Tony Romo: Broadcaster (1 Viewer)

Collinsworth gets a bad rap.  He seems to me to be ultra prepared and offers insights and analysis that are spot on.  He doesn't have the flair that Romo does.  He's not Madden.  Or Gruden for that matter.  Not many great analysts out there.  Maybe he's been around so long that people are just tired of him.  But he's good at what he does.  Put him next to a Jason Witten and you'll see.
He's certainly better than Gruden.

For me it is the bold. Collinsworth gets on my nerves with just how repetitive his takes on certain players/teams can be over the years. It was also a bad taste when the actual Madden games moved from Madden to him that probably has me just a bit more annoyed by his voice.

He's great at analyzing the game in real time and obviously prepared. In the moment when something new/unexpected happens he is great at breaking it down. The whole Raiders-Chargers 4th quarter and ending was masterful with Michels.

One reason RedZone is so great is that you just don't have to listed to a lot of the filler crap these guys have to say. It's a hard job and there are certainly worse out there.

This has always been my criticism of Collinsworth.  The guy obviously has great preparation and work ethic, but in the first five minutes of a game you can tell what the "theme" is going to be, and he pounds it into you the rest of the night.

I was always in the "not special" group, but he's definitely become downright annoying to listen to.

He was especially bad towards the end of this game.

He has been annoying as hell for a couple weeks in a row. Extra gooberish and saying complete nonsense at times.

"Hey Jim!?  Did you hear what I said?!  Jim, I said 'I've seen the ball slip out of guys hands in the playoffs before, JIM!!!'!!!!  Isn't that FUNNY, JIM!?!?!?"

I thought he was annoying with how much he was slobbering over the QB play last week, but it turns out he's much worse when one isn't playing well, like Mahomes in the second half.  It's like he doesn't know what to say, but just keeps talking.

Couldn’t make up his mind how the Chiefs should handle the clock at the end of the 4th. Went back and forth in a 10 second stretch.

I usually like him but I couldn't even understand what point he was trying to make near the end of the regulation.

on the heels of suggesting that the Cowboys would punt after successfully converting a fake punt for a first down.... he comes back and suggests that the Bengals might want to intentionally let the Chiefs take a 4pt lead with a minute to play in the AFC Championship.

one of the local radio guys suggested this morning that the further Romo gets from retirement, the less he knows about the players, coaches and game.  and because he's not preparing or putting in the work to be prepared.. you get #### like this.

he starts with a script and then wings it and just falls apart as the game goes on.

He not only suggested that the Bengals let them score, but also that the Chiefs intentionally go down at the one rather than scoring.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that he didn't know the score and thought it was like the 2nd NYG/NE Super Bowl where the Pats basically decided to let the Giants score once they were inside the 10 with a minute left, and Ahmad Bradshaw tried to stop at the 1 but then fell into the end zone.

But the Giants were down by 2, and could run the clock down and kick a last-second field goal to win the game.  It's a totally different scenario down by 3.

He seems to have gotten worse. Or maybe I was just so happy that the beyond awful Phil Simms no longer had the job, and Romo just seemed like an improvement.
Phil Simms was bad.  He used to agree 100% with whatever the referee would say, even on terrible calls.  He would agree with the ref, agree with them after they huddled and changed the call, then come back after commercial and agree when replay had overturned the change.

All-time worst analyst hands-down was Paul Maguire.  Man, I hated that crew.

He always seemed like he was drunk. And wasn't he the one always shouting "look at his feet!".
Same crew but that was Joe Theismann.  He had a self-proclaimed "foot fetish" and would always go on about the QB's footwork.  That was back when "happy feet" were bad, but then P.Manning came along and suddenly it was a good thing.

That and Phil Simms was what I like to call an After-Genius.

"I knew Brady was going to go to Edelman on that play the way he lined up."

"That play was exactly what I was thinking."

Always said this kind of stuff after it happened.

Even as a halftime guy, he's horrible.  Can't remember which QB it was, but they threw 3 INTs.  2 were blatantly the WRs fault.  And Simms tore him a new one like he threw directly to the defense on every throw.  Dude used to play the position, and not even at a HOF level.  He should know stuff.

