Top 100 Heavy Metal and glam rock acts from the MTV era - it's still real to me (4 Viewers)

What wave are you putting Def Leppard in?
Interesting as they really had two stages - I much prefer the pyromania and before, but the majority will place them in the latter stages of the hair metal scene.  The drummer’s accident did play a big role in the direction of the band also.

Not me, per se, I mentioning how the book grouped them in waves. Not as much Def Leppard in the book, since it was focusing mainly on the club scenes in the US (LA/New York/Jersey). But they were definitely in that 82/83 Quiet Riot time frame.

I saw that yesterday was the 39th (!) anniversary of the release of Pyromania. (And yes- my first copy of that came in my initial 8 cassettes for $.01 from Colombia House 🤣)

I can't remember, did Colombia House actually make us put a penny in an envelope?

Same with me, it was Pyromania and before (I think there was one or two songs from Hysteria). Everything else after was pure dreck.

Didn’t you have to tape it to the card?
Yes...yes you did. Big fan of the Columbia House. I probably had about 7 double sided cassette cases full of Columbia House goodness back in the day.

Speaking of those tapes, So far I only count a handful of groups I had on cassette. Back then it was still a lot of 70s artists mixed in with a few new wave types. Pretty sure the top part of this list will bring more.

I saw them with 8 arms live.
One of the few band I missed altogether, with 7 or 8 arms.  Growing up in LA at the time (I'm closing in on 60) I really have no excuse other than finances I suppose.  I like their early stuff, but I really can't pour sugar on them.  They came out rocking though and I appreciate them for that.

39. Great White

You know I'll keep it kind and gentle.. though truth be told even back in the eighties these LA natives had a reputation as among the most jackholiest in an ocean of jackholes.  One or two super punchable faces here.

But, anyway.. They were good, not great.  Indisputably white.

Earlier stuff.. Streetkiller

Face The Day

Rock Me . . only an all-timer

Save Your Love better ballad than Angel Song

Never loved OBTS but here it is for completists

DEATHS, yes there were deaths  100 dead and 230 injured can still make you shudder..

I don't get the non-like for this band.  they did cover a fair amount of songs, but THEIR songs were really good and in the days of listening to KROQ (I think), KMET, KLOS and the like in So. Cal. I loved when they came on.  To each his own I suppose, but the fire did suck.

I have probably 600-700 cassette tapes stored in my basement. I had a love/hate relationship with Columbia House. I would never send my card in to avoid getting the over-priced selection of the month. I have some pretty interesting titles in my collection not by my choice because of this.

Yeah, few people ever wound up paying full fare. The goal was to sign up with as many names as possible - I used names of my dog, hamster, etc. to load up on material.

At one point they started cracking down on multiple people in the same household... a friend signed up with all his neighbors' addresses, and they'd just move them to his mailbox when they arrived.

I was a younger brother, so I can't really be sure what my first tape was... my brother had a Queen greatest hits, Shout at the Devil, Thriller, and a J Geils Band greatest hits... those were the first tapes we had and wore out.  Pyromania came soon after.

From my perspective, and my friend group at the time, most of whom were also in my Catholic Youth group... Stryper were solid and respectable because the songs were actually pretty good.  But none of our parents gave a crap what we listened to anyway, which was nice.

Lyrical content aside, they're basically Dokken-lite.

We're working our way through the second tier hair dudes

42. Extreme

OK two concerns about Kid Ego
- Word always was this song was about David Lee Roth?  If so, why is this song about David Lee Roth?  Did he snub these guys in some way?  David Lee Roth is a goof, I can think of bigger egos than David Lee Roth, in much smaller bands, without even trying.
- Apparently Gary Cherone hates/disowns this song now?  Did he make up with Dave?  He would later replace Dave's replacement and it would go super well.  Also, does Gary know that, now that all the smoke's cleared, this is still pretty much his best song?

Presented without comment or opinion, Extreme had an anti-abortion ballad on their first record.  Not trying to stir up emotions, I am only here to present interesting information.

On their next album they made a love song that many people seem to think is about a young Mennonite couple who are saying "I love you" to each other but not yet ####ing.

Me, I'm not sure Nuno and Gary are so clever, in any case.

Their first record was mostly a really fun listen if not anything particularly new.  They too were on a thing about teenage lassies but we can assume at the very least they were using a condom.

