US Men's National Team (22 Viewers)

but mls has to figure this out. does it have to do in any way with US child labor laws?
I think the child labor laws are more tied to the issue of Solidarity Payments.

I think the only way MLS can fix this is that they have to start taking risks and signing some of the top young players to pro contracts early.   But there are some big financial issues with that obviously in a league with a salary cap.

I hate to even mention this but I almost wonder if MLS needs yet another category called YAM (Youth Allocation Money), where they can sign some of these kids with out effecting the roster before they get poached for nothing.

A U20 international like Ledezma should be sold for no less than $750k, which might sound small but can go a long ways into replenishing the development academies financially.

makes a lot of sense.

Would that 750k had stopped the signing though? Maybe not this time, but other signings? I'm alright with it. If RLS wanted him or his rights they should have had him under contract.

I have no idea but I am not sure that is the point.  We need to get to a place where we work like the rest of the football playing world in these cases.  No team in the world allows a good young talent to leave for free if they can avoid it.  If we want our academies to continue to create talent we need to make it financially viable.

Sargent is such a balanced player.

He is not great at anything but appears to be at least good at every thing.

He has two really good feet.  He is technical.  His soccer IQ appears good from his runs and the angles he takes to free his shot windows.

He is just big, fast and quick enough.  He is good in the air.  And his work rate is good.

But that's not how any American sports work. We have playoffs, salary caps... Our own way. Looks like I'm being guilty of this right now. And when it comes to this issue in particular, we have the D league in NBA, a minor league system in MLB, and a practice squad in the NFL. The Redskins just lost a promising WR to the Saints from thier practice squad and will receive zilch.

On different issues I think it's really weird that our sports have drafts and hold players rights so much stronger than the rest of the world. A hockey or basketball team can some dude in Europe who plays as a pro over there and if they decide to come over they have no say in it. Do our pro teams have to pay academies when that happens? Not contract buyouts like Ricky Rubio and Yedlin. More what we're talking about.

I don't care how American sports work to be honest because soccer is not just an American sport, it is a true global sport, something that is meaningless to the other American leagues as the global market in those sports is significantly smaller than soccer.

I only care about how we can keep developing talent that has a financial model to sustain itself.  IMO, MLS can not use the typical American model because MLS is a small player in a huge global market.

The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL do not have to worry about the global market because they are at the pinnacle of their sport in a MUCH smaller global market.

ok this is obviously harsh but still funny.

Sargent has 76 games to draw even with Altidore in top 4 Euro league goals (Sargent needs 1 more goal to tie Jozy).

Yeah I get that. I'm just giving you a different mindset. It's not our sports instinct to do it that way so I don't see it changing. Just like we'll never get rid of the draft, playoffs, or salary caps. And we'll never have promotion relegation either (sorry, @roadkill1292).

The draft is a crazy thing to try and explain to the rest of the world.

The one thing you're issue has going for it is money to owners. Owners like money. So maybe.

agreed, this is the key point.  Not only do they like revenue, they hate useless losses, which is what many of the MLS academies are facing as they spend money developing players that get poached.

Ironically it was not an American who is going to be the catalyst for change, it is a Canadian.  The vast majority of the MLS ownership group sat up and paid careful attention after Alphonso Davies was sold for a record fee.

It is of no coincidence that for the first time ever Garber publicly stated the league has to become more of a selling league this fall.

Davies started the ball rolling and if Almiron goes this winter as expected, the ball will start moving faster.

"Draw even with Altidore for top 4 Euro goals". That that meant only 3 other guys scored more Euro goals than Altidore but now that sounds weird and I don't understand you're stat.
oh my bad, I copied the stat exactly.  It should more clearly read Top 4 Euro Leagues (England, Spain, Italy, Germany).  I will edit to make more clear.

edit, wait, it did already say top 4 Euro leagues....

Article about Weah from goal

What's happened to PSG's Tim Weah? The teenage star aiming to complete the American dream
21/12/2018

The promising 18-year-old has been consigned to the sidelines in recent months and is poised to move away from the capital to gain first-team chances

Timothy Weah’s explosion was one of the stories of pre-season as he proved there is far more to his game than simply being the son of 1995 Ballon d’Or winner George.

The teenager burst onto the scene with Thomas Tuchel’s Paris Saint-Germain and appeared set to have a significant role to play at Parc des Princes this season after scoring in the 4-0 Trophee des Champions win over Monaco and then again off the bench versus Caen on the opening weekend of Ligue 1 action.

It seemed that he had seized his opportunity, with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, the club’s frontline duo, fatigued having only just returned following World Cup duties with France and Brazil respectively.

Despite scoring a goal for every 72 minutes he’s been on the pitch this season, Weah has subsequently faded from view and since playing one half against Guingamp on August 18 has not even appeared on the teamsheet for Tuchel.

The arrival of Eric Choupo-Moting in the closing hours of the summer transfer window has seen him cast to the shade, despite the former Stoke man netting only once in 12 outings for the Parisians.

