True Detective: Tom went in to listen to the Cardinals game...in November. Mmmmmhmmmm... (2 Viewers)

I am an episode and a half behind but I love this season so hard. Absolutely love everything about it and will probably watch it 50 times like I did with West Wing, house of cards, and mad men.

Got the time is a flat circle clock, here (it is squashed so I can't read it, but that is OK, because time stops when I watch True Detective).

I don't usually get HBO except for free promos, don't watch most of their own series (caught season one of True Detective after the fact on Netflix, but have since dropped DVD plan, and have streaming only), and movies are in such heavy rotation. I still have a bunch of movies taped from the three free months when I rejoined a year ago. I do sometimes add it for a month (have to sign up for three months, $12.95 rate, but can cancel after 30 days) around this time of year for Hard Knocks, which I did today. So between free On Demand, and running previous episodes from now until (mostly) Sunday, I can be caught up by the finale.

*SPOILERS?*

Noted in one of the recaps, there is a crow picture above Pitlor (Rick Springfield, shrink and plastic surgeon) in a shot from his office. Also, the use of acid on the eyes of two of the vics (Caspere and Stan) was characterized as being done with surgical precision, the kind he might have, as the only character with a medical connection.

Also from a Polygon recap, Ray's father (Fred "Remo Williams" Ward) as ex-LE could be significant, as Ray was shot by a riot gun right after discovering Caspere's hard drive - the kind of non-lethal ammo a cop or ex-cop might have. His old police boss would also fit this description, as well as the one from the since murdered Mexican hooker, about a thin, pasty guy. A good point brought up, why wouldn't the murderer of Caspere already have taken the hard drive in the first place? Maybe the murderer/s of Caspere (if they are the child siblings from the blue diamonds heist/caper, possibly Chessani's adopted children?) are different, and have different motives from those looking for the hard drive/orgy blackmail material? Though Chessani's son would seem to overlap and be in the second set of motive as well, if Pitlor is a reliable witness (the blackmail scheme cooked up by Caspere, Pitlor and Chessani's son, at least), so that might not fit as an explanation.

Another theory was that Osip (Russian gangster, betrayed and double crossed his supposed partner VV in the rail land deal) was in a short list of people that checked off both suspect boxes - those that could have known about the blackmail scheme (most of the orgy bait were Russian) AND been able to leverage and benefit from it.

At beach for the week and just realized we don't get HBO. Gonna go do a knife workout like Bizzaredies to take out my aggressions.

I love it. It's over the top, but not in a bad way like sons of anarchy. It's like a comic book. "You aren't a bad man". "Yes, yes I am"

So I saw they are running all the episodes and caught a few minutes of one of the earlier ones where Colin Farrell is at the movie set. He talks to the photographer who tells him about the hooker parties. That is my guess as to killer and brother of the sister who had their family killed during the blue diamond heist.

When keeping it real goes wrong - gangster style.

Santos challenges VV at the club mass meet, and ends up having his #### ### gold teeth pulled out with pliers.

VV does sound like he is reciting hammy bad guy lines. Not sure if the delivery is the issue, or the words put in his mouth are written like hammy bad guy lines? I'm not sure Richard Burton or Sir Lawrence Olivier in thir prime could have done better. Imagine substituting their stage presence and voice, with lines like blue balls in the heart. Still doesn't work.

I'm watching every second of the Hall of Fame game - with 11th-stringers playing in the 4th quarter - before I start watching this crap show tonight.

There is a classic LA noir resonance to the plot.

As noted, there are some Chinatown parallels (shadowy machinations involved in a land grab for property soon to be much more valuable).

Ani has the same last name as I.A. Bezzerides, who did the screenplay for the seminal Kiss Me Deadly (Marcellus's glowing brief case in Pulp Fiction seems to have borrowed from it).

Is Ray going to die? His father had a premonition, and he cut ties with his one connection to the world, renouncing custody to Chad as the price for forgoing the paternity test.

What is the Mexican connection? Caspere had a Santa Muerta statue in his home. The missing girl found at the orgy. Gonzalez, the scary cartel duo trying to muscle in on VVs club action. The gangster pimp who went out in a blaze of gunfire. The hooker who pawned items pointing to the Caspere crime scene, and later had her throat slit?

What was Ray's father's badge number?

That's what he offered. She didn't take him up on it though.

The song talks about hiding in plain sight.

That would be weird if Unicorn Lebowski had plastic surgery from Pitlor to look like somebody completely different, and was one of the principals. That would make his age in the show's timeline approx in his 40s or 50s?

Supposedly Ani talked about the trees similarly to how Ray's father (Fred Ward) did in the bizarre David Lynch-esque dream sequence with the Conway Twitty dude.

I forgot about another noir riff, LA Confidential.

Plastic surgery enhanced prosts, blackmail, crooked cops.

Joker in the deck.

* About the 50 minute mark for me, this finale is already surpassing the first season.

*SPOILER*

I forgot, but the logo of the shady hippy commune cult run by Ani's father was all over the living room of the the dead mayor's place.

"Suicide" seems to be contagious.
