I think they're way different.

 
Arcade Fire, Bruce Springsteen, and some others are really indeed overrated, IMHO. I can see why they make the lists. I should say I like them both and they wouldn't approach a least favorite list of mine. That would be reserved for something like Daughtry or something like that.  

The Dead being listed is something I don't get at this juncture in my life, but am willing to respect opinions. I just happen to love American Beauty and Workingman's Dead too much to ever write them off.

I actually enjoyed reading this, mang. This is the type of stuff I like on the board.  

 
I like Arcade Fire but it's another one of those bands where I totally understand why people would hate them.

Pink Floyd, on the other hand, you have to be inhuman not to like their music.  

I also want to list Blues Traveler as an honorable mention.  That harmonica #### sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me.

sure, i could've listed Beyonce/Rihanna/Madonna/Katy Perry/Bieber/etc/etc/etc ... bit that's kinda like fish in a barrel for me - i was thinking/listing more along the lines of bands/artists who are more worshipped and Deified in the classic rock sense - the other crap i don't care about enough to laundry list  :shrug:

as far as the Dead - i can say that i strongly dislike them ... perhaps "hate" was too stringent, in retrospect.  i certainly "hate" the #### i sourced above a whole hell of a lot more than those jamming/noodling/nodding hippie mutha trukkas

Oh yeah, I didn't even know you listed them. But you did exactly what I did. I tried to take genres with revered artists and list them as my least favorite (think metal and Maiden and post-rock and Sigur Ros), so I don't think we're too far apart here.  

I was really just saying I love the Dead and agree with shuke on this one. Weird to say, though, because back when I was in college, I absolutely hated their fan base -- and by extension, them.  

 
And like I said, taste is something I can respect because it's so subjective, and so filtered through brain chemistry and experience that of course you're going to see things that surprise you on these lists. 

For instance, if I didn't have a particular roommate who I watched baseball with and smoked pot every night, I might not have a Dead appreciation in the least and could have listed them. But I heard Box Of Rain, and the lyrics and music just got me, hands down, stone cold.

i was a coke/booze/speed freak back in the day ... the music i loved and gravitated to lent itself to that breakneck paced lifestyle ... and i would be at parties with Dead fans, and they'd be all mellow and squishy and gooey, groovin' in the corner - we called them the "nod squad" ... anyways, you'd ask them "yo, whatcha listenin' to?" and they'd answer sumthin' like "ohhh man, a killer live version of "Friend of the Devil" recorded on some dude's portable cassette player back in 1972 at a banana festival in Dubuque - the clarity is stunning!" 

we'd run out to bag more blow, pick up some booze and ladies ... return half hour later, and:  "yo, what are you listening to now?"   "ooooooh, man, it's that same version of "Friends of the Devil - Jerry is trance-like!!!!"

 WHAAAT?

Nod ####### Squad. 

#### that - i wanted to ####, snort, break ####, and ####  - so waiting for a 43 minutes song to end was not up in my wheelhouse.

:lmao:  LOL. I was straight edge (sorta) for the longest time and felt the same way. I think their studio albums are actually wonderfully contained compared to what true fans would call their best output. 

I can't listen to those 43 minute long jams while some hippie regales me about the latest philosophies on life. Can't...can't stand it. Still. But I love those studio albums they were putting out.

Lots of Rush haters, I don't love them but they have some good songs :shrug:  

Ha, I almost put Sublime but didn't think they were popular enough. I actually own one of their CDs, like nails on a chalkboard now though. 

Woah some people had Soundgarden, Rolling Stones, Hendrix  :shock:

also, i always appreciated Apple Jack's spin on music related topics ... didn't always agree, but he always had interesting things to say and recommend ... and he swore by Jerry

LOL. (And I mean that in a good way.)

Box Of Rain on American Beauty, to me, is their high point. It's so wonderfully conceived and wonderfully constructed and delivered with such pathos that it's undeniable. It's about his father's pancreatic cancer, IIRC. It's more verse-chorus-verse than their live recordings.  I love the tautness of their studio recordings, though that puts me in the minority.  But I can't shake the two-minute punk in me, nor the lover of Americana and country and blues and jazz, so we'll just have leave it there. I love the Dead other than their confusion that Hell's Angels might have done something bad at Altamont. That seemed naive. But I loved reading about them and Owsley (?) and The Electric Kool-AId Acid Test via Tom Wolfe.  Different strokes and all...like I said, different experiences bring different things and thoughts.

It was another band member that wrote the song. Funny, I was thinking of Apple Jack the other night. I think people holler for that song (Box of Rain) at shows as his only song. Yeah, I think weed helps, to be honest. I think you can also just drink and appreciate the studio stuff; I think both you and I are more about under four minutes and get in get out or if you're gonna jam, jam with a really loud/quiet or slow/fast dynamic rather than an endless Americana. But I can deal with verse-chorus-verse for four or five minutes. I used to say if you couldn't make a musical statement within three minutes then GTFO, but I've since softened my stance because so much great stuff takes a bit of a build.

Not all of Dead's music is the psychedelic stuff people associate with it. Here's one of my favorites.  Surprise, less than 6 minutes.  This is just good old American music.  I don't even know what category it is.  And while Jerry is the star of the band, many songs really feature the talents of other band members.  Listen to Brent playing keys on this one.

 
Radiohead - Really liked The Bends, can't stand the albums after that

Bon Jovi - Like Sambora's playing, but that's about it.

Steely Dan - Don't know what it is, I can't change the station fast enough when one of their songs comes on

Pet Shop Boys - They were big when I was growing up, seen them listed as a top 40 all-time pop band - hated 'em then, hate 'em now

Drake - He's a proxy for anyone currently on the Billboard top 100, pretty much.   But I hope he rots in Hell for unleashing that horrendous "God's Plan" on humanity.

Good topic.  Interesting to see artists that I thought would have been beyond reproach mentioned multiple times. 

 
The Dead have so much baggage.  There is just so much associated with them.  I think that's what turns people off.  I know it did me back in the day.  If you scrape all that away an truly engage with the music, they're impossible not to like.

such as Lou's "Street Hassle"  or the runup to "Sweet Jane" on 'Rock n' Roll Animal'

on a more personal note, "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus "Warszawa" and "Station to Station" by Bowie are loooooonger songs that i can never get enough of - and, yeah, i don't mind the ostentatious excess on display, either ... it's the milieu they were incubated in that fascinates me, and compels me to listen ... the Dead's milieu still encompasses too much "hippie" aesthetic for my tastes, and was one of the (if not THE) biggest reasons i tuned then out.

Also they are a tough band to get into because all their key work was done live and is mostly available through bootlegs. Their studio albums are pretty non-essential.

Ahh, okay. I guess we weren't communicating well. Those two albums are stone cold classic. American Beauty even wins best cover art in a lot of polls.

I'm in the same boat, but I wouldn't consider them popular today.  I'd imagine Fred Durst today as the fat guy at the gym on roids wearing a hat over his ears.  Wonder what happened to that dude

Right, that is where I wasn't sure what we meant by popular. Are Creed or Nickelback popular today? I actually see HS students wearing Nickelback shirts sometimes.

I disagree.  Ripple, Box of Rain, Attics, and even Operator are better on the albums imo.  American Beauty in particular is perfection imo.

They don't strike me as the kind of cool kids doing something ironically. They seem more like the kids who have parents my age that genuinley liked Creed and Staind and are passing it a long to their kids.

It's not 43 minutes, but the Devil HIMSELF is in Jerry's head for a bit on the 3/21/70 version.  Check it out.  Start at the tuning leading in if possible.
