Not doubting Tomlin is a good coach..but remember he took over a SuperBowl ready team with a young stud franchise QB.  Tomlin did not take over the Lions or Jags.  Situations can make a break a coach and player. Is Tomlin a good coach?  Yes.  would he have have the same career with Jags or Lions?  No

Same with Ryan Day at OSU  Day took over a loaded top 5 program, not Rutgers.  So is Day a good coach?  Yes..would he be doing the same at Rutgers?  No.

A bad idea. A disaster. So many heads had to be in the sand while vetting this hire that it's almost some sort of professional malfeasance. 

This guy had so many reas0ns why he would just be a l0ser in the pro ranks. It's not like they hired a guy with the temperament for this. This guy was complaining about free agency and NFL protocol on Day One. His first acts as head coach were to complain about tampering. 

This guy was brutal. MoP had this dialed from the beginning.

Even funnier that someone will make an offer for him to coach a major Div.1 college football team tomorrow, if not already.

dickey, it's the saddest, especially knowing how he treats players. One of the great entertainment injustices of the late 20th and early 21st Century is how these adults don't get paid to bring in billions in revenue. Just fundamentally wrong. And then when they do get paid, their pay structure is negotiated by a bunch of people already with seniority in the league. Just...everything about the industry is something ####ed, and it's not supportable in good conscience at times. One has to let one's conscience take a backseat to what one is watching. 

Oooh, is it 5:20 yet? Time for KC/LA!!!!!!

Spurrier was absurd. He's never coached at the professional level, umm he did in the USFL. He will never...NFL teams have switched and still use his 3 WR sets. It was a two back set before him. 

Y'all were angry Tebow- one of the nicest guys ever- was a camp body.

Bevell said he pulled Robinson, Meyer says he doesn't micromanage and omg y'all still blame Meyer. 

We all knew the Jags would stink but this whole omg he didn't win....that's something else.

My favorite is the story of a private meeting between he and his staff where he called the staff of a team with a losing record, losers. Y'all did but he's ridiculous for doing so? There are 10k coach meetings every year and zero info gets out but this one is leaked? Oh and how dare he say whoever leaked it will be fired.

The guy wasn't awesome and I'm not saying he should be this or that and I'm sure not his supporter but...really people? Really?

Y'all got so away from football. Where's the discussion about their free agency and draft and how it's turned out? How is Lawrence doing? Do they have a defense? Ya can't tell by discussions this year.

This sooo odd.

So do the Jags hire another former Bills coach? Are we forgetting they were a decent team and blew it up? They were the worst team in football last year and I'd bet a ton of money this off-season is blaming Urban for their demise.

I don't wonder why Stoops hasn't coached in the NFL anymore

I dont think I have ever heard anyone defend him.   You make some good points but the guy is a slimeball liar and questionable coach imo.   Jags made the right move for sure.  Should have never started with this clown

 
I'll miss the very high level schadenfreude. His kid seems to be trying to fill that void but man, her work here seems more like a cry for help.

I mean, picture yourself a grown ### man with 3 kids and 6 years in a hard knock league and 10 million in the bank. You're going to be treated like that? Yeah, no. Literally any established vet is going to be like "dude you're a joke."  And he seemingly never understood that he needed to abandon his (horrible and unethical) approach. Head Ball Coach? You gone. 

I've never really paid much attention to college football but the fact that the power dynamics involved there enable that kind of approach is pretty telling.

Couldn’t disagree more. There was 5-6 win talent there. Vegas set their win line at 6.5 before the season.

Smoother seasons tend to yield better records. 
when your rookie QB feels the need to respond to your coach’s issues and isn’t getting properly developed, that usually means fewer wins. 
even if they would have had the same record, their team would have been further developed with a better coach. 
 

If this brings Ledtwich, bienemy, or Dabo in next year, they’ll be okay I think. Although They might not want to give the job to another college coach now.

Detroit Lions were 5.5 before season.

Jags win total was probably tallied with Lawrence stepping in and being a solid QB.  I though he would be one of those QBs who just came in and be a star but he has struggled.

They also have a bad coach. And that win total isn’t right.

As is usually the case, Jimmy Johnson's interview about Urban is fascinating and ya gotta listen and find it in the web if you can.

Remember he was downright hated in Dallas in the beginning. He supposedly wrecked their culture and history....until people came around to maybe this guy does know what he's doing.

Anyway it's a good listen

 
Comparing Meyer to Jimmy Johnson seems off to me. Yes, Johnson had a rough first year, and he and Jerruh were a little too brusque in how they dismantled the Cowboys of old. But they had a plan in place that made sense to anyone willing to think objectively about it, and they said upfront that the team was not going to compete right away. Johnson was one of the best football minds of his day and that was apparent from the start of his tenure in Dallas.

Meyer had absolutely no idea what he was doing, nor did Khan. He showed zero sense of how to manage teams and players in the NFL, and he brought nothing innovative to the table.

Fair point, but "maybe, maybe not" when you look at all the college to pro coaches in recent history.  Jimmy was unique in that he had a plan when he got to Miami and took the same plan to Dallas:  Speed on defense.  He also had a gamblers mentality to coaching (If the guy is covered and that guy is Irvin, throw it anyway) and the onside kicks he ran against what was then the dominant washington redskins. Finally, it was also a time where not a lot of this stuff ended up on social media and he treated his players like men.

Urban and Saban came in thinking they were gods, treated their players like they were college kids when they were professionals and basically didn't connect.  Neither one appreciated being questioned by the media either. (Jimmy was incredibly media Savvy, even when he was coaching the dolphins).

Spurrier just thought his college approach to offense would overwhelm the league (he basically thought the rams "greatest show on turf" was his system at UF/Duke) but didn't spend any time on the defense and put too much faith in moderate armed QBs.

TO bring a college coach to head your team in the pros, its almost better to get one that has experienced some losses and rebounded from them well than the "fragile ego god of a head coach" template.
