Titus Young (1 Viewer)

He's certainly well within the range for the onset of schizophrenia and his behavior really seems to be cycling completely out of control. That's an absolutely devastating disease to try to deal with -- really hope his family and friends can get him the help he obviously needs before something truly tragic happens. This is clearly way beyond "he's just a thug" at this point.

Is Titus Young the latest NFL player suffering from hits to the head?

Mike Freeman
National NFL Insider

There are people who have feared Titus Young, and a father who fears for him. He has morphed into many things -- a punchline, a storyline, a timeline of chaos. But before Young engaged in an alleged crime spree that included him running not from defenders on a football field, but police officers on foot, there was a violent hit to the head.

It was 2011 and Young was a rookie with the Detroit Lions. A former teammate of Young's, who asked not to be identified, remembers a game early in the season when Young returned to the bench complaining about some sort of collision he had on the field.

Young was wobbly, the player said, and began saying things that didn't make sense. "He was out of it," the player remembered.

No member of the medical staff, the player recalled, was aware of Young's status. No player alerted the team, either, believing Young would recover quickly. It's believed by the player that other teammates saw Young woozy and incoherent. It's unknown if he returned to the game. The Lions never listed Young as suffering from a concussion.

"Titus was high-strung before that hit but after it his behavior got much worse," the player remembered. "He started fights in practice. He started telling everyone to f--- off."

In fact, there were a handful of players aware that Young was having mental issues, and some tried to reach out to him. One of them was Chicago wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who said in an interview with ESPN that he attempted to get Young into the same treatment program Marshall used. Marshall was diagnosed with a personality disorder.

Young on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to eight criminal counts, ranging from assaulting a police officer to burglary to resisting arrest. He faces almost a decade in prison, representing a dramatic fall for a one-time second-round pick.

The overall picture is potentially a disturbing one. It remains possible a concussion triggered something in an already troubled mind. Young may have been prescribed psychiatric medication that he eventually stopped taking. With no braking mechanisms in place, Young lost control. At least, that's one possibility of several potential explanations for a story that grew so big it spilled outside of the sports world and settled into the national consciousness.

After news of the Young arrests broke, the anonymous teammate thought back to that moment on the sideline, and wondered: Did that alleged concussion irreparably change the brain chemistry of Young, and serve as a sort of spark for what police are calling a crime spree?

It's an extremely difficult question to answer. Indeed, Young had been in trouble off the field before, including when he was suspended most of his sophomore season at Boise State for attacking a teammate.

The difference is that as malicious as Young's previous misdeeds at Boise State and with the Lions were, they were still done in a football context. What Young is accused of now is something entirely different.

Young's father, like Young's former teammate, believes a concussion led to his son's increasingly violent behavior, though there is no proof of a concussion other than the player's and father's testimony. Richard Young told the Detroit News that the frontal portion of Young's skull became compressed due to the concussion. Richard says his son was prescribed Seroquel, an antipsychotic drug used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but Young stopped using it.

One former longtime NFL player explained why, if what Young's father says is accurate, Young may have stopped taking the medication. The former player said it is not uncommon for players to be prescribed antidepressants but the side effects can be so severe, players stop taking them.

"When you use them, one of the things that starts to happen is you're sleepy all the time," the player said, "and you lose your desire to be aggressive on the field. The symptoms can last for weeks."

Players using the drugs may stop taking them during the season or at key points in the offseason, leaving them vulnerable to relapse, the former player explained. A 2011 CBS report on Seroquel said the side effects include dramatic weight gain and diabetes but can also include sleepiness or insomnia, constipation or diarrhea, headache, nausea, and dry mouth, among others.

It's impossible to tell what exactly has happened to Titus Young. No one will until Young speaks, and even then, the entirety of this disturbing and sad case won't be deciphered until a medical expert examines Young.

The only thing that's certain about Young's frightening tale is that it's no longer a joke. There's no humor in Young getting arrested three times in less than a week -- including twice in one day. Not when he broke into the San Clemente home of Bill Palttos, who began loading his weapon and aimed it at Young.

"I feel sorry for him, and I'm sure glad that he left and I didn't have to find out what's going to happen if he came in," Palttos told a California television station, "because I'm afraid I would have shot him."

What exactly happened with Young? Did his brain go haywire or is Young simply a criminal? Did a violent hit, or series of them, start Young's slide, or was he mentally ill before that, and the slide was inevitable, no matter what happened on the field?

Dr. Ben Wedro, a physician who writes frequently about sports medical issues, says Young's apparent mental issues likely begins somewhere in the frontal lobe of his brain. This part of the mind helps decide between right and wrong.

