Pats Place Veteran WR Torry Holt on IR

Posted by Matt Loede on August 15th, 2010 in Injuries, News Patriots wide receiver Torry Holt has been placed on injured reserve with what is being described as a knee injury, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. He had been held out of practice the past few days. An 11-year veteran, it’s possible that his career could be over. A sad turn of events for Holt, who was on the Patriots’ roster bubble. The owner of eight-straight 1,000 yard seasons between 2000 and 2007, he’s got a great case for the Hall of Fame.

Looks like Brandon Tate will be WR3 in NE imo....

Holt has been on the decline for two years, I really do not think he would have been much of a factor this year even if 100%.

Holt had a great run in his heyday.

He was always one of my favorite players to watch when he was in his prime. It'll be interesting to see if he makes the HOF. His career TD total isn't amazing and that could hurt him. He should have a good second career on tv -- I saw him a bit on ESPN News and thought he was well-spoken.

My friend that has Pats season tickets and attends some of their practices sent me the following text last week -- "Bold Prediction - Holt gets cut"Perhaps it was injury related or perhaps this is the end of the road skillwise, but it was a great run for a class act. :pickle:

As a total aside, whenever I look at career stats for WR's, I'm always surprised how impressive Irving Fryar's career numbers are. In my mind, he was sort of a journeyman who had some good flashes and never lived up to his potential coming out of college, but he hung around long enough to be Top 15 in career td's (more than Holt) and yards.

Seems awfully generous of the Pats, seeing how now they have to pay him when he would have gotten nothing if he were cut.

Great player for a number of years but not HOF worthy IMO.

I pulling for it to be Tate - but this article seems to suggest a different look for the Patriots in some 3 WR sets:

Edelman creates a (good) problem

Excerpt:

While Edelman has been called Welker's "mini-me" because of the similarities in their style of play, there are some differences, starting with their physical makeup. Edelman is 5-foot-10, 198 pounds, while Welker is 5-9, 185 pounds.

So Edelman is a bit sturdier, almost running back-like, which makes him more of a Wildcat-type option than Welker. That's another creative way the Patriots' coaching staff could have Moss, Welker and Edelman on the field at the same time, which would give defenses yet another set of headaches to manage.

"When a player is as productive as Edelman was, you start to look for different ways to get him the ball," Bruschi said.

Another aspect to consider is that even though Welker and Edelman are viewed by many as slot receivers -- best utilized in three-receiver sets from an inside position -- they are actually more than that.

Welker was a regular in standard two-receiver sets last season when he lined up opposite Moss, and in Thursday's preseason opener Edelman lined up as an outside receiver on 10 of his 22 snaps on the field. Thus, seeing a Moss/Welker/Edelman trio on the field is not only realistic, but a near-certainty once Welker returns.

He's slated for surgery this week. They can't just cut an injured player.
He could still be released, though that won't happen if it's legitimately season-ending. Injury settlement is an option. I dunno if Holt thinks he can get another contract.
The Pats probably knew their was a concern of Holt's health maybe even as specific as his knees. If I understand IR correctly, then Holt stays around on the sideline and at practice. I would imagine having him around the younger guys is great and even Moss and Welker could benefit from his knowledge and experience. I wouldn't be surprised if this was discussed beforehand as something that might happen.Further, the Pats may spend 2010 trying to teach Holt whatever he doesn't know about how to coach the WR position-what to say, what not to say, ins N outs from coaching side etc.- for future years. My respect for BB often having a well thought out plan is why I went off on this tangent, just guessing.

If they reach an injury settlement, then it's not giving him "nothing" like Yudkin had suggested.

I don't understand how Holt and Antonio Bryant even got signed this year. Didn't team physician' check these guys knees? It's been well documented they both had chronic knee issues.

If he was healthy when he joined the team then got hurt practicing while under contract (and I don't know if that is the case), I don't think that suggestion is an option.
