The Pianist was a very powerful movie on the Holocaust that was a big budget.....also believe it or not Life is Beautiful was an incredibly powerful Holocaust film.I agree on Schindler's List. In 1996 (my Sr. year in college) I took a class on the Holocaust. We watched a ton of different movies about it (many artsy films) and then Schindler's list. When the professor asked us to "grade" it, I gave it the lowest grade by far. Many people in the class bristled and thought I was nuts or trying to prove some odd point, but then the Prof revealed his grade and it was much closer to mine than theirs. Interesting thing about it is that there were only two non-Jews in the class (myself included) plus the professor. I think the movie means more to people as a popular movie that brought the Holocaust to light (and reinforced it on a generation that knew little about compared to the previous two), than it was an actual good movie on the Holocaust. The best movie (from what I remember) that we watched was one called "White Jew"...I remember I could barely get up from my seat after that one.I think Schindler's List is overrated. It's one of the world's best directors doing his favorite topic, but, to me, it's not a top ten film.
And, generally, after 1995, no more World War II stories. You had 50 years with it. Find a new story.
Sunshine was also another heavy heavy movie spanning through two World Wars and the Holocaust from the russian jewish view point.
Schindlers List was a very important film though.....being jewish I appreciated the fact this story was finally told. While not the best Holocaust film ever made it was good and powerful and had some incredible performances.
