UFC wagering: no longer stuck with the old thread title. The window to change it is here! (5 Viewers)

They really can't promote that way unless McGregor is actually going to fight the winner next. He might fight Ferguson, but I really doubt that he wants anything to do with the nightmarish stylistic matchup against Khabib.

I agree that another Diaz fight is probably the most likely next fight for McGregor.

They can promote however they want to promote. The promotion doesn't actually have to happen.

Of course they can. But they'd look pretty silly if the fight didn't happen after selling it hard that way. Of course, they obviously don't care too much about looking silly given what's gone on recently, so yeah, it's kind of surprising.

Promoting the "winner fights McGregor" would be a good way for the UFC to get ahead of CM avoiding the fight.  Not to mention, anything CM makes the news.  Even if it is months of him talking about Mayweather.

The UFC will be just fine with McGregor fighting Diaz instead of getting wrestle-####ed by Khabib.

maybe, and to be honest it will make for a great story. GSP has said many times how the last year or 2 of his run he just wasn't into it. It became more of a job. The one thing about GSP that is different then a lot of fighters is that GSP doesn't need to come back to make money, which is very good for everyone.

i think what GSP needed was some time away, and i think before when he was the top PPV draw he had a ton of additional pressure on him. Now he can share that with McGreggor and some other guys, and i think he really wants to come back and test himself. It is funny thinking how it is 3.5 years cause that it is a long time. But if anybody can overcome that rust i would think GSP can (Dom too). So i don't think his only reason for MW is to avoid a rough cut, though he did talk about how he cut from 200. I think it is much more about wanting to come back and fight new guys in a new division. His body did always seem to be able to be able to do 185, and from all i have heard the real difference in weight classes is the reach. Like how Big Rigg will by far have the smallest reach in the MW division, GSP i think won't be as hampered.

i would have rather seen George come back in a "warm-up" fight before his first fight back being for a title, but i think he will be able to hang just fine. Won't be as much of an advantage as he had at 170, but i really am intrigued to see how his takedowns look against the bigger 185'ers.
Can't be much rust to knock off when you only lay on top of someone for 5 rounds.

I'll be impressed if 36 year old GSP, having not fought in almost 4 years and never at middleweight, is capable of taking down Bisping over and over again.

He has likely been packing himself full of some of the best PEDs available on the planet.  Now he goes back to natural for the usada testing.

It's crazy to think of just how few fighters the UFC has left who can give us that big fight feel, other than McGregor. I realize that part of it has to do with how diluted the product has become, with less time to actually hype up the fights, but they're really struggling in that regard, particularly with Ronda seemingly all but retired. GSP's return definitely feels like an event, though, and would qualify as a big fight even if there weren't a title on the line.

Anytime Rumble fights, there's a good chance someone will be decapitated.  That's a good reason to tune in.

Jacare's best win is over a roidless-Belfort.
C'mon dude.

Jacare's run in UFC and Strikeforce before that is is 14 wins and 2 losses with 11 of those wins being finishes and only 3 decisions.    In that stretch he has wins over Tim Kennedy, Robbie Lawler, Mousassi, Boetch, and Belfort.    his one loss in the past 5 years was a split decision loss to Yoel Romero.     Romero is the only guy who has an argument to be a more legit contender to the 185 belt and he's juicer, a cheater and a ####in weirdo and still with any justice in the world he should have lost that Tim Kennedy fight.

Romero, Jacare, Rockhold, Mousassi, and (Yes, still...) Weidman are all legitimate contenders who should make anyone at 185 nervous.      I can't remember the last time there were 5 non-champions at 185 who I viewed as championship material.   Then you have a whole slew of "probably not champions, but you never know" guys -- Uriah Hall, Boetch, Robert Whittaker, Hector Lombard, Derek Brunson...185 is better now than it's ever been.

It may be easy to forget that not that long ago we had Anderson Silva as the top 1,2,3,4,5 fighter in the division, and Rich Franklin in spots 6-8 and a rotating cast of jabronies changing for spots 9 and 10 every 3 months.  .

I don't know man.  I think I take the Spider vs random jabronies over that cast of meh.

This is spot on. Franklin was the clear second-best middleweight for a while. And he got starched by Silva. It was sad to watch.

With regards to today's 185 scene, there are indeed several solid contenders. And anyone knocking Souza as a legit stud will have a hard time convincing me they watch very much MMA.

little devil's advocate, but I still, for the life of me, can't figure out what happened to Jacare when he fought Romero. That was the beginning of the long waiting line for Jacare. I remember cause i bet Jacare kind of heavy in that one. I have to watch it again, but i remember thinking either (a) Jacare is one of those fighters who can have "off-nights" or (b) i must be missing something with Jacare cause he just didn't look good that night.

but yeah, if you had to ask me who was the best MW right now, i would likely say Jacare as well

They need Jones back badly.

