Busio draws a PK. Sporting converts.

He made a trailing run and was in position to draw the foul. Not much else at this point.

Busio subbed out in the 77th minute. Just some quick thoughts:

1. Looked to me like Vermes tried to protect him in the first half, as most of the play went to the other side. He did draw the PK.

2. He dropped back some and played more in the center of the field in the second half. More of the action went through him or his side at times. Not heavy, but it was clear to me that Vermes wanted to see him in the middle of the action.

3. He hustled the whole game. I would argue that he showed the most fire of any of the Sporting players.

4. He had some rough touches here and there, but he just looks so calm on the ball and with his decision making. Just needed to be more precise with his passing at times.

5. He made some runs that Sporting did not reward him for. He made a great run on his last play of the day but couldn’t bring the ball down in front of the goal to get a shot off.

Summation:

I believe that Vermes loves this kid. But he is still 16. But I haven’t changed my opinion one bit - I think he is the best complete midfielder on their roster. He knows where the ball should go, and he tracked back and hustled to break up some plays on defense as well. He has some room to grow obviously, but at this point I would rather see him in there more and more moving forward.

I think he can be a great facilitator in the midfield on the attacking end.

He did an awesome job getting Trusty turned around on that run. If his foot was one shoe size larger he would’ve gotten that toe poke past Blake who totally whiffed on the stop.

Side note: kudos to Trusty for not giving up on that play and clearing it out on a last ditch tackle.

he is one of 4 players nominated for Player of the Week.  That's how you take an opportunity.  Force the coach to play you.

The Scandinavian clubs are releasing names for the upcoming U23 and U20 camps.  So far we have:

Erik Palmer Brown and Emmanuel Sabbi for the U23's

Jonathan Amon and Christian Cappis for the U20's

from sb nation... (really hoping a guy named maurice makes the cut... and hopefully rennicks improves- I really didn't like what I saw during wcq from him)

The United States men’s national team roster for this month’s friendlies against Ecuador and Chile is set to be released on Tuesday, so this was one last opportunity to make a case for inclusion. Many young American players are featuring quite a bit in recent weeks and hope to be on that list. I will continue with the rating system of who I believe is ready for a call-up right now (1 - nowhere near ready; 5 - absolutely call him up). Here’s what’s happening:

Germany

Timothy Tillman - Attacking Midfielder, Bayern Munich (On Loan at FC Nürnberg)

Tillman was a surprise inclusion in the matchday squad for Nurnberg on Sunday. The 20-year-old German-American hadn’t even appeared in a matchday squad since the second game of the season while featuring regularly for their second team. In the 52nd minute, Tillman made his Bundesliga debut when he came on with Hoffenheim leading 1-0. Nürnberg tied the score a few minutes after coming on, but Hoffenheim would eventually win it pretty late. Tillman didn’t see a ton of the ball after getting on the field, but he was very good when he did have it. Tillman beat Hoffenheim defenders multiple times and they resorted to fouling him on most occasions. He showed glimpses of his pace and also was calm and made smart decisions with the ball. I’m not sure how many opportunities he’ll have with Nürnberg staring relegation in the face, but he took his chance well this weekend. Tillman would still have to file a one-time switch to play for the U.S., but I wouldn’t say that his chances with Germany are high at this point with a loan spell that has included one first team appearance so far. Regardless, it’s a good sign that they’re giving him a look at this point. Hopefully he will see more. Rating: 2

Christian Pulisic - Attacking Midfielder, Chelsea (On Loan at Borussia Dortmund)

Borussia Dortmund needed a major comeback to erase the 3-0 aggregate deficit against Tottenham on Tuesday. Despite dominating the first half, Dortmund were unable to find a goal, and Harry Kane basically ended all hope a few minutes after halftime. Pulisic then made his return from injury in the 62nd minute with Dortmund needing a miracle. Pulisic missed a completely free header for a consolation goal, but the tie was already decided regardless. Dortmund were eliminated from the Champions League. On Saturday, Pulisic again found himself on the bench. In the 78th minute, he came off the bench with Dortmund level with Stuttgart at 1-1. Pulisic made a big impact when he somewhat fortunately picked up an assist on the go-ahead goal just 5 minutes later. Then in stoppage time, Pulisic finished off a nice attacking move by slotting a left-footed shot past the keeper to make it 3-1.

