The Titans GM built a nice deep defense this year. Big Kudos to him on that. They had a lot of injuries and still had the top defense maybe 5 weeks ago. Still the top pass defense and the yards allowed are super impressive. More injuries and more and ....they're beyond a point here.
Last week, once Sweat got hurt- all the journeymen DL that are quite good complimentary players; they were exposed as non-starters and pushed around so so badly. When Sweat came back in, it was somewhat better.
Onto two rookies at ILB and their sixth S, their was outstanding hustle and effort but not one of them is "made" to shed an OL that got into the second level.
Taylor had two long runs and I believe they were when Sweat was out and yeah it's probably the Colts ran for 200 when he was out for like 7 minutes or somesuch, but the rest of the game wasn't good either. Ignore the stats and just say oof the run defense was absolutely awful.
The Colts threw like ten passes. (Colts fans incorrectly saying that's why Titans are top pass D. nope, been there all year. It only helps numbers wise) They only threw so few because, why throw when you can run for twenty yards a carry?
The rookie ILBs had moments and they are athletic. It's been so easy to pass the ball over the middle on them since Jones left. I am not at all thinking Strange has it easy if they're playing a lot. Gifford is slow. I have issues if he's in coverage. Night n day here.
Raekwon McMillan was signed to the PS and now signed to the roster.
Javon Baker- bad trade, sit him down- welp coach said he's back up this week and all hands on deck. No idea who is starting.
I love Thomas but the Titans have the horses to run with him. Their problem for weeks now has been the CB "handing off" the WR to the safety and/or playing shallow expecting the S help. It's maddening to watch. Blanketed blanketed nice job nice job ooooh what's going on? No one is covering him? McLaurin was shut down. Jefferson was shut down. I can go on and on....but then they had a safety prob and what was an exceptional day against a top WR goes from like 3 for 30 4 for 40 to 5 for 100 range. The Titans are so fortunate at CB and absolutely stacked. Amani Hooker is out soooo does the safety problem get worse? or does the replacement "just do his job" and it's better? Of all football tasks "take over covering this guy deep" doesn't seem that difficult but whew do they mess it up.
Callahan and Rudolph seem plenty aware the world thinks Rudolph can't throw deep and he took some good shots last week. He can. This is totally untrue. He played with bad Steelers and bad Titans lines and those OLs wind up dictating that he get rid of the ball quickly. His college highlights and NFL highlights have plenty of deep passes. But....sets up the same. If the Jags are going to think that then... go deep Ridley.
The Titans will start a lot of backups on offense and they weren't good to start the year so there's no sugarcoating that. There's some talent and maybe one of em' can make a case for more playing time next year.
I've been saying it since this summer. Rudolph is fine. He's a backup QB and a veteran and not a problem. They have lots of issues, backup QB is not one. Is he special? Is he great? No he's a longtime NFL backup QB. He is what he is.
I'd watch for Spears to stay healthy and if Chestnut gets any work.
Oliver seems to be likely out due to a knee but if he plays, they've only been lying about getting him more work.
Chig has been awesome! In garbage time against a prevent D that got burned because Rudolph can throw deep. Underneath stuff was wide open when they were down 97-0.
He must must MUST block well inline as the season closes or he's quite replaceable. Whyle is average. Rookie DMR can block and catch. Vannett is a known veteran. A lot of people are saying they'll be in clean house mode and you simply can't have a poor blocking TE next to a questionable tackle. I think there is way more concern than praise for him right now.
NWI is a free agent soon and has 100 TDs and two catches everywhere else. I don't know what that's worth but the Titans will overpay for it.
He has been the focal point of their WR problems thru absolutely no fault of his own. He's a 4th WR in the NFL and when he hustles his way into coaches hearts and starts games, ya realize how shallow the talent is at WR. They need WRs that can force NWI to play in a spot he belongs at. You'll notice this during the game. The Titans do not get separation regularly and the line stinks and...how do you evaluate a QB with that? It's tough n all but we all know there's no alphas around and it's a star's game so they have to add a lot of firepower on offense.
