Two Hours of Live Audible Tonight 7/23 10 pm Eastern (1 Viewer)

I would like to hear your thoughts on what the best TE strategy would be this year. In your opinion, is it a wiser move to grab one of the top TEs relatively early (round 5 seems to be the target round for guys like Witten or Gates) or is it better to wait for a guy with less name recognition like Zack Miller or Shiancoe who can be had in the last couple rounds of most drafts?

Many thanks for all the time you guys put into this show. It really helps contribute to a shared community feel for us fantasy nerds.

I was looking over the defensive fronts of some NFC teams recently and was surprised to see that the Rams have a pretty solid squad... Chris Long, Adam Carriker & Leonard Little should make for an above-average line. They have problems in the secondary, obviously, but do you guys think Spagnolo can scheme his front seven to stop the run on their way to rushing the QB?

And since the offense affects the defense, do you see any reason to be more optimistic about the Rams offense sustaining drives in 2009? Is their offensive line appreciably better with Jason Smith? The shorter drops for Bulger in the West Coast Offense should make up for some deficiencies and reduce some sacks, right?

Or will they just suck again?

Thanks

Matt, what player rankings from your Rookie Scouting Portfolio are you having some slight doubts about since you now know what teams/situations they landed themselves in?

What outside the norm rankings from the RSP are you still feeling strong about at this time?

What is your opinion on Darren McFadden, a high profile player you had ranked much lower than your peers back in the '08 RSP, these days? Are people asking for trouble spending a 4th-5th round pick on this guy in redraft this year?

How many carries is Mccoy going to take from Westbrook this year? This is assuming that Westbrook is 100% at Week 1, of course.

Thanks and love the Podcasts.

D.

I've read a couple of times in the last month or so, that this year in particular you do not want to come out of the 3rd round of a redraft without 2 good WRs on your roster. In general, do agree with this strategy for 2009?

If Derrick mason follows thru on his retirement, what does that do to the rest of the Ravens offensive numbers?

Whats going on guys, I've got two questions for you tonight.

1.What two Qb's are you guys looking at targeting in later rounds this year. Since the top Qb's seem to be going a little higher than I would like according to the ADP's. In all the Mock drafts I have done targeting one of the top Qb's seems to really put you behind at either RB or WR. Or do you guys feel taking one of the top Qb's is worth it this year?

2.What is your take on Darren Mcfadden this year in PPR leagues,he seems like one of those guys this year that on draft day people will over look. And could really be a steal for a team that goes after WR's or a QB the first 3 rounds of a PPR draft.

Thanks again for taking the time and sharing your thoughts guys.....

Can you weigh the relative merits of Percy Harvin, Chris Henry and Josh Morgan for both redraft and dynasty (non-PPR in both cases) leagues?

Also, is a thinner Lendale White a threat to steal more/less/the same amount of Chris Johnson's TDs?

Thanks.

Love the show. Bloom: congrats on becoming a dad.

Question:

Please name the top three training camp stories you're going to be following this summer and talk about how the outcome of those stories could have a major impact on fantasy football this season.

Cheers,

CA

Thanks for the great work guys. Makes my daily commute much more enjoyable with one of your episodes to listen to.

Could you discuss Kevin Payne and his future with the Bears? Is he on the verge of becoming an elite S? Is he possibly being challenged by Bullocks for playing time?

I can't get a read on where his value lies.

Thanks.

Thanks Bloom for answering my post last week I really liked your thoughts on taking Barber or Portis along with a top WR over taking two top Wr's on the turn if you drafted Adrian Peterson overall, Cecil you stepped out for the night.. Cecil since you missed my question I was curious if a QB like Brady or Manning was there would you take him over a back like Portis or Barber on the turn 6pts per TD 1 pt per 25 yards passing?

So here is my question for you guys tonight, which WR ranked 1-20 do you think is going to be a bust and should be avoided and Which RB ranked 1-20 ranking is going to be a bust and should not be drafted.

Points are 6pts for TD's all positions and starting lineups are 1Qb,2Wr,2RB,1Te,1K,1Dst non ppr 12 team league 14 rounds.

Thanks again the podcasts are great!

Here are a few players I would like to hear some conversation on:

David Garrard

Trent Edwards

Fred Taylor

Leon Washington

Santonio Holmes

Braylon Edwards

Mid 3rd round RBs especially

Pierre Thomas vs Knowshown Moreno

also Reggie Bush, Ryan Grant, Thomas Jones

That may be high for Moreno's current ADP but I think it will rise as we get closer to opening day.

Many of my strategies seem to bump into Thomas/Bush/Moreno right now.