This was Pulisic’s second goal in the Bundesliga this season and his first league goal since September 22nd. This was a huge win to keep pace with Bayern Munich for first place in the Bundesliga. The 20-year-old seems to be regaining some form. Rating: 5

Weston McKennie - Central Midfielder, Schalke 04

McKennie returned from injury and started right away on Friday for free-falling Schalke. In the 26th minute, McKennie flicked on a header in the attacking half that Breel Embolo finished well to put Schalke in front.

This was McKennie’s fourth league assist this season. Unfortunately, Schalke weren’t able to hang on as Werder Bremen would strike back moments later. In the second half, Bremen would seize control and strike twice more. A late second goal for Embolo put the pressure back on Bremen, but they would put it away in stoppage time. Despite a much better performance, Schalke came away with nothing again and find themselves just four points clear of the relegation playoff spot. To make matters worse, they have to go to England on Tuesday for the second leg in the Champions League against Manchester City. Then next Saturday, they host Tyler Adams and third-place RB Leipzig. For McKennie, he was his usual dominant self in the air, but he saw very little of the ball on the ground and didn’t look particularly good when he did have it. They need more from him (and a lot more from the rest of his teammates for that matter) if they’re going to turn this season around. Rating: 5

Maurice Malone - Striker, Augsburg

Malone is inching closer to a first team breakthrough. On Saturday, the 18-year-old German-American made the matchday squad for the first time in Augsburg’s 0-0 draw against RB Leipzig. Augsburg currently sit three points clear of the relegation playoff spot and could use all the goals they can get down the stretch. Malone has had an excellent season at the U-19 level and may get the opportunity to help Augsburg’s attack down the stretch. Malone would have to file a one-time switch to play for the US, but he’s one to keep an eye on going forward. Rating: 2

England

Antonee Robinson - Left Back, Everton FC (On Loan at Wigan Athletic)

On Saturday, Robinson returned to the starting lineup this week following a three and a half month stretch out with injury. The 21-year-old struggled in his return as Reading would win 3-2. His passing was erratic and he looked a bit rusty defensively as well. It’s great to see him back in the team though. Let’s hope for a clean bill of health and continued opportunities before his loan runs out at the end of the season. Rating: 3

Charlie Kelman - Striker, Southend United

Kelman had a big moment on Saturday when the 17-year-old earned his first career League One start for Southend. Kelman had played sparingly, making occasional appearances for the first team since his debut. But he’s been pushing for more and it finally came this weekend. Kelman was subbed out after 73 minutes and Southend leading 2-1 (they wound up drawing 2-2). This young man is being scouted by some major clubs and could be an option for Tab Ramos at the U-20 World Cup this summer depending on who else gets released. Rating: 2

United States

Paxton Pomykal - Attacking Midfielder, FC Dallas

After coming off the bench last week, Pomykal got the start on Saturday for FC Dallas against the LA Galaxy. The 19-year-old was the best player on the field and delivered a Man of the Match performance with his dangerous dribbling and incisive playmaking. In the 62nd minute, Pomykal attacked the endline and delivered a lovely cutback to the top of the box that was ripped home for his first career MLS assist.

FC Dallas has four points from its first two matches of the season despite a major effort to play their youth (on top of Pomykal and Reggie Cannon starting, 18-year-old Edwin Cerrillo also made his professional debut in this match). It’s impressive that they’re willing to trust their young players and their young players are delivering. Look for Pomykal to be a major part of the U-20 World Cup team, assuming he gets released. Rating: 3

Justin Rennicks - Striker, New England Revolution

On Saturday, Rennicks was on the bench for the second consecutive match to start the season. With New England down 1-0, the 19-year-old came on for Juan Agudelo at halftime to make his professional debut and try to create a spark in their attack. Rennicks tried to create but was unable to generate enough danger as Gyasi Zardes would add another in stoppage time. Hopefully Rennicks can stay in the picture and keep pushing for more opportunities this season. Rating: 2

Kai Koreniuk - Winger, LA Galaxy

Koreniuk has left AZ Alkmaar to join the LA Galaxy. The 21-year-old had struggled for playing time with Jong AZ in the second division in Holland after moving from Vitesse. On Saturday, Koreniuk made his debut for LA Galaxy II, coming off the bench in the 60th minute in their 4-1 loss to Switchback FC. Let’s hope he can resurrect his career in Los Angeles. Rating: 1

not the world's biggest scoop here but posting any way

====================

ORLANDO, Fla. — U.S. men’s national team star Christian Pulisic will be part of the roster called up for a friendly against Ecuador at Orlando City Stadium, a source confirmed to Pro Soccer USA.

