Top 5 Favorite Hackman Performances (1 Viewer)

TripItUp

Footballguy
List your top 5 favorite Hackman performances.

Here are mine.

1. Hoosiers
2. Superman
3. Unforgiven
4. Crimson Tide
5. The Firm (most underrated imho)

1. Hoosiers
2. Crimson Tide
3. Enemy of the State
4. Superman
5. The Conversation

Those are my favorite movies in which he starred. Not necessarily what I consider his best performances. It's weird, as much as I like him as an actor I didn't really like that much of what he was in.

Don't really get Hoosiers. I mean, it's the best movie with Hackman in it, but it's not his best performance.

Nobody seems to mention Heist often, written and directed by Mamet
Mamet films don't make any money and nobody watches them
Heist was Mamet's biggest domestic box office and it only reached about $25M
Hackman is excellent in the film

He was one of those actors who could read the phone book and make it compelling. The two performances that come to mind for me are Crimson Tide and No Way Out but probably because I've watched both about 800 times. And who can ever forget his final performance?

The French Connection is a better movie but Hackman's performance in French Connection II surpasses the original. In the sequel Popeye Doyle travels to Marseilles in pursuit of the drug kingpin but is captured and injected with heroin for a period of time. His portrayal of addiction and withdrawal is absolutely harrowing.

The French Connection
The Conversation
Unforgiven
Hoosiers
The Poseidon Adventure

There are 6 or 7 others that could replace any of the above and I would have a hard time arguing it. Such a great actor.

My "favorites" are:
Mississippi Burning
The Replacements
Get Shorty
Superman
Hoosiers

Honorable mention to Welcome to Mooseport.

Today my 5 favorite would be:

Unforgiven
The Quick and The Dead
Behind Enemy Lines
Absolute Power
Mississippi Burning

Tomorrow or next week, any one or two of the below could move to the top five.
Maybe there is something to be said for relegation.

Welcome to Mooseport
Full Moon in Blue Water
Crimson Tide
The French Connection
Enemy of the State

Hoosiers…still remember going to the theater that doesn’t exist anymore at tue Fox River Mall in Appleton with my dad and my brother. Then cool a few years ago getting to tour and step on the court at Hinkle Fieldhouse while my niece was at Butler.

The Birdcage…love this movie and such a great cast. Him telling stories about what state had great foilage gets me every time.

The Firm…great character
Crimson Tide…he and Denzel facing off
Superman…loved his Lex Luther….Get Shorty is up there too

In no particular order

Night Moves
Crimson Tide
Unforgiven
Royal Tennenbaums
French Connection

Tough to name a top 5....the dude put in the work.

Uncommon Valor and Scarecrow deserves an honorable mention, in the sense that no one as mentioned yet.

Unforgiven

Little Bill would be my #1. After that no preference. Any of the listed below could probably be replaced by others if I thought more about it.

The Quick and The Dead
Mississippi Burning
The French Connection
Enemy of the State

I've already posted my five but if you're looking for a movie to stream this weekend, The Package is a 1989 Cold War spy thriller with Hackman as an Army sergeant trying to prevent an assassination. Hackman probably took the role just to pick up a check but he's solid as always as is the picture which was directed by Andrew Davis who made The Fugitive.. It's available free w/ ads on PlutoTV.

Hoosiers

But I need to go back and watch some of these others again, especially the older ones...

Looks like Tommy Lee Jones is also in the cast, so (y)
