Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver has been diagnosed with dementia and will retire from public life, according to a statement issued by his family.

That sucks.  I think he's one of the most underrated pitchers of all-time, guy was a beast.

My first memory is him being on the Reds. You add him to the big red machine and can’t win any more series. Still don’t get that.

I'm not sure why you think he was underrated.  He was a first ballot hof'er with a then record of 98.8% of the votes.

I do get what you're saying though, when you ask a lay person to name the top 5 or 10 pitchers of all time, Its doubtful they name Seaver.  And other than the miracle Mets of 69, he was often mired pitching for awful teams - just 3 postseason appearances in 20 years.  

But you don't get a nickname of Terrific for nothing.

There was a great article a few years back about him starting a vineyard - I'll try to link it later.