Firstly, my congratulations to Daddy Bloom! I can see him now, debating the upside and downside of fantasy players with his newborn! :moneybag:

Now onto business, and this week my first question concerns players who can be classified as deep sleepers. Who do you guys see as the deepest sleepers in fantasy football for 2009 and beyond? These can include rookies, and that's where I would like to get Matt Waldman involved, as his Rookie Scouting Portfolio gave an excellent rundown of all the rookies.

My second question is about "buy low" players as we approach training camps. We had a 25 round dynasty draft, so the player pool is thin, however there are several interesting players on waivers including Matt Jones and Demetrius Williams, whose value obviously depends on whether Mason retires or not. So who do you guys see as good "buy low" options that I could acquire from other teams for a good price before their value begins to become clearer in training camps?

Any and all advice is appreciated! The Audible is without question the place to be. Keep up the good work.

Auction in my main league is this Saturday! Need some dynasty auction strategy advice:

I really want to come away with one of the best free agent WRs at a good price. Below are the top tier WRs available (bracket is my estimated $ value based on league rules):

Andre Johnson ($21.9)

Steve Smith ($17.5)

Greg Jennings ($17.3)

Colston ($16.7)

Boldin ($14.9)

How do I land one of these guys at 80% or less of my estimated value? Strategies I was considering:

1. Nominate Colston before the rest and hope teams don't bid him because they save money in hopes of landing one of the others that are more highly rated (ADP).

2. Nominate AJ and others to deplete cash reserves and then swoop in for the last of these remaining 5. The hope that cash and need are gone, so I get value.

3. Go hard after AJ in the first round of bidding in hopes that market values aren't set.

4. Not nominate any WRs and hope that one of these guys goes really late, after most teams have used up much of their cash. I would nominate big $ RBs and QBs to deplete cap space of other teams.

Other WRs available include Ochochinco, Avery, Holmes, Ward, Edwards, Holt, Driver, Bryant, Berrian, Hixon.

Double-dipping today with another question!

First question was Rams... next question is Raiders (it's a slow day)

Are you guys impressed by what you've seen from Michael Bush? Assuming McFadden gets hurt, how good do you think this guy can be? Could he be top 10 fantasy material? I know it's the Raiders we're speaking of, but man has he looked awesome in limited duty. Could a combination of Zach Miller catching and Michael Bush running yield exellent fantasy numbers in the instance of a McFadden injury?

Thanks (next question, Lions...)

Question for Matt RE Donald Brown:

According to the staff rankings on FBGs, I see that Matt is higher on Donald Brown than any other staffer. I would like to know how confident he is in ranking Brown ahead of Moreno/Wells.

The ADP of Brown would make him a considerable bargain as he can be had some 30+ picks after Moreno & Wells, but if Matt were drafting tomorrow, would he target Brown ahead of veterans with similar ADPs like Stewart, Rice, Jamal Lewis, & Willie Parker? For that matter does he really expect Brown to produce on par with, or at a higher level than Moreno/Wells? If so Brown could offer the kind of value that Chris Johnson and Steve Slaton offered at this time last year...

Specific draft strategy question for everyone (not just Matt):

I have a "draftmaster" style redraft starting up this weekend that awards RBs a half-point per reception, and I expect Donald Brown to be available at a key point in the draft when I'll have back-to-back picks and will be looking for a RB3 (around the 80th & 81st picks overall). I have the 1st pick overall and my strategy will be to draft MJD, followed by the strongest WRs possible (full pt per reception), and then a top flight TE (1.5 pt per reception), and the best RB available to pair up with MJD.

Having such a strong corps of WRs in PPR to go along with MJD, means I could 'shoot for the moon' and pursue high upside players like Donald Brown or Jonathon Stewart, but I also expect-Ray Rice-Jamal Lewis-Willie Parker to be available here as well (and later I could draft McGahee, James Harrison, or Mendenhall to pair up with Rice, Lewis, or Parker respectively). What direction would you go here? Start locking down the Ravens, Steelers, and/or Browns backfields, or conversely take a risk on the upside of a Donald Brown or Jonathon Stewart without already owning Adai or DWilliams?

What say you?

Serious question this time:

How likely is it that Dixon beats out Batch as the Steelers backup QB if a longer term need arose? Is it one of those "middle of the game is Batch, but week or more to prepare is Dixon" type of situations?

Long time Football Guys subscriber, just started listening to the Audible and I think it's great.

I have a draft strategy question. I'm in a standard 12 team PPR league:

Start: QB, 2RB, 2WR, Flex, TE, K, D

Scoring: 6pts Run/Rec TD, 3 pts Pass TD, 1 pt per 10 yards rush/rec, 1pt per 25 yards passing, 1 point per reception.