"Is Mr. Young's change in behavior due to a concussion involving the frontal lobes or is he developing a thought disorder?" Wedro said. "Patients with a frontal lobe concussion may become impulsive and become emotionally withdrawn. There can be aggression, outbursts of rage, and violent behavior and the ability to understand the difference between good and bad may be lost.

"Patients with psychosis, like schizophrenia, often present in their late teens and twenties and the symptoms may involve hallucinations, delusions and thought disorganization. Deciding between the diagnoses may be difficult, especially if the history of being hit in the head is not appreciated."

Wedro's main point is key: The brain remains a great mystery. Complicating matters is the violence of football. Its long-term effects on the brain are understood even less. Scientists now just understand the brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. It's caused by repeated blows to the head, and scientists estimate that by the time a typical football player leaves college, he's experienced some 8,000 blows to the head.

They've found the disease in the brains of deceased football players and NFL stars like Junior Seau, Ray Easterling, and Dave Duerson, who all committed suicide after years of emotional distress and rapidly declining cognitive abilities. Bengals receiver Chris Henry was killed accidentally but his career was filled with multiple arrests. Scientists found CTE in his brain, too. Recently, former player Kyle Turley said he has had suicidal thoughts. Last year, Kansas City linebacker Jovan Belcher killed Kasandra Perkins, his 22-year-old girlfriend, before killing himself at the Chiefs' facility.

Young's alleged actions in one respect in particular, when remembering what Belcher did, are especially chilling. It was reported that the former girlfriend of Young, according to court records, was granted a restraining order against him this month. The woman says in the order that Young threatened her, others, and once said to her: "I understand why O.J. killed his wife."

A cacophony of evidence increasingly shows that repeat blows to the head (and not necessarily something as severe as a concussion either) damage the brain's ability to function normally.

Young had a violent past before this alleged crime spree. His fight with a teammate at Boise State led to him dropping into the second round of the draft when he was a low first-round talent.

In Detroit, he punched another teammate, and got into repeated disagreements with players and coaches. The Lions eventually tired of Young and released him.

There are some players who believe one of the things Young needed were conversations with current or former players he trusted who could have yanked Young from the brink. LaVar Arrington, a former NFL player, is a member of the NFL's transition program, which consists of recently retired players who become certified to help in the arenas of mental health.

"The reason why some of these tragedies happen the way they happen is because the walls close in on guys," Arrington said, "and guys feel like they're alone. I'm not saying every guy can be reached but there are resources out there. I'll come get you. I'll drive you to the hospital. There's no need for a player to throw his life away."

It's possible Young was so far gone mentally nothing could have reached him.

The utter confusion about this story, in some ways, can be symbolized by a conversation Young's father told the Detroit News he had with his son, not long before he would be on the run from police. Father and son were talking while Titus lay on the bed, and while crying, made a confession.

"Daddy, I don't know what's going on with me. I don't feel good. I just don't feel good. I'm not myself, I don't feel good, Dad. I don't know what's happening to me."

Stephen Tulloch: Titus Young 'wants to be cured'
By Marc Sessler

Around the League Writer

Before Titus Young was arrested three times in one week, the free-agent receiver told a former teammate about the mental issues plaguing him of late.

Detroit Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch encountered Young on a recent Miami-to-Detroit flight and listened as the wideout explained his disorder, which Tulloch refused to disclose.

"He's aware of the situation that he's dealing with and he showed me a paper and we went over it and I looked over it, and I understand it," Tulloch told the Detroit Free Press. "A lot of people laugh about it and ke-ke-ke about it, but it's real. He has head issues, and the Titus Young when he came in as a rookie and the Titus Young now is two different people.

"It's kind of like when you look at him, he's looking through you. It's different. You can tell there's something going on in his mind, in his head, and I hope that he can get help."

Young was arrested last Saturday after allegedly breaking into a residence and scuffling with deputies in San Clemente, Calif. One week earlier, on May 5, Young was nabbed in Moreno Valley, Calif., on suspicion of DUI, but later released. He was arrested 15 hours later for jumping the fence of an impound lot in an attempt to reclaim his black Mustang.

At his Tuesday arraignment, bail was set at $25,000 -- down from $75,000 -- but the 23-year-old remains in custody at Orange County's Theo Lacy Facility in Santa Ana, Calif. Young's next court date is May 24.

"He has a problem," Tulloch said. "Ain't no question about it. We had some long discussions and he showed me some things and I was like, 'All right.' The fact that before he didn't realize it, now he realizes it.

"He just needs help. Basically he's reaching out for help. He's asking questions and he wants to be cured. And it's tough when people laugh at him and think it's a joke. 'Oh, Titus did this.' "

The Titus Young jokes are over. He obviously needs assistance and he appears to be in the early stages of seeking it. Whatever remains of his football career comes second.

