Round 5

Mad props to these guys. Miocic weathered some bombs in the first. Three heavyweight defenses!!! Ngannou was tough too and never quit when he easily could have. Hopefully, he learns some technique.

Miocic 10-9 and 50-43.

Miocic/Cain will be awesome.

Awesome to hear Ngannou say he underestimated Miocic. Hopefully, he'll make a real effort to improve technique.

I don’t think Ngannou can learn enough to do anything on the ground. He’s 31 and is WAY to far behind the curve. His conditioning is bad but he also stormed in the 1st (which he usually doesn’t) plus he’s never had a title fight like that before so the adrenaline dump was probably pretty bad.

Last start, but I've got up to live now. Thoughts so far:

When did Miocic become "Miachitch" instead of "Miochitch"?

Tibau's chin is probably gone. People just can't get hit for years and years and still be able to take hard shots.

It has been a while since I've seen someone with as bad of takedown defense as Bessette. It was the reason he lost.

On the other hand, Arce's was terrific. It was the reason he won. Arce looks like a great prospect. I have no idea where a judge found a round for Ige.

Man, Pantoja getting to Ortiz's back was impressive. Nice reversal from Ortiz. Had to be an exhausting first round for both, but Ortiz didn't look like he was tired from it at all. I had it 29-28, Ortiz. Was a bit concerned the back control he gave up would cause him to lose it.

Oh, dat uppercut. Not sure why there was a standup, but Alhassan looks like he could KO middleweights.

I'm shocked Dominick Cruz like Bochniak's movement. It was solid, though. I'm also shocked Davis trains with Jason Knight. They both act like ##### without really accomplishing anything in the UFC. When they went to Davis' corner, it seemed like all three of those guys were yelling different things. That's terrible.

I really like Rob Font, but this fight was disappointing. Almeida looked fantastic, but he simply can't take a big shot anymore. For that to be the case at a young age, it seems like Almeida won't be long for this sport. Sad.

While there are brief exchanges, I don't remember an exciting Gian Villante fight. The Barroso judge might have fallen asleep.

I really like the Rogan/Cruz combo. While they both are comfortable speaking on any aspect of fighting, Cruz is more knowledgeable on the standup, while Rogan is more formidable when discussing groundwork.

Kattar/Burgos exceeded my expectations. Of course, I had zero expectations. Excellent first round. Kattar's jab, yo! Very surprising to see Kattar come back in the third. Burgos looked like he was taking control in the second.
I said the same thing about Davis' corner. Some of these corners are just so chaotic, I understand how some fighters lose their head.

Solid night of fights. I'm going to bed.

Oh, Lordy, dat body shot by Pico. I like the matador thing. The first time. The other two just seemed weird.

Really weird to see Glazer on a UFC competitor's broadcast. I'm surprised FOX Sports allowed that to happen.

Good to see Chandler back.

McCarthy was okay in his debut. I would expect him to improve as he gains experience in this role. It would be awesome if he would stop saying "hisself."

Why are they having Round 1 fights in the Grand Prix spread out so far? A fight tonight, another in a few weeks, one in April, and the other who knows when. Makes no sense.

It's hard for Lima to be in a boring fight, but MacDonald got it done. I think I'd rather watch Villante than MacDonald. His shin will never leave my memory, though. Lima's decision to hold on while in guard was baffling and lost him the fight. I don't understand the 49-45 card at all.

Rampage looked slower than ever. I wanted to smack Goldberg for comparing him to Tyson. His decline saddens me.

Hopefully, he'll make a real effort to improve technique.
hard to have technique when you have no wind.   He looked so dead.

brutal.  looks like Ngannou has zero skills outside of power punching.  no cardio either.  embarrassing fight for him.
It’s because he has zero cardio.  Guy needs to put the free weights down and get on a treadmill.
I'm going to disagree.

Without seeing any of Ngannou's training, I'm going to guess he puts in the road work and works his cardio. He can probably run for a long time.

