Trying to Quit Soda (1 Viewer)

seltzer water, plain or flavored, is just so awful. Don't understand how anyone likes that crap.

i also use Brylcreem, and i splash on the Old Spice or Brut or Aqua Velva - depending on the occasion (always Brut for the track).

why u hate the the classics?

My absolute go-to drink w/ meals/etc when home. I drink maybe 2-3 actual sodas a year - can do without the overly sweet sugar water.

Despite my long, rambling post in the Obesity (PSF) thread, I still drink Coke on a regular basis.

I've never done well with "never again" for something I've once enjoyed.  I go off for a while from time to time, but always come back in some capacity.  The key for me was avoiding the extreme, 64oz/day habit I once had.

2 things I do now: replace my morning cokes with coffee and buy the mini cans (7.5 oz I believe) instead of the full size or bottles.  Those two things have drastically decreased my consumption, but I still enjoy a nice cold Coca-Cola Classic on a semi-daily basis.

Never got into coffee. Love the smell - hate the flavor kind of guy.

Eliminating caffeine would be good too - my stomach issues are better when I don't consume as much caffeine and alcohol.  Beer is my next victim unfortunately.  Need to get back to more running and healthy overall. Been a rough two years for me.

Why do you hate yourself?

keep a straight comb in your shirt pocket, too, don't you you old fox you.

ooooff, couldn't run a comb thru this with you pulling and Shuke raking ... my 'do is a Ronco, baby: Set it & Forget it.

no contingency for when things go awry ... i just wing it, like Walnuts in the Pine Barrens.

btw, also a big fan of Argyle.

I started with flavored seltzer and now drink mostly plain seltzer or water. I would have a can of soda maybe once or twice a year for a while but now haven't had any in probably 10 years.
Never really been a soda drinker, but the seltzer water has been my go-to for eliminating beer. I would imagine it would be effective with soda since it’s carbonated and cold

switch to Mr Pibb- the scarcity or disgusting flavor will kill sodas once and for all for you.

never heard of this 'til working a chem startup overnights up in Tarrytown - went to a diner on the Saw Mill, and the engineer i was working with ordered a Tuna Melt and a Pibb.

i thought it tasted more like sarsaparilla, or liquid Black Jack gum, than Dr. Pepper.

ill-advised bev choice, but i did find a way to work it into my Crown flask.

:suds:

I quit drinking sugary stuff last November.  I've had two Cokes and one orange juice since then.  (Fruit juice is just sugar water.  Eat actual fruit.)  I used to have two 12 oz. cans a day.  I've never had a caffeine withdrawal headache, thank goodness.  I now drink Coke Zero, which is pretty decent.  I really haven't missed it, even though I thought I would.

Good luck.

When I was working at an office 5x week I would have a giant Cherry Coke or Mtn. Dew with lunch.  Don't buy soda for the house (much to the kids' chagrin), so for me it was a lunch thing.  Then Covid hit and working from home, I'd only run out for fast food lunch once a week.  If we'd go out to dinner I'd drink soda though.

Now I'm 3x week at office.  I really love those days 'cuz it means I get fatty food and a soda.

Honestly, if the worst you're at is ONE can a day, I could think of worse things you could do to yourself.  But I get the sentiment.  Good luck on your quest.

I used to down 6+ a day.  Once I decided to quit, I gave myself a farewell week and then went cold turkey.  I can tell you the exact day I last had one.  After about three weeks, I didn't crave them at all.

Didn't really consciously replace them with anything.  I do drink a lot more water now, and probably more tea, but never went "I'm craving a Coke, I'll drink some tea instead".  Now, the thought of drinking even a sip is kind of nauseating.  The only carbonated drink I consume is Martinelli apple cider.

Good luck.  If you make it past Day 21, you should be golden

My sister's husband swore off all sugar. I made a tri-tip once with a marinade that contained brown sugar and he wouldn't eat it. That's no way to live life. Some years ago, my doctor suggested I stop eating carbs, and I tried cutting out soda. It was horrible. I love Dr. Pepper. I love cookies. I love candy. I love pizza and garlic bread. Food is meant to enjoy. So now I have one Dr. Pepper at lunch, in those little 12-oz bottles, and I'll take little sips throughout the afternoon. After dinner, I'll break off little bites of a cookie, or have a couple pieces of candy for my dessert sugar fix. If I have rice with dinner, I eat less of it. Whatever I enjoyed before, I still enjoy, I just eat less of it.

When Marvel comes and offers me a superhero role, then I will eat roasted chicken every meal and get ripped. They haven't called yet.

P.S. Getting old sucks.