If Young does indeed have the onset of schizophrenia, which seems fairly possible with what we have seen, the onset (for NON drug related cases) is most often in the early 20s, though symptoms can present themselves much earlier on a smaller scale.

If there is ANY family history of Schiz in his family, his odds of getting it go way up. There are also a TON of things that can trigger it's onset (stress, traumatic experiences, drugs.............and many other things).

Basically, blaming hits to the head for this is simply grasping at straws by his family. It's not impossible, but it's also very unlikely. Now, if there is ZERO history of schiz in his family, it would be more plausible, but likely still not the cause.

I know I have been on here speculating that Titus had real mental issues from fairly early on, but I do think speculating on the specific issue is mental masturbation.

Why? The diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder is based on symptoms and behavior. We can't sit here and give some clear cut punpoint diagnosis, but there has been enough behavioral symptoms to at least narrow it down some.

We don't actually have much to work off of. My team at work will interview people, test them, and go through a 2 inch thick folder with 10 years worth of information and making various diagnoses is still difficult The team doesn't always even fully agree.

We have enough to narrow it down pretty far, that's the point.

What you are saying makes it sound like dx'ing your own patients is also mental masturbation, which it is a lot of times. Psychosis and manic behaviors are not that hard to dx, the hard part is specifying it and finding the reason (if there is one to be found, such as brain swelling??? who knows there, but now it will be tested at least).

Young had the same problems in HS and at Boise State before any reported concussion.

Young seems like a person that had star potential, is watching his career (and lifestyle he could live) go down the toilet, so he's grabbing at anything to hold on.

Previous sentence fit for Vince once, fits for Titus now.

Titus need to get away and go to some influence that settles him to get some perspective on life and his situation. Vince returned to his college coach and did seem to get his head on straight and all.

I have no idea who Titus' influence is-some pastor, some former coach...who knows. He's gotta get away and get there though cutting out the outside world.

Any man set to lose 20? million can seem crazy I'm sure.

Does he have a genuine education where he can truly lead a nice life after the NFL? A lot of players were shuffled on through and get terrified at the thought of being "in the real world."

Once settled down, maybe then he can be reevaluated and we'll know what's what.

Titus needs the ability to think clearly before any of that can happen. Get away??? He needs his influence to be a doctor that can actually help him. People "telling him things" is pretty useless when you can't think clearly.

to each his own. I see a figuratively drowning man and we surely agree he can't continue as is. Something has to change, pills or peace n quiet or whatever the guy needs help

Sure, a nice quiet trip out into the wilderness should do the trick. Sounds like an enchanting idea. Can't fail.

Three charges have been added to free agent Titus Young's Orange County Superior Court count, bringing the total to 11.
The new counts were undisclosed, but are related to Young's alleged May 11 burglary of a southern California home. His bail was upped from $25,000 to $50,000, as the judge deemed Young "a danger to the community." Young appeared in court Friday morning behind a protective cage, dressed in inmate orange. The judge asked him three questions and he didn't reply to any of them.

That's encouraging.

The NFL says it "reached out" to free agent Titus Young before his off-the-field meltdown, but that he declined help.
"It was someone very, very close to him who was just concerned — really concerned," said Troy Vincent, the league's director of player engagement. "We went to people very close to his center of influence, to reach out to see how we can support him. The response was of someone who is not open arms to being supported." People close to Young clearly saw his unhinged behavior coming, but it appears he declined any and all offers of help. Now Young is facing up to 10 years of prison on 11 different charges. It's a sad situation.

Not speaking isn't all that bad, his lawyer likely told him to do that....................but a protective cage????? Now THAT is encouraging, yikes.

Any of you guys ever try to talk to someone who is either psychotic or manic??? There are no words or gestures from anyone alive who can do anything to fix that situation. When someone has lost the ability to think clearly and rationally, "words" aren't going to go very far.

Titus Young, ex Detroit Lion, freed after posting bond
By Chris Wesseling

Around the League Writer

Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young was released from Orange County Jail on Thursday night after paying 10 percent of a $50,000 bond.

Young's parents previously had declined to provide the bond because they wanted to get him "anchored" and deal with his personality disorder, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Young spent 27 days in jail after a crime spree that included three arrests in one week, which led to an escalating list of charges now totaling 13.

Those close to Young have been trying to get him to seek professional help for over a year. Young declined the NFL's counseling offer "multiple times." His high school football coach has been pushing for help for months, noting that Young didn't even know he was released by the St. Louis Rams in February.

