Urban Meyer - Free Agent (3 Viewers)

First of all I can`t stand Meyer from his OSU days.  Successful college coaches like Meyer and Saban find out real quick the NFL is a different animal.

Coaching at Alabama and OSU would be like coaching an NFL team that gets 4 first rd picks, 4 second rd picks, and 4 third rd picks every year.  Success is assured because of the talent level makes it tough to fail.  Failing is losing 1 maybe 2 games a season.

JAX was horrible last year as were the Lions.  Both get news HCs and both still stink this year.  There is very little talent on both teams and watching Lawrence he makes horrible decisions.  Sure he can get better but right now he is terrible.  Can`t win with Lawrence at this stage.

Even though Meyer is a doosh I don`t believe the kicker incident. With the talent on JAX just like the talent in Detroit we have no idea what kind of coaches they really are.  All of a sudden Mike Tomlin is not looking that good with an aging Big Ben.  For the most part talent wins in the NFL and Meyer has none on his team.

I admit I enjoy watching Meyer lose but if Jax was 8-6 right now I doubt anyone would be saying anything.

If you are jerk and winning it works, it does not work when you are losing.
I actually think Tomlin looks better than ever holding that crap roster and Big Ben together like this.

Do you really think a coach is going to kick a player in pre-game warmups with everyone standing around?  Meyer is a doosh for sure but this one is tough to believe.

Meyer got fired so it does not matter anyway.
The Jaguars organization acknowledged the incident was reported to them after it happened in August.   I have no idea how hard the kick was but it's not like Lambo is just making it up months later.

Well Meyer just got a 40 million dollar paid vacation.  Lets see what desperate college he ends up at.

Yeah, if the Jags were 2-11 but the franchise QB showed signs of growth, Urban would still be employed.

If the Jags were 2-11, and the HC knew his players names, he might still be employed.

If the Jags were 2-11 and not subject to weekly embarrassing stories that might or might not be leaked by the front office, he would still have a job.

Instead the OC of an offense that has scored 6 TD total in last 7 games has been elevated.

Bring me Bienemy, Leftwich, Kellen Moore - anybody who can develop Lawrence
Josh McDaniels 🤔

yes he'd be good and there's also a non-zero chance he'd turn down the interview.
If I were a team developing a young QB I think McDaniels would be my #1 choice. I know he had his issues in Denver and the whole Indy fiasco but I'm betting he has learned from both situations. Plus his talent for working with QB's is unquestioned. Selfishly as a Pats fan I would like to see him stay but can't say I wouldn't enjoy seeing him give it a shot with Lawrence.

Both Holtz and Petrino ended up at Arkansas the year after leaving the NFL. I wonder if Urban is making calls to Fayetteville this morning.
Temple and Colorado state have vacancies. Or he “retires” again and gets something better next year.

The fact that this tool will get hired again really magnifies what a dumpster fire college coaching really is. There are definitely good guys in the mix but lots of snake oil salesmen for sure.

Are Jags going to pay it, or claim fired “for cause”? Probably enough grounds for the latter. My guess is they settle for some lesser amount.

Yes. It's actually mild compared to some of the other s*** he's done.

I think Urban Meyer is the type that feels  he can do anything he wants because there will always be another idiot billionaire waiting for him with open arms.

Those are beneath Sir Urban.

Needs to go to a school like OSU where they will overlook his dooshiness.  Maybe back to Florida?

Is this the same as Adam Gase's and Matt Nagy's unquestioned talent for working with QBs?

I don't think so, McDaniels has a better track record. Especially when it come to planning around a QB's strengths. He worked with an established Brady of course but also Cassel, Tebow,  Jacoby Brissett, Jimmy G and Armless Cam. His adaptability to all those styles and getting the most out of them sets him apart IMO.

I see you managed to forget all the really damming stuff in there.  Hand selecting a strength and conditioning coach who wasn't just a huge racist, but also ended up hurting a number of kids.  Bringing in a qb/pitcher to play te, no matter how nice he is, when there's tes on the roster already.  Skipping a team flight home after a loss then lying about it until video showed up of him at a bar getting a lap dance.  The leak story not happening during the season but after two /pre/-season losses.  Failing to improve or develop the generational qb he was gifted. Literally kicking his kicker.  Also a coach who doesn't micromanage should be a huge red flag, that's literally the job.

The Jags weren't a decent team.  They had one year where they were able to get into the playoffs. Then everyone wanted out and their defense was left with nothing and Bortles did his terrible thing.

Nobody is saying "omg why didn't Meyer turn the whole thing around in a day".  If the Jags were still a 2 win team and none of the Meyer induced circus happened then we'd be talking football.   But the circus was what we got, and so the circus is what we talk about.  He died by his own hand.

Hopefully they'll get a coach that can turn Shenault into the new cpatt/deebo.
I wrote a short novel and you're complaining I left stuff out. He was fired the day he took the job and if you scroll back to the beginning of this thread you can see fans wanted him gone so quickly.

