Caleb Wiley didn't get released by ATL. He'd be a sure fire starter (without Paredes/Gomez). Instead our best option is to play Cuevas there out of position.

So the only reason LB is so bad is that our top 3 in this age group didn't accept the call up.

Oh yeah, for sure. I was specifically referring to the midfield but our likely U20 WC roster has some big guns not in this side.

Add Malick Sonogo (Union Berlin) as well

It's a long way off to make a roster, but we have a lot of talent not in Honduras

Ok...that explains everything. Had no idea Cuevas was out of position. I'd posted that he has moments of looking great, but then so consistently got beat down his side by poor defending...taking the wrong line, choosing the wrong time to jump in, etc. I should've realized he wasn't a FB.

He's a fullback but he's really a right back. It's why he whiffed on that cross because he was trying to shape his run to hit it on his right when it was far less difficult if he went left. 

All the things you point out make me think he's not that great in general but he is apparently our best option in this group. 

 
One side note to the players who were not released was that we had an almost entire MLS team in qualification and they looked good enough to give us further confidence that the academies are doing exactly what we hoped.

I was reading up on him today.  He played for LA Galaxy 2 but was released last season.  That typically indicates a player has failed in his development when released from a USL team so young, but I noticed that wiki says he was signed by Club Brugge which is not a small team, so maybe he asked for his release from LA?  I can't find any useful info.

I knew very little about the coach Varas before the tournament started outside of the fact that he was an FC Dallas assistant coach.  I have to give him at least a little credit for the performance.

He had very little prep time and game time with the team and seems to have formed a decent squad even if missing a bunch of players he may have chosen if available.  And he didn't even rely on players he knew from FC Dallas as I think there is only one player on the squad from Dallas and that is the back up keeper.

 
Speaking of coaches, it is time to bring up GGG and whether he should/will be rehired for a 2026 run.

I personally did not see enough growth in the team over qualifying to make me think he should be rehired.  Note that I have a bias that I don't like 2 cycle coaches to begin with so this may be clouding my judgement.

The only thing that would change my mind would be a VERY strong run at the WC.   Maybe something like no less than 6 points in the group, a clean win in the round of 16 and being competitive* in the quarterfinals.

*By competitive, I mean like in 2002 against Germany and not like against Belgium in 2014.  I am not going specifically on just score line when I say competitive.

Sevilla, too.

It’s early in the window but it seems like Leeds is getting weaker, not stronger so far. I’m concerned about relegation for them especially because Forest seem like they want to stay. Don’t know enough about Sevilla. I can see Adams getting some time at Everton, though.

Tyler Adams to Leeds is progressing fast. Leeds have explored loan with option to buy & a permanent deal. Xavier Schlager’s arrival at Leipzig suddenly means Adams’ fee will be £10-12 million hence why Leeds may buy outright. Adams really wants the move and has spoken to Marsch

Tsakiris is interesting. I really don't know much about him other than he's a 2005 (he just turned 17) and apparently has gotten a few games for San Jose. That 2 year difference at this age is just massive but he doesn't look out of place. 

Also interesting to see Alvarado playing the 6

ooooh.... some really nice interchange there, and Tsakiris just not getting his volley shot down after a great run, first touch off his chest (from Paxton on the scoop). would've been a highlight reel goal.

 
what's interesting- Mikey has rotated the lineup a lot throughout the tournament, including here. there are some clear and obvious stars for the team- Paxton, McGlynn, Luna, Sullivan... but every rotation has done the job and played consistently and well, whether the "top" players are there or not.

oh wow... that build up just now in the 25th was gorgeous. the DR GK has been doing a good job holding on to things... deserved a goal there.

 
I know I sound negative sometimes, so it makes me happy to say this team has got a BUNCH of ballers.

Bet more than a couple of these guys make noise at the next level.  Good skill and great use of space.  Really enjoying the last couple games.

great call. he's the lubricant in that MF.

I mean, there are guys who are clearly not at the same level as the top guys, but as a team they have been so consistent and Cuevas aside, pretty free from mistakes. great work-rate, great shape, great ability to combine through the middle or go wide, and ok finishing (considering how many opportunities they create, the goal scoring should be higher). they're seeing, trying ad playing things in combinations and getting numbers forward without giving up much of anything in the back.

oh- I had missed that it was Cuevas on the sweet double cutback and cross on the wing that set up the third. he can do that stuff, and then just disintegrate defending a pass or dribble or picking the wrong angle.

I don't know where most of these DR players play, but it was always a big ask for a small team like this to make a deep run in a tournamemt- just from a fitness standpoint, let alone ability standpoint. I've been impressed watching them, but the wheels just fell off here.

Now the US needs to keep the bagel on the board.

They've played over their heads to get here but even still, they started a b-team today. They put everything into the semi

This feels like the most dominant one of the three.  Even the draw against Canada was complete dominance.

With 6 teams qualifying from Concacaf in the future, this is probably an example of how we should expect WC2030 qualifying to be like.   I don't think this is a good thing in the long haul though.  We will need more competition than what Concacaf can supply with 6 teams qualifying.

Interesting discussion about U20 WC roster but are there any guys that are age eligible (Gio is not no matter how many times Edu says so) that are with the seniors? Pepi is the only one I can think of.

You have to be 2003.  I don't think anyone on this roster is on the verge even. We'll have a Gold Cup next summer so my guess is the fringe older players go there and all the U20 play in the WC.
