Horvath save from today

https://twitter.com/TheRealArturK/status/1072603132465700864

Horvath did not give up a goal in any of the three Champions League games he started.

Berhalters first big decision will be to choose between Steffen and Horvath.  One would think Steffen has the advantage her since he played for Berhalter at Columbus.
It's pretty amazing that the two top choices for GK for the USMNT are so young.  Horvath's form has been very good lately and Steffen had a great season.  Both should improve dramatically by the time the next WC rolls around and I'm excited to see it.

Tim Parker signed a new three year deal with NY.  He will be getting paid between 700k and 800k per year, which is great money in MLS for a defender.

It's nice to see such young options kicking ###.  I think it was just last year where GK was a huge worry in here.

I think Horvath is a good reminder to be patient with these guys and their development.  After seeing him against Portugal, I was 🤢

"We all must be careful what we expect from him, if he makes five, six Bundesliga appearances until the summer, it is a good a year for him." #Werder Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt on #USMNT FW Josh Sargent (18)

The average is a little over $800k a year.

The exact figures for Tim Parker’s new deal are 3 years for $2,406,600. #RBNY

Gregg Berhalter, recently appointed to coach the men's national team, flew to Atlanta to catch the MLS Cup between the Portland Timbers and Atlanta United at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Up next is a 10-day trip to Europe where he'll meet with national team players beginning on Wednesday. CBS Sports has learned he'll be making stops in England, Germany and France, where the majority of the European-based USMNT players are.

===================

Over the summer, FC Cincinnati came close to acquiring US international Fabian Johnson, but the deal didn't get done. That said, head coach Alan Koch won't rule out another try in the future.

Speaking to Grant Wahl on SI Now Live this week, Koch admitted that the expansion side still have interest in Johnson.

"We definitely have interest in Fabian," Koch told Wahl. "We had interest, we continue to have interest. I think a lot of teams would be very wise to take that approach. We're definitely exploring all sorts of different things."

Ignoring hockey for now, there are 3 states in the US that produce the most professional athletes.   California, Texas and Florida.

This is due in part to their population and weather conditions.

For soccer, we obviously do quite well in California and Texas, but Florida appears to be way behind what we would normally expect, especially considering their demographics.

I was hopeful to see the rumors that Beckham has hired Javier Moralas to run the development academy for Inter Miami.  Morales was one of the early Argentine players to have a great career in MLS, playing many years for RSL.

I still call the Stub Hub Center, The Home Depot Center.  There is no way I am ever going to remember the new name of Dignity Health Sports Park.

RB Leipzig did not make it to the knock out round for Europa League.  This is not great because the more games they had the more chances Adams would have had to play in the second half of the season.

Josh Sargent will once again be in the squad tomorrow for Werder Bremen when it visits Christian Pulisic and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday at 12:30pm ET

Sometimes only making $90k in MLS is the not the worst thing in the world.  This is horrendous luck for Shaq Moore

Future USMNT‏ @FutureUsmnt

Shaq Moore has gotten really unlucky in the "being paid" department of his career so far. Hasn't been paid in 3 months, and Reus might fold after their game this weekend. Had a similar problem at Huracan Valencia too before they folded. Yikes.

What a day for John Brooks in Wolfsburg's 2-0 win over Nurnberg. 80 touches, 6 clearances, 8 aerial duals won - all categories were the highest among all players. Wolfsburg with 3 wins & 1 draw in its last 4 games. #USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter on hand to watch

One of the most important tasks for Berhalter...find the “real John Brooks”. If he does, massive game changer for #USMNT

According to Spanish outlet Cadena Ser, Atletico Madrid tried to sign Christian Pulisic but Dortmund said there is an agreement in place with an English club already. Interesting.

Interesting that Berhalter went to watch Weston play, who did not get in, but instead got to see Haji play a full second half.

the weekly update from stars and stripes.... (eta: nice to hear about Parks after I've been wondering- a bit disappointing to hear that he's been pushed into the deep playmaking CMF role like swagadams)

Germany

Haji Wright - Striker, FC Schalke

Wright was back in the first team this weekend following last week’s injury to Guido Burgstaller (who will be out for the rest of 2018). The 20-year-old started on the bench but was brought on at halftime with Schalke trailing 1-0 after a poor first half. Wright looked much more comfortable than he did two weeks ago, contributing with a couple nice moments of holdup play. In one of those instances, Wright helped create one of the best chances of the second half with a nice layoff pass that played a teammate into space and forced a good save from the Augsburg keeper. In the 82nd minute, Wright scored what should have been the game winner, but it was correctly ruled offside as he mistimed his run slightly. The game would end with a 1-1 draw which has Schalke in 13th place, just three points ahead of the relegation playoff spot. Altogether, it was an encouraging performance from the young man. We may see more of him in the two games before the winter break and he needs to continue to show improvement to remain in Schalke’s plans. Keep an eye out for midweek football this week as Schalke will take on Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

