Turning a redraft league into a keeper league (1 Viewer)

I commish a 10 team league that's been in existence for 3 years. This year we're going to try to upgrade to a 16-team, 1 player keeper league. Next year we plan to go to keep 2, then we'll cap it in three years as a 3-player keeper.

I'm looking to substantially improve our league's bylaws -- any recommendations on templates or the best places to find suggestions for this?

Why bother phasing it in over 3 years. Just bite the bullet and cut it over all at once.

You caught me looking over ours. We moved from a redraft to 2x player keeper four years ago. Never going back...

I hope this helps.

Old School Football Club 09-02-05

DRAFT:

A. Every year a week or so before the NFL season, we will hold a

draft online.

B. The draft will be the opposite of the previous

years standings and will be a snake draft.

C. The draft will be 14 rounds consisting of 300 seconds per pick.

ROSTERS:

A, Team rosters will be limited to 16 total/active players, with no more than 6 players per team, per position.

B. Teams may carry 2 players in injured reserve only if injured by designation of CBS Sportsline.

C. Every week coaches may start 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1K, and 1 Defense. Coaches must have their rosters set 5 minutes prior to the player’s kickoff.

D. Players suspended by the NFL, cannot be held on IR.

TRADES:

A. Trades are encouraged, reviewable, and revocable.

B. Collusive coaches will be expelled from the league and their rosters frozen. When the season ends all players on frozen rosters will be returned to free agency.

C. Players are only traded for players, not for money. Multiple player/draft pick trades are allowed. Draft picks may only be traded in the off-season. Trades including draft picks will have to be conducted through the Commish or Co-Commish.

D. The regular season trade deadline is Week 10. No trade may be conducted between week 10 and the culmination of the season.

SCHEDULE & PLAYOFFS:

A. We will play 14 regular season games.

B. Playoff qualification will be based on overall record/ division record/ power ranking/ coin flip.

C. The two qualifying teams from each division will then play for the division championship. The two victors will then play for the Old School Football Club championship.

D. Playoff game tiebreakers will go to the home team / highest seed per power ranking.

STANDINGS:

Final standings will be based on playoff performance/ power ranking/ coin flip.

KEEPERS:

A. Each coach may select 2 players from any position to keep for the following season’s opening roster. Keepers will be declared to the commissioner or co-commish no later than 12:00pm May 31.

B. If a coach retires from the league, all players in the retiring coach’s franchise are returned to the free agent pool at the end of the season. When a new coach enters the league he/she begins with an empty roster.

STATS:

A. We will count statistics according to cbssportsline.com

B. Seasonal statistics and awards will be recorded and won based on the regular season’s results.

OWNER PROBLEMS:

If one coach has a problem with another coach or a problem with the rules, etc. He/she should privately post and/or email the complaint to both the commish and co-commish and NOT post anything publicly on the message board. Be cool.

FRANCHISE FEE/PRIZES.

A. The franchise fee is an annually fee and is due prior to draft day. Owners not submitting this fee prior to the draft will have their team draft automated.

B. The league champion will receive a $250 purse and have their team name with record engraved on the league trophy, MY PRECIOUS. In doing so he/she accepts ownership and full responsibility for the condition and delivery of MY PRECIOUS to a new champion when one is crowned.

Play Nice.

Are the existing teams going to be allowed to keep 1 before the other 6 new teams? Is so, they are screwed.

With 6 new teams I would do a fresh redraft and then next year everyone be allowed to keep 3.

The demand to join this league should be high, and we want to reward returning owners in having the option to keep 1 or enter the drawing for the first round of a serpentine draft. Those keeping players, and everyone else will get to draw for a new serpentine draft order beginning in the second round, which will continue as is through the rest of the rounds of the draft.Any other suggestions out there?

See my league keeper rules below.

5) Draft Value Keeper League:

5a) Each player drafted receives a Draft Value (DV) equal to the round he was selected. (i.e. - a player selected in the first round has a DV of 1, a player selected in the 13 round has DV of 13).

5b) All undrafted free agent pick-ups have a DV of 9.

5c) A free agent pick-up who was selected during the draft and subsequently released/dropped retains his original DV based on his draft round selection. (i.e. - The brownbaggers select Barry Sanders in the 8th round, his DV is 8. Three weeks later, the Liquid Blues pick him up on the free agent wire for $0.50. His DV stays at 8.)

5d) For each player you decide to keep, you lose a selection in the draft equal to the player's DV. (i.e. - The Pleasures select Robert Smith in the 5th round. His DV is 5 and at the end of the season you subtract 3 leaving him a DV of 2. If the Pleasures decide to keep Robert Smith they will relinquish their 2nd round pick in the next draft.)

5e) If you chose to keep multiple players with the same DV (because of trades and free agent acquisitions) you lose consecutive selections in the draft starting from the lowest DV. (i.e. - The Brownbaggers are going to keep two players with a DV of 4 and one with a DV of 5. The Brownbaggers will have to forfeit their 3rd, 4th, and 5th round selections in the next draft.)

5f) You do not have to retain any players. *The maximum number of players you may retain is 8 which must be consistent with a starting lineup (i.e. - 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 PK and 1 D/ST). Of those six only 1 can be a quarterback.

5g) *Keepers are to be submitted at the draft for that year not sooner.

One warning when moving to a keeper league, be sure to have a solid commissioner because you can see some really strange trades if your commissioner is weak.
