Ty Law won't be returning to Jets next season? (1 Viewer)

I just saw on the ESPN News bottom news feeder that Ty's agent informed the team that he would not be returning next season. Was there some kind of acrimony this year? Has anyone seen any other news to explain this, because I was kind of surprised by it.

Law just had a Pro Bowl season and will get a big, multi-year contract from some team. The Jets are rebuilding and $26 million over the cap. It simply wasn't going to work out beyond last year.

Makes sense, thanks for the info. Was his contract a one year deal? If not, do you think there will be issues arising here?
It was a one year contract disguised as a multi-year deal. Hes owed an $11million roster bonus this offseason.

We're gonna be watching the Jets purge alot of players in the upcoming months. Those guys are in bad shape. Restructurring Pennington's deal, releasing Law, more than likely releasing Abraham, I believe C-Mart is due over a million dollars and may be released or restructured. One big ugly mess. Oh and I forgot, Pennington is my franchise QB. :X :bag:

Thx! I tuned into ESPN radio to hear ".....will not return to the Jets for the 2006 season." I figured I could fill in the blank if I checked into the forum.

And I agree, this is not the year it pays for the Jets to be paying big contracts.

Not that his opinion means any more than any of ours at this early stage, but John "Professor" Clayton picked the Jets as the worst team in football in 2006 in Mike & Mike yesterday [much to Greeny's chagrin.]

His points were: young coaching staff [talented or not, they're green], aging stars, significant needs at premium positions, cap issues.

*Law's current deal called for a huge amount of money if the Jets were to retain him. This move is no surprise.

*Law was not the player he was pre-injury but he was still good. The question is will he get totally back to form now that he doesn't have to deal with rehabbing or is this the player he will be next year.

*I'd love to see Law back with the Pats. He'd be a perfect fit. The Pats have good young CBs in Hobbs, Samuel and Gay but could really use a quality veteran to be their #1. If the Pats add Law they'd get a guy who already knows their system. It would also make the youngsters that much more effective. Hobbs or Samuel as a #3 and Gay as a #4 (if he doesn't move to safety) is a real high quality unit.

*Law's decision will probably come down to money. That's what is important to him. Since he makes no bones about it I really don't see where it's a problem either.

*Careerwise (i.e. legacy) Law's best move would be to play for the Pats. If he comes back, continues to play well and is fortunate enough to be on a another championship or two his legacy will be that much more enhanced. It has been debated before but I do believe if he strings together some more big time years, gets into the top 10 in career ints (he's close now) than his chances to make the H-O-F is that much greater. Add in some more team hardware and it's furthered even more.

Law's not coming back to the Pats, guys. He's looking for a guaranteed $10 million as part of his new deal. I don't see the Patriots giving a 32 year old cornerback that kind of money.

Agreed. If he's looking for the big deal (if history is any indicator than he will) than it won't be with the Pats.I wouldn't mind a two year deal for 10 million. I think he's worth that as a #1 CB and if it's only two years there's not a lot of exposure. Yet, between the bonus and actual contract he will be looking for more than that.