Young is due in court June 24 after his attorney successfully motioned for a psychiatrist to evaluate his client. A previous court appearance resulted in Young's refusal to address the judge.

We certainly hope he finally accepts the help he so desperately needs.

don't care, don't feel sorry for him; hes wasted his god given abilities. I don't have the physical abilities of Titus Young but does anyone feel bad for me, nope.

Only people I feel for are the family and friends that try to help and get hurt.

Is this specific to Titus Young?? Or pretty much anyone with a bad mental illness??

I worry that he has now bonded out and can do more damage to himself and others. A report saying this man had died or was shot by the police, none of it will surprise me and yet it is all preventable if they can get Young to a doctor and get him some help.

Those who are speaking against him, remember Chris Carter was a complete drunk and Philly shipped him out of town. He ended up getting his life together and making use of the NFL substance abuse program. He kicked alcohol to the curb and went on to a HoF career.

Unfortunately his issues are worse than being a drunk.

Oh I agree but a good doctor could probably at least get him into a clear thinking state.

not buying the mental illness bit, his behavior is that of a street thug / punk

I am not gonna sit here and say he isn't some kind of thug or punk.............................but his behaviors are a pretty crystal clear indication of someone with some legit mental health issue that, as MRS in the post above you stated, a doctor with half a brain would do wonders for the guy and get him back to at least a functional level where he was most of his life.

When you combine the thug/punk type of people with legit mental illness.............this is what you get.

What medical school did you attend and how many hours did you observe Titus Young to come up with this conclusion?

I am not sure whether he is a punk or has a severe mental disorder but I am willing to let the people that are paid and trained professionals look over the evidence and make their judgement before I do.

No matter what the cause is the man needs to step away from football for at least a couple of years and get his life in order, hopefully he can get his life in order because at the rate he is going he will be lucky if he isn't dead or in jail for the rest of his life by time he is 30.

No matter what the cause is the man needs to step away from football for at least a couple of years and get his life in order, hopefully he can get his life in order because at the rate he is going he will be lucky if he isn't dead or in jail for the rest of his life by time he is 30.
I am gonna go out on a limb and say BOTH of these things are true.

It looks like he may have severe bipoliarism. However, without actually studying him in person and just going by the media, it's impossible to diagnose.

Refusing help is never a good thing to see.

Titus Young misses court appearance for 'personal reasons'By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer
June 24, 2013 2:56 pm ET

After former Lions receiver Titus Young was arrested three times in the span of a week, he spent 27 days in jail before bonded out earlier this month.

He had a court date scheduled for Monday, and he didn't make an appearance. That wouldn't be a surprise considering how erratic Young's behavior has been in the past few months -- like, refusing to talk to a judge in a previous court appearance -- but in this case, the judge seemed OK with his absence.

Young missed court because of “personal reasons,” according to SI.com, and after briefly meeting with Young's attorney, judge Andre Manssourian -- who Young had ignored previously -- issued an arrest warrant but held it. That means Young will be fine in the eyes of the court as long as he shows up for his next pre-trial hearing July 2.

"If the court didn't think there was a good reason [for Young's absence], he would have issued the warrant directly," Orange County deputy district attorney Susan Laird told reporters.

Altus Hudson II, Young's attorney, said Young is undergoing psychiatric treatment. Previously, Young's father said his son suffers from a brain disorder and needs professional help.

“When he's around us, his mind comes and goes," Richard Young said. "He can't really defend himself, and I don't want y'all thinking he's a bad person."

For now, Young is facing 11 charges, including attempted burglary.

Free agent Titus Young's lawyer says he's "still suffering from concussions."
Per Young's lawyer, he was excused from his second straight court appearance Tuesday as he continued to undergo "psychiatric evaluation and (treatment related) to concussions he suffered while playing football." It's yet to be determined if Young will be well enough to make his next court appearance. It appears the legal system believes Young was not of a sound mind when he went on his May crime spree.

I speculate he'll start feeling a lot better if he can get his charges dismissed...

If it turns out this dude needs therapy and some antipsychotics to get straight, and he's not actually charged with anything and straightens out, anyone think an NFL team gives him a shot?

Or has his crying about concussions cost him any kind of shot?

I'd give him a %15 shot under those circumstances.

It's not like he killed some guy near his house or was thought to be involved in a double murder

Rotoworld:

An arrest warrant has been issued for ex-Lions WR Titus Young after he missed a court appearance on Tuesday.
Sad. Young has been missing court appearances all summer, but the judge had allowed it because Young was receiving some sort of treatment. However, the judge mandated that Young show up Tuesday, and he didn't. Young is now headed to jail unless the sides can reach some sort of an agreement. Clearly not well, Young could be allowed to report to a medical facility.