In our league each team keeps one player and the amount of points scored by that player last season determines our draft order, so the team keeping the player that scored the fewest points last season picks first and so on. You can only keep a player once, and the next season that player can not be kept. We do it Kentucky Derby style for draft position, so the owner that has the first pick can pick anywhere he wants 1 to 12.

This season it is a good bet that somewhere between 9 to 11 of the players kept will be running backs. The top running backs that can not be kept this season are: Tomlinson, Barber, Portis and Westbroook, so these players will be available in the draft and will all get drafted with the first 4-6 picks.

Here is my question. My keeper this seson will be ADP. Based on his points scored last season I will most likely be drafting in the 8 or 9 slot. Should I stay in that 8-9 position and draft a top tier receiver or Brady if he is available, or should I slide down to the end round and get a lesser #1 receiver and a stronger #2 reciever or running back. Since a TD pass is only worth 3 points I usually wait until the later roungs to draft a QB.

Thanks for the help, keep up the great work.

Kevin in FL

Matt & Sig,

1. What is going on with WR Matt Jones? Where's the love?

2. Can WR Chris Henry take the #2 WR role in Cinci and push Coles into the slot?

3. Is it true that Sig is going on vacation in October and will be unavailable to shine his wisdom on us?

... Panic is setting in. Talk him down, Matt. We've already lost Cecil for a week and a half! He can't vacation until the offseason. Oh wait, there is no off-season, only a non-playing season.

The Audibe is the BEST fantasy football show in the nation and everyone needs to subscribe to footbllguys.com to support the genius of Cecil, Bloom and company. These guys need a nationally syndicated show! See what you can do, Matt Waldman. You got connections, right?

Congrats to Bloom on becoming a DAD!

Question for Matt Waldman: last year before the season began you published a Crank Score article that indicated Addai was more consistent on weekly basis than ADP. So I have a two part question for you: 1.Given Addai's injury history last year do you see him rebounding this year; what impact will the drafting of Brown have on Addai? 2. Is the weekly consistency argument valid and if so which WR and RB would you prefer to have?

thanks

tec

First, congrats to Daddy Bloom! Love the Audible!

Question for you guys - In a couple of my leagues, instead of drawing for draft slots (first name gets slot #1, etc.), we draw for order of PICKING draft slots, so if you're fifth and the first four guys have already taken slots 1-4, you can go with 5 or skip to the end and take the 14th slot or anywhere in between. Obviously it depends on the type of league (# of teams, serpentine vs. 3RR, # of starters at each position, etc.), but I'd like to hear your thoughts what you think are the better/worse draft slots this year for my league in particular, but also any thoughts about draft slots in general this year.

My biggest league is a 14 teamer, 3RR draft, we start 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1 RB/WR/TE flex, 1 K, 1 DEF ... we have 0.5 PPR, but pretty much standard scoring other than that. Also, initial waiver order is reverse of 1st round draft order.

If I get the first choice, my thought is to go with #1 and not look back. But I'm wondering -- if I can't get one of the top draft slots, at what point would it make more sense to just grab slot 14 if it's available, giving me 3 picks in the top 30 (14, 15, 29) plus the first waiver pick which is nice. Where do you see the biggest dropoff, and what do you see as the prime draft slots this season.

Thanks in advance!

Matt...enjoying the Crank series, couple of questions:

1. Can you review the concept of Crank scores? What do you do with that information...ie, do you always go for the 'consistent' guys over the high upside guys? Where do you factor this into your draft/auction planning?

2. Can you go over guys you feel fit your consistent RB status? I was generally going to avoid older, established RBs, but am intrigued now by Gore, Ronnie Brown and Portis after reading your latest article.

Can you talk more about how much you like these guys, relative to your criteria (and which ones you DON'T like...ie, Ry Grant, LT).

Top 12 Crank RBs are predominantly in offenses without a Top 12 Crank QB.
Top 24 Crank RBs are more (75% in three season) often the clear-cut starter and not in a committee.
Less than one third of the backs in three seasons made the top 12 as Crank RBs with a Top 12 Crank QB and they had at least 40 receptions that year.
The vast majority (33 of 36) of Top 12 Crank RBs from 2006-2008 missed no more than two games.
The top six Crank RBs averaged no less than 331 touches for a season; the top 12 no less than 310; and the 13th-24th ranked had no less than 231 opportunities.3. Similar to question #2 above, can you tell us which guys (after Brees, Brady, Peyton, Rogers, Rivers, Warner) that you feel fit your consistent QB status?

I am particularly interested in thoughts on Big Ben, Palmer, Ma Ryan, Trent Edwards, and Cutler.

