I agree with your thoughts.

There are multiple problems with Season Two.

1. It pales in comparison to Season One. Some here have said that's an unfair comparison. But it's human nature to make the comparison. It is the same creator/writer, after all.

2. The characters are miscreants and I don't care what happens to them. Even characters like these, three of which are cops, need to be humanized to create empathy. Think of The Wire. Bunch of scumbag cops and politicians in that show, too, yet we still cared about them because they were fully developed characters. One on hand, maybe eight episodes is not enough time to develop empathy. On the other hand, it worked in Season One.

3. The writing is clunky. Either that, or these actors are struggling with delivering their lines.

4. Vince Vaughn is horribly miscast here, and I love Vince Vaughn.

I disagree on #2, but I suppose that's a matter of opinion. I think Velcoro's character has sort of made a 180, we see him start to have this revelation in ep 2 where he decides he's going to work the case, be honest with Ani and tell her he's compromised (even though it was a reasonable assumption), he even knows it's probably someone who's related to the cops that blasted him. How that is going to play out is fascinating, imo. I wouldn't say I'm "rooting" for him, but I find his story compelling. Same with Bezzerides (Lambert has a writings on her up today on Grantland that I think is spot-on). Same with Semyon, to maybe a lesser extent.

I think a lot of the criticisms of Vaughn's portrayal of Semyon don't make or break the show, it's not a fatal flaw. How the story itself is playing out is much more interesting to me, and I think the "star" of the show, to some extent, is Vinci. I mean I don't think many people (myself included) knew that such a place existed, and it's fascinating stuff and ripe for drama.

I also don't think the comparisons to the first season really matter that much either. Besides the name, the seasons have the same amount in common as The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire.

What's missing more than anything is humor. While I agree comparing S1 and S2 doesn't serve much of a purpose, the biggest difference I can see is that the brooding in the first season was balanced by a few chuckles in each episode. The only attempt I can recall so far this season is calling an ecig a robot ####.

 
The Woody/MM dynamic brought some humor. It was the same every time where Rust would do his thing and say a bunch of weird #### and Marty would tell him to shut the #### up in a funny way. But it was humorous.

McAdams has some potential as well. VV can do a certain type of scene well, hopefully they don't have him crying about Daddy anymore. Kitsch is just terrible.

 
Hated the manipulative fake cliffhanger of having Velcoro get "shot" to end Ep2 as well. Just lame. Admit I've never been shot by a riot gun but would that even knock someone out?

I can't help but laugh every time someone says that homosexuality is being "shoved down our throats." It sounds exactly like something the closeted gay cop would say.