The match, which will be played at 8 p.m. on March 21, will be new USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter’s third at the helm. It’ll be the first time he has access to the entire U.S. player pool because the match falls during a FIFA international window.

The full roster will be announced on Tuesday.

I didn't notice that. From the comment in the twitter thread, it seems those signify the Women winning 3 world cups?  Can that be true?
it is the only thing they can represent imo.

The only official competition the US Men have won is the Gold Cup and that number is 6.
Have to assume they're going all in on the one nation/one team theme.

I think I'd be a little more 'upset' if they decided to put it above the crest for the men:shrug:

I don't understand the red card schtik here and the other times this clip has been posted.
Somebody mentioned a player getting a red for doing a rabona. I extrapolated the red to any play that's not boring. But mainly, the schtick seems to be playing that clip over and over.

U.S. Roster by Position (Club; Caps/Goals):

GOALKEEPERS (3): Ethan Horvath (Club Brugge, BEL; 3/0), Sean Johnson (New York City FC; 6/0), Zack Steffen (Columbus Crew SC; 8/0)

FORWARDS (6): Paul Arriola (D.C. United; 19/3), Corey Baird (Real Salt Lake; 2/0), Jonathan Lewis (New York City FC; 2/0), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders FC; 25/5), Christian Ramirez (LAFC; 2/1), Gyasi Zardes (Columbus Crew SC; 42/6)

wow, lots and lots of surprises for me.

* The roster is MUCH older than I expected

* Omar makes no sense

* The forwards, oh my god that is awful

* No Sargent and no Weah seems to indicate they are going to be on the U20 or U23 roster

* Very bummed Duane Holmes did not get called.

* Shocked that Ream and Gonzo got called over CCV (unless he is being ear marked for the U23 team)

* With so many central midfielders on the roster, I wonder if we will see the Tyler Adams at false RB role?

I like the keeper group

The midfield I would have swapped Roldan for Holmes but the rest is fine as long as Bradley does not take too many minutes

We still have no LB.  Lovitz did nothing at camp cup cake that made me think he should get called again.

Berhalter explaining his choices in an interview

Upon naming his 24-player roster for the U.S. Men’s National Team’s March friendlies against Ecuador and Chile, head coach Gregg Berhalter sat down with ussoccer.com to discuss his decisions in the team’s last camp before the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.

ussoccer.com: What were the considerations in putting together the March roster?

Gregg Berhalter: “We wanted to continue to develop our group and continue to evaluate players. That was the most important thing in this March camp. As we move towards the Gold Cup, we want to have a large pool of players evaluated.”

ussoccer.com: What are the main objectives of this camp?

GB: “Our goal is to keep making progress. Building on the themes of last camp, building on the style of play of last camp, but also now evaluating a new group of players. We made progress in the first camp and it’s now asking if we can take it to another level. When we are done with this camp, it’s important that we have a good idea of our strongest group of players heading into the Gold Cup.”

ussoccer.com: What have you and your staff done between camps to help get players up to speed?

GB: “We have laid a lot of ground work in preparation for this camp. It entailed meeting with the players, video conferences with the players, conversations with the players, evaluating their games … it’s a very important time period to keep working and be productive. We’ve used that time to meet the players and communicate what we’re looking to do in the next camp.”

ussoccer.com: You’ve brought 14 players from January Camp back for these games. What role did the short week have in that decision?

GB: “That was one of the reasons. We thought it was important to tie some of the themes of last camp into this next camp and to have some consistency in the personnel made a lot of sense. Again, we still think we’re able to evaluate a new group of players, and we think that is going to be valuable as we move into the Gold Cup.”

ussoccer.com: Omar Gonzalez and Tim Ream return to the squad for the first time since 2017. Why did you feel now was the right time for the two veteran defenders to come back into the fold?

