I think the conductor did it to save the kid, I agree it looks like there was a metal rail right by the conductor's boot, and obviously the kid's head was within a foot (heh) of the train.

That impact probably didn't feel good to the conductor, he easily could have broken his leg or ankle with it - it wouldn't be something he would have done just for kicks. (heh)

obviously the conductor saw this idiot from a distance...for all he knew this guy was getting ready to step in front of his train and kill himself...he took measures without a lot of time to assess the situation in its totality

Let's start with a concussion or being kicked hard enough to fall onto the tracks and under the wheels. This wasn't safe and it wasn't for safeties sake. Conductor should be unemployed.