Josh Sargent - Striker, Werder Bremen

Sargent also got another opportunity this weekend. The 18-year-old subbed on in the 83rd minute with Bremen trailing Borussia Dortmund 2-1 and looking for a tying goal. It was not meant to be as Sargent wasn’t able to get involved in his short stint off the bench. This week, his coach Florian Kohfeldt encouraged fans to hit the brakes on their expectations of Sargent:

“We all must be careful what we expect from him. If he makes five, six Bundesliga appearances until the summer, it is a good a year for him.”

It’s important to keep in mind how young he is and how much room he still has to grow. Still, it’s very encouraging to see him getting some first team chances at this age. Let’s hope he can keep forcing Kohfeldt’s hand.

Isaiah Young - Winger, Werder Bremen

With all the talk about Josh Sargent, Young has flown under the radar this season. Two years ago, Young had a very bright season for Bremen’s U-19’s, posting 3 goals and 6 assists in just 11 league games. Last year he moved up to the U-23 team and struggled a bit to adapt to the higher level of play (they played in the German third division last season before being relegated). This year, Young has seen a resurgence of form with 6 assists in 15 games. The attacker has been dangerous consistently and that has led to more opportunities. Young is now a fixture in the U-23 starting lineup. Hopefully he can continue to improve and put himself in the first team conversation sometime soon.

Italy

Luca Lewis - Goalkeeper, Torino FC

Lewis is a 17-year-old who moved from IMG Academy and has been in Italy for two years. Currently playing for their U-17’s, Lewis has 7 clean sheets in 12 starts this year. Lewis is yet another American trying to make it in Italy, where so few have been successful before. Let’s hope he can continue to push through the ranks at Torino.

Netherlands

Andrija Novakovich - Striker, Reading FC (On Loan at Fortuna Sittard)

The 22-year-old earned his first start in nearly two months when Fortuna Sittard travelled to Feyenoord on Sunday. Novakovich struggled in the first half. He had a golden opportunity when the ball was played over the top and he got behind the defense, but his first touch let him down as the ball deflected away from him allowing the defender to poke it away. He also had a great chance for an assist when he neglected to play a pass to a wide open teammate who was racing in on goal. In the second half though, Novakovich would make an impact. In the 51st minute, Sittard raced away on the counter and Novakovich made a great run from midfield. The ball was played in front of him and he cut it back and laid it off for the opening goal.

This was Novakovich’s first assist this season. Feyenoord pressured in the second half but were unable to find a goal and Sittard would slam the door shut with a second goal in second half stoppage time. Novakovich went the distance and helped his team get a huge victory. The win pulls Fortuna Sittard into 10th place in the Eredivisie. We’ll see if he can start to regain his form prior to his injury.

Scotland

Emerson Hyndman - Central Midfielder, AFC Bournemouth (On Loan at Hibernian FC)

It’s been an inconsistent season for Hyndman so far this year, but perhaps that’s turning around. Last week, the 22-year-old subbed on at halftime to make his return from injury. With Hibernian hosting Scottish giants Celtic, Hyndman earned his 7th start of the season since being loaned from Bournemouth. It was a dream start for Hibernian as they struck less than a minute into the match after Hyndman led the attack. Hyndman would go on to have a strong match and Hibernian would find a second goal and win 2-0. For Hibernian, the win has them in 8th place, 8 points behind league-leading Kilmarnock in the crowded Scottish Premiership. Hyndman is scheduled to end his loan in January, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Hibernian looked to extend through the rest of the season. We’ll find out in the coming weeks.

Portugal

Keaton Parks - Central Midfielder, SL Benfica

Parks has had a much quieter season this year after being in the spotlight much of last season. The 21-year-old has spent the entire season with Benfica’s B team, while adjusting to playing as a deep-lying playmaker. Parks was struggling a bit early in the season, but he’s starting to turn it around in recent weeks. Benfica B has won three matches in a row and hasn’t surrendered a goal during that stretch. Parks hasn’t featured or even made the bench for the first team this year, so it will be interesting to see if they look to loan him out in January to get some first team experience. If he stays, Parks will need to take advantage of Benfica having a busy schedule in the Spring. On top of league play, Benfica is still alive in the League Cup, the Portuguese Cup, and they qualified for the Europa League knockout round by finishing third in their Champions League group. Parks is a player who has quality on the ball that is rare in our player pool. I’d like to see him back in the first team picture soon.

