True Detective: Tom went in to listen to the Cardinals game...in November. Mmmmmhmmmm... (1 Viewer)

This show is starting to suck.
wife and I made it through halfway of last nights episode and said we're out. Just too slow and not interesting at all.
My wife is completely done. "The only thing I've gotten from this show is that I like Rachel McAdams' highlights...sort of."
IIRC, your wife also gave up on SoA.Her judgement is suspect. exemplary.
Fixed. I wish I'd given up on SoA after Season 2.

Season one was brilliant. One of the best 8 episodes of crime drama I have ever seen. Woody and Matthew were incredible.

Season two is...whatever. I have lost interest after just 3 episodes. I hope season 3 is much better than this. Season two is just a mis-mosh of nothing interesting. At all.
I agree with your thoughts.

There are multiple problems with Season Two.

1. It pales in comparison to Season One. Some here have said that's an unfair comparison. But it's human nature to make the comparison. It is the same creator/writer, after all.

2. The characters are miscreants and I don't care what happens to them. Even characters like these, three of which are cops, need to be humanized to create empathy. Think of The Wire. Bunch of scumbag cops and politicians in that show, too, yet we still cared about them because they were fully developed characters. One on hand, maybe eight episodes is not enough time to develop empathy. On the other hand, it worked in Season One.

3. The writing is clunky. Either that, or these actors are struggling with delivering their lines.

4. Vince Vaughn is horribly miscast here, and I love Vince Vaughn.

I disagree on #2, but I suppose that's a matter of opinion. I think Velcoro's character has sort of made a 180, we see him start to have this revelation in ep 2 where he decides he's going to work the case, be honest with Ani and tell her he's compromised (even though it was a reasonable assumption), he even knows it's probably someone who's related to the cops that blasted him. How that is going to play out is fascinating, imo. I wouldn't say I'm "rooting" for him, but I find his story compelling. Same with Bezzerides (Lambert has a writings on her up today on Grantland that I think is spot-on). Same with Semyon, to maybe a lesser extent.

I think a lot of the criticisms of Vaughn's portrayal of Semyon don't make or break the show, it's not a fatal flaw. How the story itself is playing out is much more interesting to me, and I think the "star" of the show, to some extent, is Vinci. I mean I don't think many people (myself included) knew that such a place existed, and it's fascinating stuff and ripe for drama.

I also don't think the comparisons to the first season really matter that much either. Besides the name, the seasons have the same amount in common as The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire.

Not exactly the star... perhaps more the femme fatale?

What is this crap? You didn't even throw out some wacko theory about who the real killer is.

What's missing more than anything is humor. While I agree comparing S1 and S2 doesn't serve much of a purpose, the biggest difference I can see is that the brooding in the first season was balanced by a few chuckles in each episode. The only attempt I can recall so far this season is calling an ecig a robot ####.

The Woody/MM dynamic brought some humor. It was the same every time where Rust would do his thing and say a bunch of weird #### and Marty would tell him to shut the #### up in a funny way. But it was humorous.

Ani smelling Velcoro's piss-pants and him quickly directing her away, and then calling her Xena? I don't know where you come from buddy, but in my neck of the woods that is a L O L.

There was zero humor in season 1. Maybe you were watching a Cheers episode
WTF? Woody's reactions to Cohle's craziness were friggin' hilarious.

--In philosophical terms I'm what's called a pessimist.

--OK, what's that mean?

--It means I'm not good at parties.

--Well lemme tell ya, Rust. You ain't that great outside of parties either.

May as well explain that to your shoes.

Sandals, even.

Velcoro's incredulous look and saying "### Pen" was hysterical. Feel like you guys don't think anything's funny unless you hear the laugh track.
I laughed when I saw it in the thread title.

Velcoro is the only one with potential. VV, McAdams and Kitsch are black holes.
McAdams has some potential as well. VV can do a certain type of scene well, hopefully they don't have him crying about Daddy anymore. Kitsch is just terrible.

Hated the manipulative fake cliffhanger of having Velcoro get "shot" to end Ep2 as well. Just lame. Admit I've never been shot by a riot gun but would that even knock someone out?

Cohle: What is this, some kind of hillbilly bunny ranch?

Madame: Excuse me? You might want to talk to Sheriff Belson before you start tossing accusations around.

Cohle: Nah, I have nothing against hillbillies.

I like the show. Had expectations as last season was tremendous, but while not as good so far, pretty damn good. Kind of amazed at the insertion of the gay cop with his obvious conflicts over his gay being. Seems like this sort of lifestyle gets shown & somewhat shoved down our throats as mainstream when it's roughly 5% of the population. Just seems a little overreach in this respect as in a lot of movies, sitcoms, & series do the same. Respectfully, IMO.
I can't help but laugh every time someone says that homosexuality is being "shoved down our throats." It sounds exactly like something the closeted gay cop would say.

Just beyond awful. I couldn't wait for it to be over.

I really want to give this a fair shot because of how amazing season 1 was. But this is just brutal. No redeeming qualities at all IMO. Every character is awful and I have no idea where the story is going.

I just want him to say it slower

Any chance season three brings both casts together or whoever is left alive?
No.
The whole sex cult/masks kind of leaves it open to the possibility.
Still saying no.
Definitely no.
It's not a coincidence. They are leaving themselves the option. Not saying they will do it.
MM and WH are executive producers this season. Could totally see it happening