Another nice thing about Red Zone is I don’t have to watch the halftime shows, which tend to suck.

Rome started off good, but is just not very good now. I lost track at how many times he called a bad pass a "perfectly thrown ball" in these playoffs. Once, I swear, he said, "a perfectly thrown ball, except a little to the right." He makes no sense far too often now. And his suggestions in the 2-minute offense at the end of halves are atrocious.

I haven't noticed anything different with Romo...I guess I haven't really been listening 🤷‍♂️
I don’t know that it’s been that different, just that the schtick has worn thin. Now that he is more removed from the game, his insight is not nearly as good and he is basically only into it when the qbs nd maybe the overall offense is really rolling. It’s probably not that different than when he started but now the things he doesn’t do are a lot more noticeable

Yeah, it feels like the game has evolved a bit more and because he is more removed from the game now and likely doesn't do his homework, he is lost when it comes to the Xs and Os. Remember his first year when he could seemingly call what a play was going to be right before the snap, because he could read the offense and defense and make a good guess? He almost never does that anymore, and I suspect it's because he has gotten lazy and has no idea now.

Thank you. Weird, how well he was liked early on. The overly excited and exaggerated Nance puppy is finally wearing thin, aside from the grating voice.

Everyone remembered at the same time that they really don't like Tony Romo.

I went as Jessica Simpson for Halloween once, blonde wig, lipstick, and a pink Romo jersey. People came up to me like, hey, great costume, I haaaate you.

I have seen people in the business talk about this and there is speculation that the word "intervention" was used specifically and not lightly. There is a suspicion that he is so poorly prepared due to having some personal issues (drugs/alcohol/etc).
i've been saying the last few years that he looks ****ing rough on air more often than not. like he just came off a hard bender. rough voice. bags under his eyes. kind of has that look of a guy who's sweating hard even though it's 63 and he's not exercising.

reminds me of my friend's older brother when we were kids. guy was an absolutely gutter drunk. he always looked like he just woke up, took a rough shower and was barely hanging on until he could get through a fifth and feel right again.

I thought it was a good story. Much-maligned quarterback finds a new niche that he's really good at for a second act.

Not sure I even notice anymore since they reportedly told him to stop calling out the plays before the snap, which was his strength as an announcer. It's like taking butter off of the bread.

Deadspin and Awful Announcing are two places I personally never go for opinions, but hey, people gonna consume what they consume.

So how's the FFA feeling about Tony after another year? I remembered this discussion last weekend because opinions came in on the far end of both sides of the spectrum - from being the best in the biz to the worst ever. I tend to think @mr. furley got this one right. One thing I noticed recently is that he doesn't seem to be as focused on predicting plays before the snap as he used to be. I think many of his fans saw that as a huge positive but was always annoying to me. I also seem to feel that the public is turning on Romo a fair bit from what I see on social media, but I think that's eventually going to happen to every sports color guy.

guy is a trainwreck, even if he has slowed down on incorrectly guessing play calls.

he tries to overtalk and produce the broadcast now. let Nantz do his job. as milquetoast as Nantz is, he's the air traffic controller. let him do his job. Romo just cannot help but to yammer on and on and on and on, stepping all over Nantz, Steratore, the sideline reporter.. he's trying to tell the production truck when to start/stop highlights. it's awful.

guy could be solo calling the games and would interrupt himself. it's just a miserable 3 hours.

eta: it's especially stark going from listening to Buck/Aikman who are more... classic? and generally understated.. to Romo who is an over-hyper puppy that just got let out. all the "JIM! LAMAR JACKSON SAW THAT DEFENDER AND SAID 'YOU THINK YOU CAN CATCH ME?! NOPE! I'M LAMAR JACKSON, PAL! I'M GONNA, WOOP, RIGHT THERE! I'M GONNA RUN RIGHT BY YOU!".

maybe a handful of times per game he sobers up and analyzes a pin & pull block to explain how a play broke wide open. more often than not he's vocalizing what he feels are the thoughts of a player, in the voice of a 13-year old Madden player.

Ok, who’s using the Furley alias?