Like I said, it’s an acquired taste. I loved drinking soda, but all that sugar is what made me fat. I cut back on sugar, processed foods, and on excess carbs, and I dropped a lot of weight. Now, I still like sweet stuff, and I can crush a sleeve of Oreos if I’m not careful. However, when I look in the mirror, I like the guy staring back better than when I was carrying all that weight.

One last week where I could drink them.  Scaled back somewhat except for the final day, which was the Friday before Halloween.  On that day, I went to a Halloween party far from my house and I was the driver, so no alcohol.  Drank A LOT of soft drinks, probably around 9, which got me queasy.

I would probably recommend not going that crazy on the final day, though it made me long for them less in the short term, which may have set me up for long-term success, so maybe it was a good thing.

Kroger has a couple of brands... Fizz & Co are carbonated seltzers that are flavored like Coke, Dr Pepper, or Root Beer, but are just normal seltzer water, no sugar no calories.

They also have regular canned carbonated seltzers in fruity flavors like Lemon/Lime, Mandarin Orange, Blackberry Citrus, etc.

They are pretty good replacements for the soda feel. One small quick shot of liquid stevia is usually enough to mask any residual seltzer bitterness.

Not really germane to your quest, CD, but this reminds me of a time when I was in Phoenix with my dad, visiting a relative.  My dad, of course, go lost, so we were stopping at random Circle-K's (because there is one on literally every street corner there) to use the pay phone (yes this was a long time ago) to call said relative to figure out where we were going.  Every time we stopped, my dad bought me another can of Mtn. Dew.  I must have had 4-5 of them in an hour or so.    Sugar rush anyone?  Well, I think that's why Mtn. Dew is my go-to, if not Cherry Coke.  Man those are good.  I actually am quite proud of myself that I don't buy it for home consumption.  I stick to sugar-free lemonade at home.

Again, good luck pal.

I don't put any sweeteners in my seltzer water. I don't think they taste bitter, but we all have different taste buds.

I was a coke freak and stopped cold turkey. I started drinking earl grey because it had a bit of the citrus taste that I got from a coke. Over a year of no pop I tried a coke zero. Loved it. I treat myself to a can every second day.  Diet A&W root beer is heavenly.

When I stopped soda, I did it thru flavored seltzers. Found it really helpful at first because you trick your brain a little with that shot of carbonation. Just depends if you can deal with the flavor. There are a lot of people that aren't into it, but there are so many flavors for the stuff that there might be something out there for you.

I feel like this thread is similar to the I'm an alcoholic thread where there's many that have managed to eliminate all alcohol, some that are able to "just have one" and some that really are addicted to alcohol or sugar.  Over the years I've had much more trouble cutting out sugar than alcohol but I think the "moderation in all things" is truly best if one can manage it.

Definitely agree with those saying that about 3-4 weeks is how long it takes to break the sugar cravings. But that’s if you cut it out completely and don’t replace it with some diet soda. You gotta completely cut out that sweetness.

What worked best for me was water and tea or iced green tea. Just gotta make sure they’re the no sugar kinds. The more water and tea you drink the less you’ll crave other drinks as well.

I randomly got cravings for about 12-18 months, but 2 years later now and I really can say that I don’t anymore. I never in a million years thought I’d be one of those people saying I don’t crave sweet stuff anymore and that thinking about drinking a sickly sweet soda seems revolting, but that’s pretty much where I am.

I discovered something when I cut down to one soda a day. I don't drink coffee or anything else caffeinated. (I also don't drink enough water.) I'm in my late 40s. I'll go to lunch by myself and have a soda, then I'll run errands. Invariably, after about a half hour, my bladder is like, "THIS IS AN EMERGENCY FIND A TOILET NOW!" Then I'll go, and on the drive home it'll fill up again to the point where I'm sprinting into the house to get to the bathroom. I know caffeine is a diuretic, so maybe that's it, but it's been an unfortunate side effect of cutting soda to one a day.

I fought this battle before.  I went from sugary sodas to diet and then to sparkling water (they have nice flavors naturally sweetened).  It's definitely not the same as Coke but you'll start to crave the bubbles as opposed to the sugar.  I'll occasionally sweeten my Topo Chico or La Croixs with flavored water enhancers (https://sturdrinks.com/pages/all-products) although a fresh lime/lemon normally does the trick.

It’s an acquired taste, actually a good mixer instead of the sweet sugary stuff.
I didn't like it either until a friend left some Topo Chico at my house. Now it's the only seltzer water I kinda enjoy.

Growing up, soda was a treat so to this day I drink filtered water 95% of the time. I occasionally have juice, an Arnold Palmer, a beer/cider/soju or soda when I'm dining out. I don't enjoy wine, coffee or hard booze.
