US Men's National Team (16 Viewers)

oh... been meaning to look up Jack Harrison, who is scary good and only 19. english.
left the man u academy to go to the US for HS. went to Wake Forest for a year, where he was the only all-american freshman in the country and #1 pick in the MLS draft of the FIRE, who wisely traded him away to NYCFC. because, why would hte FIRE want good players anyways?

Here is one bit of good news has gone under the radar.

Stuggart are one of the favorites to get promoted from Bundesliga 2 this year and 19 year old US Joel Sonora was just named to the first team roster to start the season.

He played for Stuggart 2 previously.

His father is Diego Sonora, who was a long time Argentine Pro and was a multi time all star in the early days of MLS when Joel was born.
Sonora made the bench today in Stuggart's opener against St Pauli.   They are losing 1-0 at halftime.

I had high hopes for him. He had a terrible tournament last year though. One of those U-somethings... World Cup?

great.

too bad boyd has lost this time. struck me as beast, physically, but still learning the ropes in terms of spacing, runs, etc. he and woods were neck and neck to me, and similar types of players IIRC- direct, strong, athletic, and tbh- I felt like Boyd had more upside. but woods has obviously grown the rest of his game a lot in the last couple years. has boyd gotten a consistent run of play without injury in that time?

Boyd has not played a "real" game in since I believe Dec. of 2014 when he blew out his knee.

He has played this entire preseason (practices and multiple friendlies) with no set backs though.

ok- thanks. that's what I thought... but as I always mention and exhibit- the memory sucks and I tend to displace who did what, where and when. hopefully he can back strong and put himself into legitimate US contention instead of just a young, promising guy for the future.

Yeah, he is going to need to make an impression quickly as he is no longer a young player.  He is 25.5 right now.

well.. ok, then. I guess.

they're still dealing with injuries to start the year, right? there was an interesting conversation between a couple of you guys comparing relative minutes to guys last year... that would be worth a reboot, IMO. also a look at the pecking order in front of him, assuming he stays as a lone, target forward.

As near as I can tell, Green is the only #9 on the team after Lewandowski.  Obviously Muller can play there, but they haven't replaced Gotze.

Gotze had 1200 minutes in all comps last year.  I don't expect Green to get that much, but 700 or so seems doable.

Green gets 700 minutes at BM this year and I'll need new underwear from being so happy.

thanks.

transfer window is still open though, right?

any word from our BM people about whether they're looking for more players? possibility that they move robben up there?

Training with the first team and getting 500-1000 minutes still seems TGTBT to me.  But what an opportunity if that's how it plays out.

I have to give the kid a ton of credit.  He said before the summer started, with no quams, that he was going to make the first team squad.

Look at that roster, that is a fantastic feat no matter what the reason he made it on.

That's the question that's never been answered.

How many players does that give us in Bundes now?  Glad he's getting a loan, does anyone know if he's penciled in as a starter? A full season playing in Bundes should do him well.
Boyd, Chandler, Morales, Fab, Wood, Green, Brooks, Pulisic, Bacon, and now Miazga.  Did I miss anyone?

Outside of Chandler, I don't know anyone on that team but with Miazga coming in so late, I am unsure he will be a starter until an injury or poor play occurs to get a chance.

something must be up some where because Miazga was said to be missing from Chelsea training today.....

Union traded their first round picks the next two drafts for Bedoya and Davies.

Earnie appears to be making a big bet on their academy churning out first teamers.  Hopefully that benefits the Nats down the road too
Today we saw another example of Earnie banking on the academy instead of the draft for young talent:

Union signs US U-18 CB Auston Trusty to a homegrown contract.  He passed up a scholarship to UNC to sign with MLS.

Union's second homegrown signing this month (after MF Derrick Jones)

Landon checking in on some of the player development issues we face in the US

Donovan rues USMNT missing Rio 2016; sees big issues in US player development
Yes Landon!

“There’s no question and it is part of the answer. You need 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 years olds players to get better and better. Equally as important for me is kids that are 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Right now we have too many coaches at that age who care about winning as opposed to caring out developing players and making them better. That’s a big problem, for me,” Donovan said. “If we ever want to get to the next level then we have to get that sort of mentality out of our game. We have to say that we want to develop players and we don’t care if we are making a ton of money or the next coaching gig is based on winning. If you’re an under 8s coach your next coaching gig should be about how many players you are developing. That’s where I think you get better.”

Green looked much different this summer than he did all of last year.  I think Bayern will give him multiple opportunities to win a new contract in the next 4 months.  I don't think he'll get 1000 minutes, but I could see 700 in the next year.  Aside from that, even getting to train with the first team will do wonders for his development, although I also hope they can go deep into the Cups and give him more opportunities.

