularkey arranged with Fort Campbell for wives to go. No one within the Titans was aware.

Something with anthem stuff not being coaching issue but a prob moustache should have solved

JRob, Amy, and Moustache won't micromanage. New guy will hopefully see they didn't. Hoped Mularkey would come around.

Can't discuss candidates on teams that are playing still