This falls against a backdrop of the German showing his willingness to give academy prospects Stanley N’Soki and Moussa Diaby, whose contribution of three goals and five assists from only 534 minutes has eclipsed that of his fellow youth-team graduate, increased first-team exposure.

Indeed, Weah has earned far more game time with the US national team, with whom he has played five games, including four starts, and totalling 359 minutes.

Otherwise, he has been restricted to training with PSG’s top team and flirting occasionally with playing in the B team, earning his spurs by scoring two goals in three outings in the French fourth tier, where games are often played on little more than public parks.

Nevertheless, he knew there was this possibility when he sat down with his mother – who is the parent who has largely overseen his footballing development, despite his illustrious father – to discuss the best course of action during the summer.

“My mom, she thought I am still really young and tender. There’s still some stuff to work on,” he said in September.

“She thought if I did go to a lower team in the same league, there would be so many expectations to carry that team or potentially fight for a league winning spot. I don’t feel that I’m ready for that.

I’m always ready for a challenge but right now I feel like training with PSG, training with Neymar, Thiago Silva and getting better each day - I feel like that’s the way to go. That’s the choice we made.”

Over the ensuing months, he has not changed his perspective, which is mature for an 18-year-old.

“Right now, I’m not playing but I’m always looking for progress, to do more, watching others and learning from them,” he said, speaking in November. “I’m waiting for my chance, but I hope I can go on loan soon.”

His chance is liable to arrive in the days ahead, with clubs from around Europe clamouring to play their part in the development of the son of a legend, who is a highly promising talent in his own right.

“Tim is in the ‘American mould’, always smiling, with his headphones over his ears, laidback and still needs a good relationship with his coach,” former PSG reserve both Francis Rodrigues told Paris-United. “I think that finding time with a Ligue 1 or even a Ligue 2 side would be good for him. He must now step up a level away from Paris, where the bar is set extremely high.”

And of course, there is top-flight interest in France, with Strasbourg leading the way in that regard, though with Amiens hovering, too.

RMC, meanwhile, report that there is interest from the Bundesliga, where another former PSG academy product Jean-Kevin Augustin has impressed for RB Leipzig since making the move in 2017. Stuttgart and Leverkusen would offer such options from Germany, while from Serie A, the likes of Sassuolo, Fiorentina and Lazio lurk.

But while it seems that in the short term, Weah’s future lies away from the French capital, he has already shown himself sufficiently capable to have earned a longer future at Parc des Princes, where he is under contract until 2020.

His exploits last summer were a glimpse of what he is capable of, but after this false start, his real breakout seems destined to follow.

Gotta catch em all!

Werder Bremen Coach pumping everyone's breaks on Sargent

=====================

"Josh did a good job today, much better than Dusseldorf... but he has also occupied spaces that he should not occupy... Despite all the euphoria, he has to get to know a lot more tactical processes in order to be able to play permanently."

"Josh has put himself in a very good position for the second half of the season. It's not automatic for him to become a regular in the second half of the season. But he can become a very good alternative in attack."

Link to the goals.

Siebatcheu has yet to commit his national team future, and remains eligible to play for France, Cameroon, or the United States. His only international appearances were in two matches for the France U-21 team in June of 2017. According to a report from The Athletic in October, he declined a call-up from U.S. Soccer for June’s friendly against France. While he has expressed interest in playing for the USMNT, he remains steadfast in his public desire to play for France.

might as well get the whole team in Germany at this point

I'm hearing that Eintracht Frankfurt and a few other European teams will be making offers for Aaron Long

Nice way of saying charrypicking???

I am not sure as this was translated.  But in any case, Sargent is a striker.  Cherry picking comes with the territory.

IMO, what the coach is doing is a classic coaching move of down playing his young players accomplishments so they don't get a big head early and keep working hard.

Remember this is the same coach who said a couple of weeks ago that if Josh gets 4-5 appearances by the end of the season he will have done well.  And then the coach goes on to play him in three straight games.

I assumed bnb was kidding.

If not, forwards are expected to make certain runs and coverage on both sides of the ball in certain situations. Sounds like Sargent's still learning the system and where he needs to be situationally.

The rehabilitation of Andrew Carelton is beginning with a local winter youth camp. It was eye-opening to hear Eales discuss Bello as the youth FDB will influence without mentioning Andrew.

Here's hoping he can refocus in the off-season. He's a good kid with a good foundation that hopefully will find his way without anymore youthful mistakes.

did we ever get conformation that he was out at a party the night before the game or was that just a rumor?

I was not surprised to see him missing for the final for that possible infraction but I was surprised that he was banned from the parade celebration.

Jonathan Lewis has been added to the US January camp.
Nice!  I remember seeing him in the summer...hope he shows well in Jan.

Has there been any talk about Johnathan Lewis from NYFC?  He’s looked pretty good from the few times I’ve seen him sub on. He seems to be getting more mins lately.

Matt Doyle is a big fan. Patrick didn’t seem to rate him. Hoping he impresses the new guy.

Berget’s also hurt (so basically NYCs first choice front 3).  He pissed off Vieira, but seems to have a 2nd life now.  His offense has never been in question, but more his defensive contributions on the wing.