GB: “We have been saying all along that we thought it was important to have a veteran presence in the National Team. I think it’s really important when you talk about the history, the heritage and culture of what it means to play for the National Team. In Omar and Tim’s case, they’re both playing at a high level, they’re both playing every week and we thought this would be a good camp to evaluate their performance.”

ussoccer.com: After a year away recovering from an ACL injury, Jordan Morris is also back in camp. Could you speak about the road the 24-year-old has taken to get back on the field for Seattle Sounders FC and the MNT?

GB: “On the club stage is when you have small victories, when you see guys returning after long-term injury. On the National Team, it’s equally as gratifying to be able to call a player up after he has had a good preseason and a great start to this season. We’re excited for Jordan. He’s a player that we had contact with in January Camp and it will be great to see him live and in person on the field.”

ussoccer.com: While some players are returning, you also had to make some decisions on those that won’t join the team this camp. Could you talk about the difficulty and the thought process that went into it?

GB: “We had to make decisions for this camp and we looked at the players in a number of different buckets. For example, we have some younger guys that aren’t getting the game time that they would have expected and they’re still age-eligible for the Olympics, so we think it’s a great opportunity for them to play two international games with the U-23 team. We have other players that we have evaluated thoroughly in the January Camp and we’re going to bring back in the future, but not in this camp. That’s another group. Then we have some guys that are returning from injury and we thought now is not the right time to subject them to the intensity of international soccer and the National Team.

“Having to select a 23 or 24-man roster for a camp isn’t easy. All it does is reflect a slice of time. I’ve had a lot of conversations with players not included in the camp and the message is ‘Keep working hard. Keep playing. Keep trying to get on the field for your club and good things will happen.’ Overall, it’s not an easy decision and we were focused on how we get a strong group for this camp, knowing we have a short window and we wanted continuity.”

ussoccer.com: What do you expect from Ecuador and Chile?

GB: “We have been watching a lot of film on both those teams. They are very good, athletic and skillful teams. Chile has a very good high press which is going to be great for our group. Ecuador is very athletic and has a top group of players that are excellent. In the back, they’re very strong in the tackle and also have some man orientation to them that will make it interesting against us. Overall, we think they’re great challenges.”

ussoccer.com: What about playing in Orlando and Houston are you looking forward to?

GB: “Orlando is a special atmosphere. I was just over in Germany at Dortmund and you see the wall behind the goal. Orlando has the mini wall, which is great. It produces an amazing atmosphere in the stadium, so we’re hoping to have a packed stadium, have really good speed in our game and play attractive soccer.”

“I was in Houston last week as well where they had a really great crowd at midweek for their Champions League game. It’s another great soccer stadium. I think when the stadium is filled up, it will be a great atmosphere to play against a tough South American opponent.”

if forced to make a lineup based entirely on the rosters grouping of players, I will offer this mess(I only feel good about 4 of the players in this lineup which scares the hell out of me considering we expected our first look at a first choice lineup)

......................Steffen

..Yedlin....Miazga......Brooks......Ream

..........................Adams

.................Weston......Pulisic

Arriola...........Zardes............Morris

Berhalter press conference comments:

Says need for continuity with January camp was a priority: "with this short preparation window we feel that it's important to have some consistency in what we're doing"

Regarding Ream and Gonzalez: "it is common for CBs, central midfielders, goalkeepers, to be older and perform at high levels...I value veteran leadership, I value the culture of what it means to play for the NT, and I think it's important to have guys that have been through it"

"It's still too early" to tell what the Gold Cup roster will be like"

On Sargent and Weah: "deciding on the final 24 players for this roster wasn't easy...when we looked at players that were U23 eligible that weren't necessarily going to be in our starting group, we had to weigh" whether it's better for them to gain experience in U23 matches

Going to trust him on this one from a long term growth perspective, but :kicksrock:

it's a rock kick because our forwards are so friggan bad on this roster.

With Jozy hurt and Wood's form dropping off a cliff, we are stuck looking at two 19 year olds who are not even starters as pros yet as our saviors.

Thank god qualifying is still a ways off.