And IMO they need to do a much better job with DJ -- and the flyweight division in general to create good contenders for him. I know that he's a tiny little manlet, and doesn't trash talk or run his mouth at all, but DJ is an unbelievable fighter. And flyweight fights are fast, technical, and exciting. Put them on the main card so people start to see and recognize them and will care about the division. I'd much rather see two top little guys instead of the sloppy brawling between 2nd rate HWs that gas out and do nothing after the 1st round.

Brendan Schuab had a good breakdown of the co-main.  He is picking Khabib by a slight decision, because he thinks with takedowns he will win rounds.  Repeatedly said, he has never lost a round.  Also, he thinks Tony can't submit him from his back, and the chokes he does winswith will be hard to get on Khabib.  He also said he could see Ferguson messing Khabib face up with striking, and elbows while he is on his back.  He could also do some flashy things fans will remember, but the takedowns ultimately win the rounds for Khabib.

Pretty much exactly how I see it going in all likelihood. Although I think that Khabib will inflict plenty of damage too; dude has some ferocious ground and pound.

Anybody ever use Xbox to buy PPVs? My buddy is having a get together and doesn't have any other options.

His internet is very good but when I use my Fight Pass on Xbox it's kinda grainy.

Thoughts?

War Wonderboy!

As interesting as this fight was, I kind of don't want it to happen since it makes the future title fights less compelling.

Let's say Ferguson won then lost to Connor.  Well what's the next compelling fight at LW for the champ? The guy who lost to the guy you just beat?  Or Dos Anjos the former champ who also lost to the guy you just beat and also lost to the guy you beat to win the title?  That basically leaves Barboza, which is an interesting matchup, but he's also 3-2 in his last 5 and has lost most of his fights against the top contenders @ 155.

Basically the same thing if Ferguson becomes champ.  Maybe there's rematch potential if the fight was close and exciting.  But Khabib is out, Dos Anjos is out, Barboza is out.  That leaves Alvarez who was champ for about 30 seconds.  Not quite as compelling to the general audience.

Hospital visit right before the weigh-in suggests a problem with the weight cut.  Has he had problems with this in the past?
Yeah, but only once that I know of and it was a long time ago. Still, though, if that is what this is (we really don't know yet) they need to come down hard on him -- and on every other fighter who screws things up by missing / trying to cut too much weight. Same penalty as getting popped for PEDs would be good IMO -- missing weight and putting events in jeopardy because you're trying to cut too much to gain an advantage is just awful for the sport.

I'm hoping Cowboy busts through the weigh in door "I'm Here" and somehow makes 155.

Khabib-Ferguson fight is off officially per UFC.

Hopefully is awhile for Khabib to get a shot at 155 belt

If I'm El Cucuy's PR team, I have him carry around a title belt everywhere he goes this point forward. Give the UFC what they want.

#### -- at least I learned years ago not to order any of these until right before they start. So does Tony just get the fake belt now without fighting for it? If I were him, I wouldn't take it.

Wonder what it'll take for us to see legit same-day weigh-ins. It's ridiculous.
Was just about to post this.

Surprised UFC hasn't implemented this. It only benefits them and fans as it removes one factor to fight cancellation.

If they're gonna do away with IVs might as well not half ### it.

I'd love to see it, but it'll never happen. There probably isn't a single guy on the roster who would be able to stay in their current weight class. The titles and rankings would get completely blown apart.

what a gut punch... so sick of this sport :(
I don't want to blame AKA, but the amount of fighters from that camp that have missed fights or pulled out of them is significantly higher then the average. If weight cutting mishap, we will see, but I am wondering if it is something else

I don't know how far we have to go to change things, there are only a handful of guys I can think of that have had issues since the IV ban. And that includes fatty Big Rig.

I would wait for more info, call me a cynic, but I am thinking there is more to this story, and we will see if we ever find out. I call some serious b.s. all around here.

And as much as all of us hate this, the guy that really needs and should be pissed is Fergusson. Total bull#### for him and unprofessional of AKA and Nurmy if it is due to the weight cut

It would be complicated for the champions, to be sure, but the fighters themselves loathe the weight cut process, and apart from leading to less fight cancellations, it would benefit the fighters' longevity - and consequently, their potential value to the UFC. It's not like Ferguson the welterweight would be of less value to the company than Ferguson the lightweight, at any rate. As for the rankings, it's not like they're of any value right now. The UFC could easily make a big media event out of the transition and restructuring of the weight classes and rankings.

I wouldn't bet on it happening any time soon, because it doesn't fit the UFC's M.O., but I could see it.

If it's because of weight cutting that is some amature crap.  Has Tony said anything yet?  They have had mics in their faces all week, certainly we should be hearing something...

Anyway they try and get a last minute fill in?  Maybe they just try and book it for 210.