His problem is lack of technique. Instead of making small movements to remain standing or get off the fence or get off the mat, he explodes. The most strenuous aspects of grappling are trying to move your body when someone doesn't want you to and trying to move someone's body when they don't want you to. If your opponent has better technique than you, huge movements are your only option. Those big movements could not be more draining. Unless you've done it, you can't imagine how completely exhausting it is to grapple from a disadvantage against a skilled opponent.

Stipe was a bad match for Ngannou.  He has the ground game to beat him. Not sure many other heavyweights want to go to the ground. Dont forget stipe was outweighed by nearly 20 lbs as well.

Can we change the thread title now? The one trick pony been exposed.

Seems like Stipe is a bad matchup for everyone.

I said this after Joanna got beat, but I'll say it again, mma fans turn their opinion so quickly on one loss. Ruthless.

The more I watch, learn, practice, etc, the more I realize that matchups are just hugely important.

Ngannou is going to be fine. He has been in the sport for 5 years! He needs to learn to play off his back but the sky is still the limit.

Absolutely!

i like that he is living in Vegas now, should have plenty of opportutnity to hear from other coaches and get good sparring partners. would be fun to see Frank Mir work with him for a bit

Well sure, but he had to get through that 1st round, which by no means was a given. Miocic did a good job of hanging in there after Ngannou clipped him in the 1st.

I'm not sure the sky is the limit for him. He's 31, has no ground game, can't wrestle, barely sprawls.

He'll keep knocking people out but is miles away from Stipe and Cain. He's running out of time.

What's the best team in Vegas? Xtreme Couture?

Finally watched the Bellator event late last night.  Couple passing thoughts:

Aaron Pico's livershot KO from this event was as good (bad?) as you're going to see.   I pooped a little bit just from watching.

Even with the loss, Douglas Lima is a BMF.   Rory outpointed him, but see which of the two of them feels like doing some sparring today.   I don't care what org or for a belt or not, Lima is a monster and I will watch every fight of his I can.

Rampage at 253#?   good grief.   this Bellator HW tourney is a train wreck.  I aint proud, but I'll be watching.

He trains at the new UFC Performance Institute.     It opened recently.  They didn't have time to institute a cardio program which explains why he gassed 3 minutes into the 1st round.  I made that last part up.

I know all that. The UFC PI is a training facility, it's not a fight team. All the training videos I've seen are of Francis punching and kicking. That's not a complete mma fight team. He needs more than just striking coaches and massages.

Massages sound nice

In on the thread title...

Ngannou will be fine, needs some more training.

Stipe fought an almost flawless fight, it was as close to perfect as you can get. Ngannou didn't pace himself and was gassed to quickly, although for someone with his style, tough to avoid that against Stipe.

He had a perfect game-plan and executed it to a T, he's an amazing and very disciplined fighter. Like to see Ngannou train hard for like 6 months, then take on Cain, and let the winner get Stipe.

Ngannou's team is simply out of their league. In the post fight interview he said Stipe had a smart game-plan. Not really. A doofus like me laid out the exact strategy Stipe needed to win, it's not rocket science. If Francis's team didn't prepare him to sprawl and drill take-down defense, then they failed him big time.
I think he needs to train at altitude to get this cardio up ASAP.

But even if he doesn't improve, Francis Ngannou can still headline PPV's KO'ing anyone not named Miocic or Velasquez.

I agree that the path for Stipe to win is to take Ngannou to deep waters. A quick look shows that he has to be into Round 3 in the UFC. I am not sure about his pre-UFC fights, but even still, it is has been a while since he has been into a fight over 10 minutes. I do think Stipe stops him in the 3rd or 4th.
Reading comprehension down?

Even with all of this, Stipe showed he was in a different class - I was pretty shocked, I had bought into the Ngannou hype train too. After the Overeem fight, I thought the guy was on the brink of being a superstar... A healthy Cain is the only person in the division I think matches up nicely against Stipe.
