US Men's National Team (18 Viewers)

I feel cursed.  There is no team I enjoy watching less on the planet than Sunderland and every single year, some Yank abroad is playing there :)

Here is a nice video that compiles Gooch's touches and defensive positioning for his first game for Sunderland.  Given the opponent and his debut, I thought he played fairly well.

Liked his motor/intensity.  Seems to have that 'dog and his ball' mentality.

Seems quite comfortable w/ the ball at his feet and trying to beat players off the dribble.  Not something we see often in a Yank.  (He did lose possession doing this several times.)

How old his Gooch?  I don't remember hearing much about him before.

Also had two more quality crosses in the first 90 seconds of that video than I've seen in Yedlin's career.
If Yedlin did nothing else with his skill set from now and until he retires, if he just added adequate crossing to his skill set, he could be a 6-8 year pro in a top league like the EPL.

I don't know if he can add something basic like that so late in his development curve though.

he is only 20.

The only time I saw him play was as a sub in a few US U20 games.  He always looked lively when playing.

He has a bit of a bull in a china shop feel to him even though he is not that big.
He may not be that tall, but from that stream he looks like hes quite thick in the upper body.  (Or it was a flaw in the way my screen maximized.)

I remember being surprised Gooch didn't make the last U-20 team, because I knew they were pretty high on him on Wearside.  He doesn't seem to be the most technical guy in the world.  Definitely dribbles into trouble at times.  But has some tenacity and a determination to go at people and try to make plays.  Closest analogue of a guy in the US system a lot who we've seen more of is Paul Arriola, IMO.

In England, does the transfer window closing also relate to loans?  I ask not only for the below, but also for Miazga and Yedlin

huh... I've always been impressed with Arriola's skills and decision-making, more of a sly player than what I've seen of Gooch (which isn't that much- youth US). Gooch strikes me as a connor casey type of guy. head-down, go at you, try to be in the right place type of player with determination and runs more than ball skills.

I don't think so - with a caveat.

Apparently this summer, they eliminated short-term loans.  Must be 6 or 12 months now.  So, it may have also altered when those loans must be completed.  I expect both players to have their situations sorted out before the end of the transfer window.

just googled... not sure this is definitive, but interesting that the "emergency loan window" no longer exists, as of this year... appears that loans have to occur within the transfer window: (from IBT) hopefully yedlin and mazda get sorted soon.

Football League clubs have benefited immensely from the arrangement. They can acquire a high calibre of player for a minimal fee and with a get-out clause should they need it. Frequently, the most profitable loan deals occur outside of the two transfer windows in summer and winter, during emergency loan periods which run for nine weeks from September, and five weeks from February. Short-term deals, no longer than three months, can be secured with freedom.

Last season, Premier League clubs sent out just under 200 players on loan, with the vast majority of them going to the lower reaches of the English pyramid. But those deals are set to become a thing of the past and that will affect every club, from the summit of the Premier League to the bottom of League Two. From the 2016-17 season, Fifa has abolished emergency loans, meaning all transfers, temporary or otherwise, must be conducted during the aforementioned windows.

The rule will force Premier League clubs to make swift and conclusive decisions over players as early as the summer window, meaning identifying the right club or manager will be more important than ever for a player, with no margin for error. Teams also need to foresee whether certain players can make a first-team impact, knowing they will have to wait until the next window if they do not fulfil their potential.

Nice goal by Jozy yesterday (stadium was empty due to game being postponed then rescheduled in the middle of some harsh weather in Houston (lighting)).  That is 3 goals in 4 games now for Jozy

Morris also scored yesterday for Seattle*

*Non US related but jesus is Lodeiro for Seattle the real deal.  I have no idea how this guy has stayed in South America so long.  I know this may be rushing things as he has only played 3 games so far but I think he is easily the second best player in the league behind only Giovinco.

I read that Jozy scored.... thanks for that link- loved seeing the fire in his eyes after that goal. really hoping he can get back into the fold with that kind of play. partnered with woods could pay some nice dividends for the nats.

Any of the Philly guys ( @Ted Lange as your Bartender @Jaysus) have a review of Bedoya's MLS debut?

I was thankfully at the Boston Comic Con instead of attending the Revs - Union game.
He started at the 8 in Vincent Nogueira's vacated spot.  Played about 70 minutes.

He put in a solid shift linking the defense and attack and tracking back to assist Warren Crevalle in a sort of double pivot midfield.  Some of that positioning was probably dictated by the Union taking a lead after 90 seconds.

Most importantly though, his presence allowed some of their other players to revert back to more naturally forward positions, most notably Tranquillo Barnetta, who shined back in the 10 spot.

With Mo Edu and Brian Carroll out injured, he might have to play a little more conservatively until one of them returns.

I have to think he'd play 90 minutes every game there.
At CB, he is either going to play 90 or 0.

It is a tough position to get minutes as a young player because it is the second least subbed spot on the field after keeper.

Getting a good run in the Championship is perfect for him at his stage IMO, even if JK treats these players like they have mono.  JK will likely be gone by the time Miazga matures into a possible USMNT regular anyway.

That being said, if the following is true as well... 0 is more likely :(

Looks like the "international CB" is Pontuss Jansson who plays for Torino and has 8 caps for Sweden.

The thing with Miazga is that he isn't someone like Green or Pulisic.  We've seen him play an entire MLS season and be one of the 3 or 4 best CBs in the league at 19.  If one of the few guys who was better than him that season (Ciman) can play for Belgium in the Euros, I'm pretty confident in Miazga progressing into a guy who can help the Nats, whether at Chelsea or elsewhere.

Chelsea has also been very good at finding good loan spots for their players, so I'm not too concerned with him getting buried.  They're not pulling a Green and loaning him out to a top league side in a relegation battle (which is the worst possible spot for a young player).

Gooch is eligible to play for the US, England and Ireland.

While England is obviously no worry, if Gooch can sustain time in the EPL, the Irish are almost certainly going to start asking some questions some time this year.

along with Gooch, here's the rest of the guys in england- per YA:

Cameron injured? still resting from Copa? Lichaj?

gotta say I'm excited to have a merican on s####horpe.

Geoff Cameron watched from the bench, while Brad Guzan did not dress as Stoke City and Middlesbrough settled for a 1-1 tie.

Cameron Carter-Vickers watched from the bench as Tottenham settled for the 1-1 tie with Everton.

Gedion Zelalem did not dress as Arsenal lost a 4-3 thriller to Liverpool.

Emerson Hyndman was out injured as Bournemouth fell to Manchester United 3-1.

Danny Williams started, but Reading would fall 2-0 to Wolves.

Jonathan Spector started as Birmingham City earned a 2-1 win over Leeds United.

Tim Ream came on in the 90th minute in Fulham's 2-1 win over Preston North End.

Eric Lichaj did not dress at Nottingham Forest earned a 3-0 win over Brighton.

James Murphy did not dress as Sheffield Wednesday's game against Norwich City ended 0-0.

Gboly Ariyibi started and got an assist in Chesterfield's 3-1 win over Swindon Town.

Duane Holmes started and played 58 minutes as S####horpe United settled for a 2-2 tie with Fleetwood Town.

DeAndre Yedlin linked with a move to Turkish club #Trabzonspor, the same club that just got Fabian Castillo. #USMNT

School me on how this works.  Does he have to approve the move?
for the most part, yes.   Obviously teams can put a decent amount of pressure on the player by simply telling him they have no plans for him in their future and if he wishes to rot in the reserves, he can.

Generally, two teams must agree on a fee and then the player has to agree on a new contract with the new team.
