Joey Porter fires back at Seahawks' comments

Wednesday, February 01, 2006

By Paul Zeise and Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

DETROIT -- Steelers linebacker Joey Porter has been waiting for someone from the Seahawks to say something -- anything -- inflammatory. It appears he got his wish. And in typical Joey Porter fashion, he clearly won the war of words, at least for one day.

Porter was asked today what he thought of comments by Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens, who yesterday said that it is too bad Jerome Bettis's career will end without a Super Bowl trophy because it could have been a fairy tale ending to a great career.

Porter wasn't shy about making his opinion known.

"Now I'm looking for him on game day, now I'm looking for Stevens," Porter said. "He has to line up in front of me, and that information you gave me just got me started so I'll be out there looking for him at the 50-yard line. That information will go a long way because Stevens can't hide from me. He has to line up in front of me and I'll remind him of [what he said] every time I put him on his back.

"I was focused on football until right now, when you told me what [stevens] said. I don't blame him for thinking they came down here to win, but he said what he said and I'll be ready for him. I can never get an offensive player to say stuff like that no more, I'm always battling defensive guys. It is great that the tight end said it because I don't [ever] get to go against a tight end like that."

Porter didn't stop there. He was just getting warmed up.

"He should know his role," Porter said. "He hasn't done anything that makes anybody fear him, while Jerome is a Hall of Famer and everybody knows about him. Meanwhile, this guy is almost a first-round bust who barely made some plays this year. He has the nerve to say what Jerome is not going to do when he isn't going to be the deciding factor whether that happens or not. I'm going to make sure he don't have anything to do with the outcome of the game.

"I would think someone would say something, but I wouldn't think it would be him -- he's too soft to say something like that. He'll have the opportunity to back up his words, but I'm going to have an opportunity to back up my words.

"You ever see the movie "Underworld"? I was sleeping all week, but I got my first taste of blood right here, and it is great when you haven't tasted it in a while. This week was boring until now. He definitely is one who hasn't earned the right to say what's on his mind. There is no way he can hide from me. I needed to hear that, I needed something to get me going."

After this morning's round of interviews that ended at 9:15 a.m. the Steelers went straight to work at the Pontiac Silverdome. There, all of their meetings, a catered lunch and practice will occur. Practice was scheduled for 1:15 p.m. and was to last about two hours, the same schedule for a Wednesday during the regular season. They will follow the same procedure tomorrow.

"It's kind of good to get back to football,'' coach Bill Cowher declared early this morning. "I think that is what we are all kind of looking forward to now. The fun and games are over with now and it's getting ourselves ready to play the game.

"It'll be a normal Wednesday practice, fast tempo and just a normal practice,'' Cowher said.

Halfback Duce Staley, given time off since the weekend to attend his father's funeral in South Carolina, did not appear at the team's interview session this morning but was expected to join them at practice.

As long as he keeps playing the way he's been playing, I don't care what he says. It's not going to have an impact on the game.

I guess Stevens didn't get the memo that the Seahawks are conceding the game before it starts.

He has to line up in front of me and I'll remind him of [what he said] every time I put him on his back.
If I was Stevens, I would remind him every time to look up at the scoreboard.

Anyone remember the story about Porter going to the Raven's team bus after a game to call out Ray Lewis? He was trying to fight him.Pitt has TWO CSU linebackers, I love it.

Why this aint golf.

More, please.
Exactly.Steve Smith took the cake last year when he laughed about Freddie Mitchell taking himself seriously. He went on to say that Mitchell sucked, telling reporters to make sure Freddie heard the news. Then, he says to tell Freddie if he has a problem with anything he said, he'd fight him, ANYWHERE, ANY TIME. :lmao:

LOVED THAT.

I think Porter runs his mouth to pump himself up more than anything else. I'm not a big fan of that but, whatever. As long as he keeps playing the way he's played the last couple of months he can run his mouth all he wants.

He's no Matt Hasselbeck, that's for sure.

Who else wants to see Porter try to go after the 6'7 265lb Stevens? A 6'7 265lb guy with problems with violence...

He didnt back down from a man with a gun. What makes you think Stevens will scare him? :boxing:

I've liked Matt ever since that quip before OT in the GB game. He genuinely loves the sport, and that is refreshing to see come out so often. It's just a game, and I think he has a great grasp of that, along with ample humility. Good for him.