Their second album was mostly pretty awful, save for the two acoustic numbers

More Than Words
Hole Hearted

On their third album they tried to put up another acoustic hit, Tragic Comic, which is tragically fu-fu-cking sta-stupid

BUT, I have to say, as a whole I LIKED Extreme III, and I still appreciate the three bombastic, introspective, ridiculous tracks that make up Side III

As for Van Halen III, well, I remember checking out the CD from the library and copying it.  I kind of liked this one, bombastic as well. (LIVE!)  Not much else to say, other than I doubt I'll think to touch on this later period again when we get to the VH stuff

Tom Breihan Number Ones on More Than Words
(Full disclosure: More Than Words is my 'Wedding Dance Song' - it was my way of slipping in one of my favorite bands to the playlist). Years later we went to NY State Fair when our son was around 7 and Extreme played outdoors. My son loved it but wife not so much (she hates my music & had no idea how different rest of their music was from 'Words') Saw them after show and they each took pic with my son - very cool dudes.

I loved the funk rock of Pornograffitti & Three Sides probably one of my most played CDs. I just think Nuno is supremely talented. Saw him on last G5 Tour pre-covid. For reference he toured with Rihanna, sang Creep (Radiohead) and led a ton of cool friggin jams in Hollywood

The first two albums are on the fringe of that scene.  They are really more like Van Halen at DL’s early peak though
I guess you could get there but they just never came off to me as ‘heavy’. Their first two albums were as close to heavy as I think they ever got and then it seemed they discovered how to get paid and started churning out bubble gum schlock #### for a lot of the rest of their career.

Kind of the essence of hair metal.  Motley Crue is like this also.

I’d agree to that although I think the Crue kept their edge much longer than Def Leppard. DL got dull quick to me. But that’s the beauty of music, everyone enjoys it their own way.

Their third album with Smoking in the Boys Room was a major disappointment, even though it was a commercial success.

Are we questioning Def Leppard's metal cred?

I give you Joey Tempest

38. Europe

I have to admit, these Swedish sweetboys were a guilty pleasure for me even in their heyday.  I was pleased to find that before the cheesy Countdown days, they were making delightfully cheesy and slightly more metally stuff before.

Seven Doors Hotel, 1983 - we are learning our way around some English here. Use your ears to hear and enjoy.

The Wings of Tomorrow album, 1984, has a handful of sizzlers on it. This is an album I'd say I've gone back to every few years over time.

Stormwind (LIVE)
Scream of Anger
Aphasia - sick little instrumental*

1986, Final Countdown, they blew up and going just by the music it was earned.  A quality rock record.

Rock The Night

Ninja - Ridiculous, outstanding

I heard Carrie in a gas station this past week.. was like, hey, this isn't so bad... kinda bad though

Anyway.. their secret weapon, guitarist John Norum left --

"We became this teeny-bopper, bubblegum band and I hated that whole image, the spandex, poodle-rock type of thing. I was more into the heavier, guitar-oriented stuff and it seemed like the keyboards were taking over more and more, and we were becoming more commercial. So I decided to leave. I just wanted to move on and do something else."

John Norum made a solo album that was a fart in the wind**.  Europe's next album without him was also bad, and that was it for any success over here.  They're still doing something somewhere, John Norum in tow.

* speaking of instrumentals by typically vocal bands.. Y&T I'll Cry For You
** John Norum's least terrible song is a cover of somebody coming tomorrow on the countdown

That trip to Walla Walla was one of the least satisfying work trips I've ever done, considering effectively it was successful, just annoying/demanding/ungrateful people.

In hindsight I had time to watch one basketball game, come up with two halfass posts here and the rest was a blur.

For later, get your felines cranked up and on their marks

I had the cassette in high school but hadn’t listened to it about 30 years. After watching the movie and seeing the part where Vince said T.O.P. was garbage I gave it another listen. I just streamed it w/o looking at any track list. I didn’t remember the first song, and there were only a couple of songs I remembered. That album was worse than garbage.

Theres Smokin, Home Sweet Home which is to be fair a top all time ballad, and then all the rest of the songs sound exactly the same :lmao:   At least that’s how I remember it

My math skills aren't great, but if you're talking about Leppard pretty sure you guys may want a recount on these.
Good catch.  It's been a while since I told that joke.  They were decent before the accident and absolutely horrible after.