You "can't" say the Jags we're a bad team if they made the playoffs. I agree they imploded but this was a prob before Urban. They were the worst last year and he's taking all the blame.

I don't think it's fair people expected success for any QB their rookie year nevermind Lawrence. He's showing he's got the goods and taking his lumps like oh so many before him. We often look for a big improvement in year two and I expect that from him.

The Jags need trenches help and it's been a systemic problem. Even when they assemble a decent line it doesn't last but for like one year. Bottles and other QBs were sacked similarly often. They should spend every pick on trenches or else I don't think a new coach is going to do very well.

And don't add a Bills castoff either

I agree. There's probably enough "NFL head coaches don't act that way" there to make "for cause" a possibility.

According to this, any dispute is handled not in a court, but by the commissioner. Not good for Meyer.

I'm also sure there's more that we don't know about yet. Does Meyer want all that public, along with that bar video on the news again and again? Much better to settle and move on.

This is a perfect example of what might be my favorite word...grifter. (What? You don't have a favorite word?) As in the following:

Tom: It's a grift, Leo. If she didn't need you to protect her brother from Johnny Caspar, d'you think she'd still go with you on slow carriage rides through the park? That is the deal, isn't it? You keep Bernie under wraps 'till Caspar cools down?

Leo: Jesus but you're a prickly pear. What's wrong with her wanting her brother taken care of?

Tom: Not a thing. I don't blame her. She sees the angle--which is you--and she plays it. She's a grifter, just like her brother. They probably had grifter parents and grifter grandparents and someday they'll each spawn little grifter kids--

Favorite word - sesquipedalianism

Least favorite word - doily

Looks like Jags could be in trouble for not reporting the "kicking the kicker" incident to the League office: PFT Twitter

Someone took it out today. Because I swear I did one this morning
Not sure when they did it but I noticed on Youtube even though you can vote thumbs down, the count doesn't stockpile like they do when you vote thumbs up.

So a video with 2 likes and 98 dislikes or thumbs down will only show there are 2 likes.

Oh yea they took away the thumbs down last week. It still counts but no one can see it but the video owner.

If you write a short novel about Ted Bundy and leave out the murder and cannibalism he seems like a charming guy.  Leave out the genocide and ww2 and Hitler seems like a great orator with a sweet tooth.  Leave out the fight for racial equality and Martin Luther King Jr is a regular old preacher.  Point is - if you decide to ignore the key points then sure, you can look at reality any way you want.

As for why the Jags fans and people with knowledge of football in general hated the hire @Ministry of Paini started off the thread with a lovely series of bullet points as to why.

I don't believe I said the Jags were a bad team when they made the playoffs, but I disagree with the idea.  Bad teams sneak into the playoffs all the time.  Hell the entire Nfc east was a train wreck last year and they had to send a team to the playoffs - are you going to tell me any of those teams was deserving, let alone good?  Now what I did say was that after their playoff run the Jags had a mass exodus of great players, mostly because of poor coaching (at least I remember at the time jags players telling others not to come while the current regime was in the building).  Eventually it lead to them catering last year and the flashy hire of Meyer, which was never a good move from a football perspective.

Rookie qbs are extremely easy to evaluate.  They only need to answer one question: as the season goes on did they improve?   In Lawrence's case the answer is no, and what's worse is he, and the offense as a whole, is back sliding.   Remember Meyer's claim to fame in college was his offenses.  But that was years ago, and if you watch the offenses the Jaguars run they're some of the most boring least inventive in the league.   If Meyer was a defense oriented coach in his first hc position then you could blame this on the oc, but he's not.   He's a multiple time HC with an offensive background.   No excuse.

The Jaguars need a complete culture shift.  I don't like Dan Campbell as a coach and think he's way out of his depth, but nobody will argue that the culture in Detroit is a billion times better than it was last year because Campbell genuinely gives a #### and puts all of himself into the team.  That's what the Jags need more than anything - a leader who will leave their entire heart and soul in the building.  Then you can focus on building a winning team.  But as it is now the locker room culture is never going to breed success and Meyer is just another in a long line of terrible jags front office moves.

Khan has a net worth of $9b.  Even if he had to pay out the entire $40m, it would take Khan 30 days of interest to earn it back 😂
The wrath of Khan might come pretty cheap. He's an owner and Meyer won't ever see an NFL field again. And the commish is the judge.

Think he got a 6 year deal and I thought estimates were between 10-12 per year IIRC.

Eother way he did well and you’re 100% right that someone in a year or two will knock on his door and offer more millions lol

I like Tomlin, but a couple of 500 seasons gets you fired in the NFL. Just the nature of the game.
If Tomlin somehow gets fired(1% chance in my opinion) he'll instantly be the #1 coaching candidate for any team with an opening. He's an easy top-10 NFL coach.