Oh, poor little 6'3 250lb choir boy Joey Porter? I think he can handle things just fine...

Dude, the guy went out of his way to find the Ravens team bus, so that he could get Ray Lewis out of it, and fight him. And this only a few weeks after he was shot -- he wasn't even back on the field. :lmao: He's nuts.

And look what happened.
Well if a bullet is what it takes to slow the man down, I don't think things are looking good for Stevens. :P

:lmao: The best clip in recent weeks is the one with him at midfield before the Bengals playoff game -- jersey pulled up, screaming at Chad Johnson from across the field. I was scared just watching.

This is probably the lowest grade of trash talker there is. Anybody who has to wait for someone else to say something to justify themselves for saying something is pretty juvenile. Kind of suprised Porter just didn't reply with the old standard, "I know you are but what am I?"

Cut Joey Porter some slack, the guy is an attention whore.

Actually I really don't think he is an attention whore. He's just a very passionate player with a very short fuse. He wasn't looking for attention--he was sincerely pissed off.

Me, because right next to Stevens will be the more massive Walter Jones.

No? He didn't back down from that guy? Then please explain how he ended up with a bullet up his ###.

TIA.

Every time he opens his mouth, Porter moves up my list of biggest jackasses in the NFL.Someone should have reminded Porter that at least Stevens is a full-time player and a starter as opposed to an over the hill situational running back.

Actually wouldn't that be precisely the reason why he DID end up with a bullet up his ###?

Pretty sure it was actually a stray bullet. I think there were two shots fired (outside a club in Denver). It sounded like they were fired into a group or something.Either way, if you think Porter was backing down from some clubbers, that's hysterical. Even if he was running from someone about to shoot him with a gun, that's called a good decision. I mean, give me a break. :lmao:

Yeah, your point is meritless.

I know the bullet was stray and I was just trying to make a point. I think we're on the same side of the argument here

Nice to see so many people have their trusty :sarcasm: decoders handy. Anyway, Porter is a thug IMO. I'm sure if he wasn't a Steeler I would likely hate him. But, as fate may have it, he is our thug and we love him for it. ;)

I was joking around, my friend. :sarcasm: I personally have no vested interest in the details surrounding Joey Porter's ### getting shot up.

:boxing: :boxing: About time somebody tried to put some piss & vinager into this butt smooch fest, I thought there was going to be a group hug at the 50 yard line before the game... :hot:  :boxing: :hot:  :boxing: :football:

I remember Greg Lloyd running his mouth before the Super Bowl with the Cowboys. It wasn't Aikman or Novacek who he called out that shut him up. It was Nate Newton twice on the first series. He flat buried Lloyd. The first one is my favorite play from that entire Super Bowl. Squish and ouch and very funny. On the next series it was Larry Allen-- pow. Lloyd was barely heard from ever again in the history of civilization. I'm sure Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson are taking notes. This could be it for Porter. ;)

I do think a HUGE part of this game is Seattle's O-line. Pitt's pass rush has been instrumental in their recent run, and quite honestly, I doubt they can do it to Seattle. That's why I will be betting the crap out of the Seahawks.

Lloyd did get crushed on the first Emmitt run of the game, went for about 20 yards. But he (along with Levon Kirkland) completely shut down Emmitt and the vaunted Cowboys O-line after that. The Cowboys ended the game with 25 carries for 56 yards (2.2 AVG). Lloyd was a big part of that.Porter will have his hands full with Walter Jones, no doubt.

 What a civil response from a Steelers fan. Good for you. I was just adding to the trash talk expecting to get ripped by a Steeler fan. I'm impressed. I like Frenchy too.

Fwiw, I predicted a Steeler win when I started the pinned thread, and my quote above is just messin' around.

Walter Jones is no doubt top-notch, but the Steelers already have 12 postseason sacks. Even more impressive is that their opponents (IND, CIN, and DEN) were 1,2, and 3 in the NFL in least sacks allowed this year. So I wouldn't count on the Seattle O-line pitching a shutout.http://www.nfl.com/stats/teamsort/NFL/OFF-...=11&_1:col_2=11

Lloyd was barely heard from ever again in the history of civilization.
I think that's less because he lost a first quarter battle with a fat man, and more because he ended up nearly on his death bed, atrophied with a massive infection.
