Trent Green and playing in NFL Q (1 Viewer)

Trent Green has been passing physicals and tests. It's looking likely that he will be cleared to play for the Fins (if both sides want of course)

He's had a high # of concussions. At some point, enough concussions can cause brain damage, he could have nasty headaches every morning in his retirement(like one player I read about) etc.

Should the NFL tell him he can't play? Is it their place to do so? Or should it be up to the player?

Generally, if docs give the OK to a player he can play

Even if he does get clearance to play he's done. He was done last year and is a tackling dummy at this point. He was able to hide his lack of mobility for a few years in KC due to the incredible line but when that went downhill he was on pace to lead the league in sacks.

I remember during Aikman's career their was some magic # of concussions wherein people considerred your career to be over. I think, IIRC, it came up after Steve Young's concussions. I remember interviews with Aikman about it and in hindsight think he made a wise decision to retire. Because of that, I think the NFL should tell Trent if he hits that # he can't play OR if he's at it already then he can't play.

I do think, although some are very smart, a football player can develop a dumb gladiator perseverance mentality and the NFL needs to step-in and tell them "enough's enough"

True, good point about the difference in lines.I'm curious though if you think it would be wrong for the NFL to tell someone they can't play, override the docs in a sense.

No, I think that should be left up to the Dr.'s and then the athletes. It's a doctors job to medically evaluate the players and if the NFL started making decisions overriding the dr.'s they may open themselves up to lawsuits I'd imagine.

The person I hope that would not allow Trent Green to play football anymore would be Mrs. Green.

If the player is medically cleared and given information on the long-term dangers of attempting to retun to play football, the NFL is fullfilled its obligation in my mind. Plenty of individual teams would not take the chance for practical on the field reasons and a handful out of some sense of morality, but it only takes one team willing to ignore those risks.
