Unpopular Movie Opinions (1 Viewer)

I think Schindler's List is overrated. It's one of the world's best directors doing his favorite topic, but, to me, it's not a top ten film.

And, generally, after 1995, no more World War II stories. You had 50 years with it. Find a new story.
I agree on Schindler's List. In 1996 (my Sr. year in college) I took a class on the Holocaust. We watched a ton of different movies about it (many artsy films) and then Schindler's list. When the professor asked us to "grade" it, I gave it the lowest grade by far. Many people in the class bristled and thought I was nuts or trying to prove some odd point, but then the Prof revealed his grade and it was much closer to mine than theirs. Interesting thing about it is that there were only two non-Jews in the class (myself included) plus the professor. I think the movie means more to people as a popular movie that brought the Holocaust to light (and reinforced it on a generation that knew little about compared to the previous two), than it was an actual good movie on the Holocaust. The best movie (from what I remember) that we watched was one called "White Jew"...I remember I could barely get up from my seat after that one.
The Pianist was a very powerful movie on the Holocaust that was a big budget.....also believe it or not Life is Beautiful was an incredibly powerful Holocaust film.

Sunshine was also another heavy heavy movie spanning through two World Wars and the Holocaust from the russian jewish view point.

Schindlers List was a very important film though.....being jewish I appreciated the fact this story was finally told. While not the best Holocaust film ever made it was good and powerful and had some incredible performances.

Also working against Schindler's List is that it's not an enjoyable watch. It's a miserable story.

I just continue to be staggered by people who don't like The Godfather though. If you don't like The Godfather, you don't like cinema.

Anything Tarantino
Agree 100%...this guy essentially developed a unique "style" of crappy movie, patented it, and convinced others that it was fantastic cinema.

And for the previous responses here, pass me "I Know What You Did Last Summer," and I'll watch it before I'll watch Pulp Fiction again. At least I can stare at JLH in her prime.
Tarantino has a talent for dialogue for sure. As the years go by I grow less and less enamored of his movies as a whole though. Dude is passionate about his craft, but I think his love for mimicing the b-movies of yore has worn thin for me. He always seems to just step over the line too much with the over the top scenes. There are at least 3 scenes in Inglorious Basterds that I thought were some of the best I watched on film in years: opening scene, basement bar, and restaurant. Then he goes overboard with stuff at the end and the shootout in the theater. He is best when it is 2-3 people talking, but he can't help but get all Grindhouse on our asses at some point in his recent movies. Ask me 10 years ago, and Pulp Fiction would have been in my top 5. Now I would prefer other movies of his - Jackie Brown, IB, and probably Reservoir Dogs I would put in over PF. Honestly end up FF through the scene at his characters house and anything with that annoying blueberry pancakes #####.

I will echo somebody's post from above about not getting comedies in general, but for me it is more older 'classic' comedies. Most I didn't see at the time, or grew up with. Started trying to catch up with some in the last decade and sat stone faced through most of these movies:

Caddyshack, Animal House, Airplane, Mel Brooks movies, Vacation, etc.. (I know I am missing some)

Also, people have mentioned The Godfather, but I dug that one. For me the one I will never get the love for is Goodfellas. Use of the annoying voiceover and the annoying Joe Pesci, and it took all my energy getting through it once. Appreciate the talent of Scorsese, but don't think he has made a great movie since the 80s. Some very good ones in the 00s, but not great.

Couple more, just in case that didn't get me banned from here: Cable Guy is Carrey's best comedy, and Starship Troopers is great.
I enjoy Starship Troopers as a guilty pleasure but it's B level.

Cable Guy really? I think Broderick ruins it for me.

Goodfellas is not everyone's cup if tea. Takes a couple viewings to start to like it.

And comedy is one of the most subjective genres. You like what you like. Someone might think Big Lebowski is the greatest comedy ever (not me) because that's their style of humor and find caddyshack or animal house boring.
I still think underneath the b-movie feel of Starship Troopers is a very smart sci-fi movie. Same could be said of the directors other movies in that string of 3 in a row - Total Recall and Robocop. Love them all.

Comedy is definitely a hard one to pin down with people. I will never admit to having a sophisticated sense of humor: Coen brothers comedies or Wes Anderson movies do zip for me. I think i like a weird blend of immature raunch and dark/uncomfortable humor. Cable Guy just hits a weird spot for me and I know I love it more than most. Same with Death to Smoochy - I think critically panned, but it still cracks me up.

Some of these responses I'm wondering how your mind works that you can hate these movies. You must look at the world in a completely different way than I do.

Some stuff like Royal Tannenbaums I can understand if people don't like it. Even Big Lebowski, which is my favorite comedy.