No worries, was just being a bit of a wiseass.  Agree for the most part, but I have to hand it to them on Hysteria.  The album and in-the-round tour were a masterpiece of the 80's pop-metal movement.  Sure, it wasn't as hard as their previous albums, but man, they nailed exactly what they were going for, and they did it well.

To me, the band was never the same after the loss of Steve Clark.  The majority of what they have done after his passing has been terrible.

Hold your horses guys. I'm sure these bands will come up later.

I hated Smokin the first time I heard it and will never listen to it.   It’s just awful.   Home Sweet Home is an enjoyable ballad.   There is a couple of songs on TOP that I like but I don’t remember what they are.   They are not great but ok and don’t matter.   We can live without them.

Use It or Lose It is probably my go-to on Theatre

Ok.   I quit being lazy and looked at the album.   Use It is of the three songs that listen to others than Hone Sweet Home.   Louder Than Hell and Save Our Souls are the other two songs.   They are not great pieces of music by any means and sound very similar.  The lyrics to Save Our Souls have always hit home home for me.

37. Faster #####cat

A lot of shtick (see Decline II), but some real fun tunes, too.  Their 1987 self-titled debut was a ripper that can almost hang blow for blow with L.A. Guns'.

Bathroom Wall
Cathouse
No Room For Emotion - I'm surprised Mick and Keith never sued over this one

Wake Me When It's Over, the follow-up, the production is bigger but the songs are generally worse.

Gonna Walk - this one's solid
House of Pain - sad boy kicks rock, not for me, that sad harmonica is a bit too much.. taime it downe taime

[Taime Downe ("Tammy") was born Gustave, named after his father who he hated, born and raised in Seattle]

Arizona Indian Doll - always liked this piano ditty, don't cancel me PC police!

You're So Vain - Top 5 hair metal cover, if not #1

This is the one I alluded to the other day. Was listening to Bathroom Wall.

I am a big fan of Don't Change That Song and Shooting You Down.

"In the midst of consummation she caused me aggravation
When she started messing with that dial"

This is a really good song.

Also like "Where There's a Whip There's a Way" from the same album, great opener.
Big fan of Faster P and still listen to the first two albums frequently.   This is good, sleazy hair metal and Slip of the Tongue is a great example of that LA sleaze.

I second this. There must be about 20 awesome hair metal bands I don't know about for FP to be at the bottom of the top 40.

36. KISS

1980.. Peter Criss is gone, Ace Frehley is leaving.  Anton Fig bangs the skins for a while, but he's just a session guy.  They bring in Eric Carr, and then in Ozzy-like fashion, they find a young virtuoso to play guitar.  Turns out he's insane.. what say let's make today a Vinnie day.

So, no grey area here, their "MTV period" is marked clearly by all these big dumb gobstoppers--

I Love It Loud  Vinnie Vincent wrote and played on Creatures but Ace appears on the cover and in the video

The makeup comes off.  These dudes are ugly.

Lick It Up

Vinnie Vincent is fired because like a feral dog he cannot be told to stop playing solos.  No ####.  This would continue to be a problem for Vin.

Heaven's on Fire
This is KISS's third most popular song on Spotify.  Not sure how that is possible

Mark St. John is their guitarist for an album but he gets arthritis and has to leave.  Which sucks.  Enter Bruce Kulick, who had played with Meat Loaf - his name was Robert Paulson :banned: - and Michael Bolton, not the Office Space guy.

Tears Are Falling  I like this one best I guess.  Finger-cheek move is primo shtick
Crazy Crazy Nights from the short lived US version of Top of the Pops
Let's the X in Sex
Smashes Thrashes and Hits also included a re-recording of their biggest hit ever - their old drummer's love song Beth, sung by their new drummer.  Only KISS would do this.

Forever - big dumb ballad co-written by the Big Bolton himself.
God Gave Rock and Roll to You II - Argent cover.  Around this time Eric Carr gets cancer and passes away :(

Meanwhile, Ace had his own adventures with the bottle but got his act together for a late eighties run with Frehley's Comet .. Anton Fig makes another appearance here.. my Fig boner comes from being a big Letterman dork..
Rock Soldiers

In the aftermath of all this, the original KISS members would reunite.. for a short while, and the saga would carry forward into the new millennium.  Their drummer has been former Badlander Eric Singer, for some time now.
