Lions RB Jahvid Best to be placed on season-ending IR

Posted by ttwentyman on November 25, 2011 – 3:30 pm

The Lions have pulled the plug on the rest of the 2011 season for Jahvid Best, placing their starting running back on season-ending injured reserve.

Best has missed the team’s last five games since suffering a concussion in the second half of a Week 6 loss to the 49ers.

It was Best’s second concussion of the season. He suffered his first in training camp.

Best had a run of concussion-related issues during his junior season at Cal, so the team has been very cautious and patient in his recovery. The team has described Best’s recovery as week-to-week since the 49ers game.

“From the outset, we have been appropriately cautious and have followed all medical protocol with respect to Jahvid’s injury,” Lions coach Jim Schwartzsaid Friday. “We look forward to his continued improvement and eventual return to the field.”

The Lions have certainly missed Best’s big-play capabilities over the last five weeks, especially in the pass game.

At the time of his injury, Best ranked third on the team with 27 catches for 287 yards. He was coming off a 163-yard performance in a Monday Night victory over the Bears, which included a 88-yard touchdown run.

Best played through two separate turf-toe injuries during his rookie season in 2010, which severely limited his effectiveness after a Week 3 victory over the Eagles.

It’s been a tough two seasons for Best.

He was averaging 4.6 yards per carry with 390 yards rushing and two touchdowns before suffering the second concussion Oct. 16.

Because of the holiday weekend, Best’s transition the injured reserve list isn’t expected to become official until next week. The Lions have not announced a subsequent roster move.

The expectation if for Best to be available to speak with the media early next week.

With running back Kevin Smith suffering an ankle injury against the packers, the Lions will start their week of preparations for the Saints next week with just two healthy backs in Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams.

I was hoping he would come back but I am not surprised by this news. Looks like the Maurice Morris show next week in New Orleans.

It's too bad. He's obviously very talented, but you have to wonder at his prospects going forward. The escalatory nature of his injuries has to make you question if we'll ever see him on the field again. Someone in his corner has to be arguing the risk/reward of coming back vs suffering another concussion.

agree, the guy is made of glass

Any one here hold this guy for all of 5 weeks based on the Lions saying he was coming back when he passed tests. *raises hand*

I'm a bit surprised by this only because, despite how injury-prone he is, he adds another dimension entirely to their offense. That's something you keep around for as long as possible when you could be going to the playoffs, no? So it must be pretty obvious he can't come back at all, even after the regular season.

I'm starting to get the feeling they never really had much intention of bringing him back, that they were going to be so extra overly cautious with him that he had little chance of coming back this season.

Best can only be considered a scat back/8-10 touch guy from here on in, the Lions wanted him to be their bell-cow but he is just not built for that role. Hopefully LaShoure will come back healthy, or maybe Kevin Smith and Best can be the third down guy only. This was the knock against Best when the Lions traded up to get him..it came to fruition.

That doesn't have anything to do with my post, if you read it.

LeShoure's injury is no walk in the park either. It may be their next back isnt on the roster right now.

Wow, his season has ended twice with concussion issues. He's lost any hope of a big contract and his next concussion almost surely ends his career.

It's a shame, he's a great weapon in detroits offense when healthy.

As far as I can tell, you explained how you dropped him early in one thread, then in another you said he has concussion problems. Wow. Was there an original thread where you proclaimed these things early enough to be useful? Or is this your one experience being right and you just felt the need to let us all know.

any practice squad guys around the league they can scoop up?
Andre Brown
 With Bradshaw out, I dont understand why they didn't get Brown an opportunity if they didn't feel comfy with Scott. Brown looked good in the preseason and I think might be the 2nd best running back on the giants.

thanks for doing this after the thursday game so that we can't drop him until next week. :wall: bad enough he took up 6 weeks of a roster spot for no reason. argh.
In my yahoo league I was able to drop him for Morris yesterday. Check to see if you can do this on your site. Its a crappy service but I'll take advantage!

I hope he can continue his career. He's just a kid scratching the surface of his ability.
Now I understand all your anti-Kevin Smith posts.
Kevin Smith has nothing to do with Jahvid Best's long term well being. I'm just hoping the kid is ok. As for Kevin Smith, I hope he plays well too. But the hype was just getting out of hand in there and my posts weren't even so much Anti-Smith as to be cautious with expectations for Smith. I still hope he's ok and can resume his career and have a good one.

I just got out my secret decoder ring for your message. Translation: you own Best in a lot of leagues and Kevin Smith in none.

No stock in either.

Anyone here trade him away the week before he got hurt?<-------This Guy
Yes I did. I magically turned him into Demarco Murray. :-)
Wow... makes my own move look rather underwhelming. I was thrilled to deal him for DeSean Jackson two weeks ago, then run to the wire and grab Kevin Smith before anyone else got wise. The Smith signing just seemed like a clear signal that Best was about to hit IR. Certainly not on par with getting Murray, but I'm still pleased.

Michael Turner. I needed someone that was dependable after losing Charles. It worked out good. Turner won't ever put up huge numbers but he's consistent week to week.