* Few top 12 Crank QBs have a feature RB with commensurate production. If they do, that RB is a prominent receiver in the passing game.
* The best Crank QBs have a higher ratio of touchdowns per attempts and generally more attempts per game. However, the difference in attempts is small. These QBs are more efficient.
* The best Crank QBs have at least one WR and/or TE with commensurate production.

Love the show but please don't read long what ifs or trade type posts. Can you summarize? Basically they boil down to "What do you think of ________ or "How would you compare ______________ to _______________.

Hearing everyone's scoring rules and long lists of players names on the roster is tedious at times.

You guys have great show but it has been moving a little in the direction of the "other" FF podcasts.

I double up on #1. The mocks have been a killer and our league goes for QBs early anyway.

Bloom, great job getting Waldman to cover for California Dream'in Lammey this week - you guys won't skip a beat

Waldman, Just wanted to say I am a big fan of your on-going Crank Article series.

My question for you is: What players have you totally changed your opinion on since publishing this year's Rookie Scouting Portfolio? These would be players who are generating buzz out of camp that you might not have seen watching the college tape. As they always say, the tape doesn't lie

Thanks!

-Bryan, RookieBlitz

Yeah, for the most part, most questions don't even mention the kicker or D/ST. And mostly you just need to know if it's PPR, TD heavy/yardage heavy, or somewhat balanced. Most questions won't change beyond those details.

People have all Greg Jennings near the end of the 2nd tier WR's (Boldin, SS, etc) but I see him as a top tear guy, how do you guys feel about jennings ending up among the Moss, CJ, Andre Johnson's at the end of the year?

Hello there gents better rookie TE both short & long termJames Casey or Zach Miller?
I own Casey in a Dynasty League and would like your thoughts on the Owen Daniels situation. How bad is he hurting his chance for a long term contract in Houston with his public sqwauking about it? Will Casey get a chance if Daniels stays?

Matt,

What RBs, WRs, QBs do you think are good Taxi Squad targets this year....guys with 0-3 years in NFL who have a chance to do 'something' starting in 2010?

Was thinking about Henne as MIA QB...maybe Forsett at RB in SEA?

Folks, Ill get to the rest of the questions tomorrow. There will be a slight delay in the show going to iTunes because Cecil is still on vacation.

Thanks for listening!!!

I'd like to hear a little more on Brown vs Addai.

I'm not saying I picked Forte, but he had little competition in Chicago, while the Carolina comparison would more likely be Brown = Stewart, rather than Deangelo.

Deangelo was a great first round talent who had to sit behind the veteran incumbent and his opportunity came when that veteran incumbent was removed from the picture, which is why I think he was a good pick last year.

Are either of these situations similar to Brown's in Indy?

It wasn't so long ago that Addai was the hot first round property, and now HE is the veteran incumbent, albeit for a different coach.

Addai might've disappointed last year, but lots of players disappoint when they're injured --- is Brown really good enough to leapfrog the first round vet?

I wanted to get this in before the show, but I was too busy at work. I've dropped it in the Assistant Coach forum, but I would like your thoughts as well! Thanks for the assist, and I love the show, listen to them as soon as they hit iTunes!

OK gentlemen, here's the situation: 12 team dynasty, IDP, non-PPR. I have the option to dissolve my team and add my players to a pool comprised of another team, and then just the two of us draft new rosters from that pool (with the rookie draft picks thrown in as well). I went 2-11 last year, and have the 4th overall pick in the rookie draft.

My team:

QB - Big Ben; Jason Campbell

RB - Pierre Thomas; Willis McGahee; Ray Rice; Darren Sproles; Leon Washington; Jerome Harrison

WR - Randy Moss; TJ; Lance Moore; Domenik Hixon; Mark Bradley; Josh Morgan; Sidney Rice

TE - Marcedes Lewis

IDP - D'Qwell Jackson; Stephen Cooper; Rocky McIntosh; Justin Durant; Akeem Jordan

Other team:

QB - Drew Brees; Carson Palmer; Kerry Collins;

RB - Steve Slaton; DeAngelo Williams; Derrick Ward; Fred Jackson; Ryan Moats;

WR - Calvin Johnson; Kevin Walter; Dwayne Bowe; Jordy Nelson; Davone Bess; Justin Gage

TE - Owen Daniels; Jason Witten

IDP - Barrett Rudd; Jerod Mayo; Jamie Winborn; Thomas Howard

I am leaning one way, but I'm eager to hear everyone else's thoughts...

Thanks!

100% concur. Complete wast of valuable analysis time on league specific questions. Very tedious to listen to.Most can extrapolate the value in the player specific discussion you provide into their own league context.Awesome helpful production in every other facet.

Hey folks if you check out the NFL Draft Live feed, you can listen to last nights show in iTunes, search for footballguys in the store and it should come up.