But Godfather, Pulp Fiction, Sideways? how can you not appreciate those? Great filmmaking, great performances.
This has been firmly established over the years. ;)

I'm not saying that The Godfather is a bad movie or isn't well made. I just think that the characters don't do things that are all that interesting.

Pulp Fiction I've only seen once but the over-the-topness seemed to be its hook and I didn't find that interesting either.
Godfather is all about the motivations of the characters. So much under the surface.

Pulp Fiction I saw in the theater right when it came out, thinking I was going to some random crime movie. Knew nothing about it because it was before the buzz and I was totally blown away, saw it in the theater 2 more times. Kind of a special place in my heart for that one.

Lost in Translation bored me, and I hated the characters. Take a bus tour or something. Mopey in a hotel bar is not compelling to me.
I thought I posted something on this already but I can't find it...

Ever stayed at a hotel in a big city in Japan? It captures that feeling perfectly. The relationship between Murray and ScarJo is maybe the best un-consumated romance in movie history. Love it so much. Gets better with multiple viewings. It's Top 10 for me.

"As Good As it Gets" was highly acclaimed, and won a whole ton of awards. I saw that movie in the theatre and was so bored, I literally was wandering around the lobby looking at other movie posters, because I found it more enjoyable than sitting and watching one minute more.

Are guys really supposed to like this movie?

Agree w poster on Citizen Kane - often listed as best movie ever. So incredibly boring. I can't do it.

English Patient - couldn't make it through

I didn't like Fight Club or Inception.
I have never seen Fight Club. I have no real desire to do so. Inception wasn't bad but it wasn't an instant classic either IMO.
There's more to it than you might think.
I think it's a commentary on society.
Not really, IMO.
According to Fincher it was a study on how the machine(society) was already built and just needed bodies to run it. Sounds like a commentary on modern society to me.

I don't think he understands his own move...or the book.

Edit: No really. I don't see how that description fits with Fight Club at all.

spoof movies are not funny, and yes- that includes mel brooks' movies.

hard to live up to the first two, but by itself, alien 3 is a solid movie.

I just watched the Blue Ray Directors cut of Alien 3 yesterday. It is a very solid movie.

What I loved about the Alien series is each movie had it's own flavor.

Alien - A true isolation survival horror move. A true classic.

Aliens - An action packed sequel…lot's of Aliens, lot's of action and one liners. A classic.

Alien 3 - a high quality prison flick with Alien as a back drop. Solid characters, great acting, brutal movie. I loved the ending too.

Alien Resurrection - Mad Scientist, Frankenstein type of Alien flick. Obviously the weakest in the bunch, but a decent movie with the rag tag space bandits vs the Military, vs. the mad doctors.

I'm sure Fincher had his own reaction to the book - I think to him it was about the Hollywood machine and how it just needed bodies to run it.

All I can say is watch it...twice.

I think Pulp Fiction is a joke. Yeah, heresy.

Tarantino is like M Night Shyamalan - one good movie and several crocks of poo.

Ferris Bueller.

Dude was a snotty, annoying little ##### who's friend shoulda kicked the #### out of him when he wrecked that beautiful car. Never thought Ferris was a "cool rebel".

Wow.

Tarantino is my favorite director (tied with Kubrick) and M Night is my least favorite so this comparison is.. yeah.. no

M Knight has never made a good movie. That guy makes complete paint by numbers bull####

I loved it. Sorry there weren't enough explosions for you.

Gave "Children Of Men" another try last night.

It's still not a very good movie. Cool tracking shots, but not a good movie overall.

I didn't like Fight Club or Inception.
Agree on Fight Club.Disagree on Inception.
Agree with FightClub - I turned it off about 2/3 of the way through. With the exception of Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love, PT Anderson can't make a movie less than 2 hours long and which ends up completely depressing and pointless by the end.
So you basically shut if off before the point where most people realize "holy crap. This movie is great!" ?

No, I turned it off when people kept wailing on each other for no apparent reason. And I missed the stupid ending where Fight Club started because Edward Norton was beating himself up in the parking lot while people watched.

Pretty sure it's about fighting.

Agree about Pulp Fiction being overrated and not liking Woody Allen and Monty Python films.

Another overrated film I've noted on here before is Dr. Strangelove. I "get" the point of the satirical take on a sensitive issue, especially at the time it was made. I just didn't think it was really funny and was over the top schtick acted...like the Python films.

that particular point of the movie made me so mad I had wasted any time on the movie. The only silver lining is that it reminded me of Patrick Duffy in the shower. mmm boy.

That was truly awful and made me mad because it was on its way to being a pretty good movie in the early going.
