Tom Petty - R.I.P. to one of the greats of Rock Music (1 Viewer)

I made a playlist for when I tailgated a few weeks ago at an NC State game, and today I went back on to spotify to add some more songs to that one, and I noticed that my first song on the original playlist from the tailgate was Louisiana Rain Live. I knew it was on there, but i didn't realize I put if first. Makes me happy that I wanted to kick it off with something I loved, and it happened to be by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.
All of my likes!

Yeah, we're gonna keep this thread near the top for a bit. I've been listening to a ton of Petty since he passed...it was hard at first but now I'm really enjoying his entire catalog.

Here's a surprisingly good tribute by Matchbox 20, and a great crowd.

Matchbox Twenty I Won't Back Down

And I don't know who this is, but he nails a heartfelt version of The Waiting.

Miley Cyrus - Wildflowers (Stern show)
Thank you.  I also found The Killers on there from the last week or so doing "The Waiting."  Also excellent.  My favorite Tom Petty song.

Almost made it through Miley and her dad's cover of "Wildflowers" before starting to cry and then still teared up through Lady Antebellum's version of "Learning to Fly."  Side note, to think I was arguing with some mook on another board the other day claiming Miley "can't sing."  Sure, buddy.  Nice, really nice voices on all these covers.

What an amazing songwriter and musician Tom was.  That catalogue and those influences, as the Lady Antebellum singer pointed out, extending to modern country artists as well.  And did anybody have a bad word to say about the guy?  What a loss.  :(

A Tom Petty song has been my earworm over the last week and it's all I played over the weekend.  Sought a live version of You Wreck Me and am so glad I did.  Sorry if this version was previously posted.  Hadn't seen it before.  What a kickassss version of a kickasssss song.

That's from the Gainesville show that was in the Running Down A Dream documentary. It's a great show.

Learning To Fly form that same 30th anniversary show in Gainesville...I love the stripped down version of this song he always does live, and the crowd really takes it to another level when they sing along. Just fantastic.

Don't know what you got, til its gone

I never considered myself a huge Petty fan but I am realizing that I listen to his music a lot.  Dang.  Wish I would have saw him live.

I just finished my third bourbon and the Tom Petty Documentary on Netflix. It is almost 4 hours long, but I loved every minute. I’m too tired and drunk to see who already mentioned it in this thread, but damn, it’s really good.

Agree.  I had to spread it out over 5 sessions, but it kept my attention all the way through.  Learned a ton of things I didn’t know about the band and have been playing TP’s greatest hits all week...

Cancel shows or sit down and play for the crowd.

you're a 60something year old man. No one’s going to shade you for it. People fawned over Grohl doing the throne thing when he broke his leg.... and if they do, F them, you’re Tom ####### Petty

Based on just info at hand I’m more apt to pin the death on medical mismanagement than saying that Petty is another victim of the opioid crisis.

ok, ok, i'm old, it gets closer every day, my heroes are droppin' like flies, yadayadayada. i can take some old-age stuff robbing us of their genius, but i reeeeally dont wanna be losing rock stars to broken hips.......come on now, it's enough to make an ol fart wanna put a fentanyl patch right on his face....

He already had a known heroin problem in his past. I'll just say that everyone involved should have known better.

Coroner releases cause of Petty’s death.

He played his last tour with a hairline fracture in his hip.
Yeah that info came out when he died...I saw him in May, he wasnt too spry, but I figured it was because he was in his 60s and had gained some weight. Not sure when he fractured his hip, but he was a lot less active than I expected.

He had quite the drug cocktail in his system...a damn shame.
