This is just quintessential Sunk Cost Fallacy. For a team struggling for credibility on and off the field, this should be simple - and could really be a "make hay" moment if they spun it correctly.
"The Jacksonville Jaguars aren't just an organization pursuing wins on the football field. We also endeavor to be something that our staff, players, and fans are proud to represent and support.
When an employee stays late, or player rehabs from injury, or parent buys a jersey or ticket as a gift for their child - we want that to be positively meaningful. They should feel that everyone is similarly dedicated to making the Jaguars a winning franchise.
When members, particularly those in the upper levels, of our organization damage that perception through self serving and questionable activities - it results in an untenable working relationship as it works in direct opposition to that camaraderie.
It is for these simple reasons that we have decided to immediately terminate the employment of the head coach. It is clear to us that the upward direction we intend for this franchise will be better served by having someone else at its head.
To our fanbase - we know have asked for patience more times than necessary. This is a continuance of the effort to get it right. Our focus continues to be on providing a team that you can be proud to support, and that you are proud to have represent your community."
Something like that...
In other words "We screwed up. We're sorry. We're not going to try to make chicken salad out of chicken poop. So we're just going to start over again...again."
