Underrated 80's/90's songs... (1 Viewer)

"Rainbow In The Dark" - Dio

"Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)" - Flock Of Seagulls

"Pale Shelter" - Tears For Fears

Girlfriend - Matthew Sweet
Another :goodposting: Also like Evangeline by Matthew Sweet quite a bit.

There are thousands of underrated 80's songs IMO. You always hear people saying "The 80's were full of one-hit wonders." My reply is always, "That's because there was a lot of good music out there and bands had to actually compete to get play time on the radio. These days all you have to do is just get one hit, and then the record companies stuff your crappy albums down the public's throats for the next ten years."

Here's a few 80's tunes I can think of off the top of my head that, though commonly known, were still underrated IMO:

No Myth- Michael Penn

Where Are You Now?- Jimmy Harnen with Synch

A Girl Like You- The Smithereens

Alison- Elvis Costello

Life In A Northern Town- Dream Academy

This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide- The Kingsmen

Magic Power- Triumph
I think "Alison" is a late 70's song.
Check the '79 draft - I think you're right.

You know, I think you're right. My bad. It sucks when you're talking about decades of music and there's always that cut-off line- ie "That song actually came out in Januray of 1980, so it was an 80's tune." I guess I just always think of Alison as an 80's tune even if it isn't. :P

Yikes- I thought I switched that over to say the Kings, but didn't edit it. I get to typing too fast and forget to go back.

Adding a few more as I go through my iTunes Library:

Adam Ant - Wonderful (80's artist, 1995 release)

Cheap Trick - She's Tight

David Bowie - Blue Jean

Thomas Dolby - Hyperactive

The Pretenders - Night in My Veins (Lots of great 80's releases by them. However, I think this 90's song is underrated.)

Replacements - I'll Be You

From the XTC/Dukes of Stratosphear dept. I'd add "Generals and Majors" by XTC and "Vanishing Girl" by Dukes.

Around the time of Generals and Majors was another unmentioned tune called "Ah, Leah" by Donnie Iris.

And  for mentioning the Producers. I got to see them at The Bayou in DC in the late 80's. Lots of good tunes.

And whoever mentioned Stan Ridgeway, don't forget Far Side of Crazy.

Finally, I'd add "Everywhere I Go" by The Call.

That's the very first Producers song I ever heard, and it was enough to hook me.I know I've seen it in similar threads, but another not mentioned is Driver's Seat by Sniff 'n the Tears.Message of Love by the Pretenders was unappreciated in its time, and the very first music video I ever saw. :bag: :nerd:

Gone, gone, gone, she's been gone so long.... (I'm starting to think I would enjoy having a few beers and listening to tunes with you.)
Anytime you're up in NYC, give me a shout.
Wow, I'm only 90 minutes from there.Any other of the "music guys" from here live within an hour or two?

We could plan a FBG get together.