CJ Dos Santos - Goalkeeper, SL Benfica

Dos Santos earned his first UEFA Youth League start last Wednesday against AEK Athens. The 18-year-old had been the backup option in the 5 previous UYL matches until he made the appearance last week. Dos Santos took advantage by keeping a clean sheet in a 3-0 win. Benfica ended up equal on points with both Bayern Munich (who featured Chris Richards and Justin Butler) and Ajax (who featured Sergiño Dest), but they were unable to advance due to goal differential. For Dos Santos, it’s good to see him continuing to improve. Look for him to play a part at the U-20 World Cup next May.

Some notes:

* Speculation is that if and when Porter is announced as the Crew coach, that Berhalter will name Josh Wolff as his assistant coach and Josh may be responsible for the U23's

* Sebastian Soto (he that did not impress during the U20 qualifying) has been called up to the Hannover first team during winter break

* Here is Mini Me Crouch's assist mentioned in the write up Floppo posted https://streamja.com/BjLl

* While many of us have bemoaned Pulisic's lack of progress this year, this reddit post shows that he is not that far behind some of the worlds best players when they were his age

VB have played 23 total games this year. Pulisic missed 5 due to injury. That means he has played 934 of 1620 possible minutes, or about 58%. Keep in mind he was left on the bench for a little as he worked his way back to full fitness. BVB is likely going to play around 52 total games this year, so if Pulisic keeps that percentage, he will play about 2,500 minutes, if not more.

Let's say he maintains his current rate of goals+assists that he has this season, that will put him at 8 goals and 11 assists (rounding down just to be conservative).

So 2,500', 8 goals, 11 assists is what he is statistically on track to get.

Now, let's compare that with some other big name attackers around the world and see what their seasons looked like when they were 19 going on 20. I am not implying CP will get to this level, only looking at the numbers that they have just so people can see what the standard is.

Mo Salah- 2,873', 10 goals, 11 assists (playing in Swiss league)

Lionel Messi- 2,954', 16 goals, 13 assists (playing for Barca)

Kevin De Bruyne- 2,994', 8 goals, 15 assists (playing in Belgian league)

Cristiano Ronaldo- 3,716', 9 goals, 10 assists (playing for Man U)

Marco Asensio- 3,047, 4 goals, 15 assists (Real Madrid)

Leroy Sane- 2,925, 9 goals, 7 assists (Schalke/Bundesliga)

Eden Hazard- 3,718', 10 goals, 13 assists (Lille in Ligue 1)

Dele Alli- 3,224', 10 goals, 11 assists (Tottenham)

Isco- 2,710', 5 goals, 5 assists (Real Madrid)

James Rodriguez- 2,600', 14 goals, 11 assists (Porto in Portugal)

Christian Pulisic, projected- 2,500, 8 goals, 11 assists

#thfc The club are in talks with Swansea City about terminating Carter-Vickers season long loan after making only 8 appearances and then allowing Cameron to re-join Ipswich on loan from January. CCV made 17 appearances in a 6 month loan spell with Ipswich last season.

if things go the way I expect, Dest and Lainez are going to be directly battling each other for a decade when the US plays Mexico.

As such it is interesting that they are likely to be playing together at club level, as Lainez is moving to Ajax.

Seems like a whole lot of smoke for there not to be a fire when it comes to Pulisic being on the move this summer at the latest. Chelsea and Liverpool, which is the better fit for him style and playing time wise ?

This is kind of odd.  One day after the Chelsea loan rep said that Miazga was in a very bad situation and that Chelsea could abort the loan, Miazga has been called back into the first team for the next game for Nantes.

Horvath and Steffan were born two months apart.  Could have a nice 1-2 combo in the works for the next decade or so, and it's nice to have two cracks at developing a legit #1.

They have played together in our youth teams for years.

I don't know if either is going to be as good as Howard was but I think both have a chance to be better than Guzan, which is more than good enough for what the US needs.

Informal poll:

Who's the 2nd-best USMNT player?
When he is good, it has to be Brooks.   We all know that consistency is a problem for him in Concacaf play.

Next year at this time might be more interesting since we are hopeful that Adams, Sargent and maybe even Mendez might have broken through in the Bundesliga.

Speaking of Mendez, he won the US Young Player of the year today.