Green can make the BM roster, one of the 4-5 best club teams in the world but can't make the USMNT for a tourney two months earlier.  This just seems all kinds of weird.

(I don't remember him being hurt, so correct me if I'm wrong.)

IIRC, he didn't exactly light the Bundesliga 4 on fire last season.

don't worry dude...Wondo has us covered.

that's not bad- and better than what I was thinking (which was about half that). I don't know much about the context- are other 2nd teamers from other teams putting up 20+ goals, or is 10 a good number in the 4th div?
There are 5 different 4th division leagues in Germany.  4 have 18 teams, 1 has 19 teams.

Bayern Munich 2 plays in what is termed Regionalliga Bayern, which consists of 18 total teams (including 1860 2, Ingolstadt 2, Nurnburg 2 and others).

The top 5 goal scorers in the league, according to wiki, scored 19, 18, 17, 15* and 14

* Was Green's team mate on Bayern 2

was green out for a bit? I thought he was. if so... and given those other numbers... 10s not bad at all.

regardless... 10 was good enough for BM to have him train and play all summer with the big boys, where he obviously did enough to justify staying with them. it's pretty great stuff.

Bacon played the final 30 minutes for Werder in their friendly game.   First time back on the field in a long time.

Herzog had this to say about Boyd:

"I did not expect him in to be in this type of form. Terrence is a fighter.” Herzog said.    "He needs some more match practice. But if he continues like this, he will soon be a candidate again for the national team.”

In non US specific news (at least for maybe 18 years ;)  ) Diego Valeri re-signed with Portland yesterday and the Timbers owner said that Diego wants to retire and live in Portland the rest of his life.  Start making babies!!!!

good news about Bacon. would really like to see him get back to health... would be the next deuce, which the country sorely needs. scrappy, hard-working woods type players are nice too- but somebody with that ability to play the unexpected ball- once dempsey retires, there's a huge hole.

Quick Spurs update:

Carter-Vickers was given a squad number this season - 38, and Poch spoke very highly of him in his in-house interview this week.  Said he had good character, and showed real qualities this pre-season, and is ready to compete for a spot on the PL team.*

I don't expect that he is really competing for a spot, but it does seem that he has shown enough that he will stick around the club, at least until January.  I don't expect him to make the bench very often, but he should be in the match-day squad for Cup games, and would be available to step up in the event of injury in other games.

Yedlin also got a number, but he did lose his #12 to Wanyama, and now has #32 - maybe showing his versatility as a LB/RB...I expect Yedlin to go out on loan, but there really is nothing on the rumor trail of anything happening right now.  Spurs are not great at pushing loans, so its going to come down to a team approaching Spurs in need of a RB.  Sunderland is still a possibility, but less so after Sam left.  Moyes seems to prefer to do business with United.

*side note, but Dominic Ball, who was CCV's partner v. Juventus was sold by the squad to Rotherham...

Watford have made a bid for Kenedy while Matt Miazga will reject Eintracht Frankfurt after receiving offers from Premier League ahead of next season, Goal understands.

Kenedy has agreed to move on loan to Walter Mazzarri's side, who are now working out the details with Chelsea after Antonio Conte was unable to promise the 20-year-old regular first-team football next season.

Miazga, 21, will also move on loan to a Premier League club but he has yet to decide between two unnamed teams, having been told he needs more experienced to feature in the heart of the Blues' defence.

The American had attracted interest from Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt but they stopped short of making a bid for him after Chelsea made it clear they prefered he played football in England.

Both youngsters are expected to have long-term Chelsea futures and have only been offered to the Premier League clubs for one year with the hope that they develop enough to join up with the squad next season.

Seems like a big risk for Miazga, with big upside if it works out. Regular minutes in the Bundesliga or English Championship seemed a great option if available. Hoping Miazga and Chelsea make a wise choice here.

I think this is posted on the right thread. If not then #### off!

In the German Super Cup, Green made the bench as a sub but Pulisic didn't.

Who would have predicted that a few months ago?

Yeah, I don't see how a guy like Green ever breaks into the Bayern team on anything close to a consistent basis. The second any other German team develops a forward better than him, Bayern will just buy that guy.

Cool to see Green presumably making some progress, but if was truly good enough to play for BM, we would have seen some sort of hint of it over the past 2 years.

Rooting for a transfer.
Dont cross the threads

I feel cursed.  There is no team I enjoy watching less on the planet than Sunderland and every single year, some Yank abroad is playing there :)

Here is a nice video that compiles Gooch's touches and defensive positioning for his first game for Sunderland.  Given the opponent and his debut, I thought he played fairly well.
