US Men's National Team (15 Viewers)

4 Concacaf countries qualified for the Qatar WC

4 Concacaf countries qualified for the U20 WC

The US is the only Concacaf team in both tournaments

Watching a bit of this Mex team earlier and then last night, felt like there was nothing scary about the team. Capable of steam rolling minnows while also giving up clear opportunities to them and then playing tight with even somewhat better opposition like Haiti and Guat. Surprised by their lack of shape and inability to consistently move the ball around- lots of punts and miscues out of the press, and even when not pressed.

But while nothing scary about the team, there are some scary players on it. so I don't think much changes for the senior team- they'll continue to have a good pipeline. That said, as a team, they seemed to rely on individual players to make things happen. That Johnny Perez kid was filthy, but also stupid- consistently slowing the ball down to set up the 1st defender, and dribbling into the 2nd and 3rd defender (who had time to cover with him slowing it down) instead of giving the ball off.

I'm curious what it means to that pipeline to have no Olympics this far out. Could it swing a young dual nat? (Assuming we get by Hondurus)

I think the 01s are age eligible for the Olympics (Gio, Musah, Bello, Scally, Tillman, Busio, Bassett, Johnny, Tessmann, Pepi, Hoppe, Konrad all have Senior caps right now). That's a legit shot at a medal when you add them to the U20 roster, the ones left out for club reasons (Che, Paredes, Slonina, etc), and then get 3 over age players. And of course, age them all 2 years.

Re: arm/handling rule....

New ruling came out to specify the armpit is the point at which handling starts.

A couple of years ago it changed to clarify that if the arm is in a natural position that handling should not be called.  Referee's discretion of "natural position".

I've argued quite a few over the last couple of years and have been told their directives behind the scenes are to not call it if it looks like natural flow of play.

The example I was given was say a defender slides (think superman pose, one arm in and one outstretched)  if ball hits the outstretched hand - handling.  If it hits the tucked in arm - not handling

As much as I was on the train that the US not making the Olympics was bad and many here thought missing the last WC would be bad, if our pipeline was impacted you would be hard pressed to show that.

I'm still in the boat that getting the guys above together with Pulisic, McKennie, and Adams/Weah on the team for an Olympic run would be a huge boost for USA soccer.  Personally I think there's a legit shot at gold.

Will be interesting to see how this affects MEX-US dual nats:

Mexico will miss next year's U-20 World Cup. Jonathan Gómez (left), Erik Dueñas, and Fernando Álvarez's only chance to play there will be to represent the US. The same is true for Tony Leone (right), Jonny Pérez. and Christian Torres, who would need to file one-time switches.

My guess is the US will prioritize Copa America in 2024 and then give the main players the rest of the summer off and the Olympic team may not have any overlap in roster.

Assuming of course we qualify for Olympics and get invited to Copa.

USMNT striker Jordan Pefok has officially completed his transfer to Union Berlin. They finished 5th in the Bundesliga last year, qualifying for the Europa League. Pefok, 26, won the Swiss League Golden Boot with BSC Young Boys last year.

Seems pretty ideal. If he can't do it at the higher level, we'll know it was just Swiss league nonsense. If he produces a little bit, he puts himself right back in position to MAYBE make the team (Especially with the expanded roster).

Just scary that we're like 5 months from the tournament and have so many question marks at striker. Jesus is almost a certainty now if he's healthy but other than that...we just have no idea.  Seems like there's like a half-dozen guys potentially in the mix.

Agreed.  on the positive side I think we just need 1 to come through.  Even with 26 players, I bet GGG may only take two strikers.  We have so many other players who could likely also play in that role in one form or another.

This feels more real than normal silly season stuff, especially given Chelsea looking at multiple wingers.

===========

Chelsea have resumed talks with Juventus over a potential swap deal involving Christian Pulisic plus cash for Matthijs de Ligt.

Juventus would prioritise a deal for the USA captain ahead of Chelsea striker Timo Werner who has also been discussed.

Thomas Tuchel is set to be backed heavily in the summer transfer market by new owner Todd Boehly, and he has made bringing in a new defender his priority

Pulisic's contract is up next summer.  So if Chelsea want to get anything back, a deal like the above may make some sense.

The parts that don't add up are that the numbers seems to indicate that Pulisic is valued around 25-30m in a deal like this.  Juventus are said to be wanting ~55m in cash along with Pulisic.

Now we all know Chelsea won't get back anything close to what they spent on Pulisic but if Aaronson just set the American winger market at 30m, Pulisic has to be worth a little more, even to a non EPL team.

If Pulisic does move, I am anticipating him signing a 4 year deal.  I believe pieces are being put in place for an MLS team to back up a Brinks truck in unison with WC2026 for Pulisic and if he moves on a free, the sky will be the limit on his salary.   By 2026, he will be in the middle of his prime, been in Europe for over a decade in likely three different countries and may be ready to come home.

Just my long shot speculation...

The local TV production team has done a terrible job with replays, so im not really sure about the play in question against Guat...but to my eyes live and one quick replay, it looked like the defender had both arms at sides...and the shot came from in close and fast. Until I see a replay that shows something else, never a handball.

There was only about a 2-3 month gap between not qualifying and the Olympics themselves and so Mexico's Olympic side was largely already set. And even still, two members of our failed qualifying side quickly switched to Mexico (Araujo and Ochoa).

In this case it's going to be 2-years and our team is anything but already selected.

Good point. Weren't they talking about another 16-team Copa field in 2024 like Copa Centenario with the US hosting again? I seem to remember that but maybe it was just someone spit-balling.

I think anything and everything will be on the table.

Qatar did an incredible job this cycle in getting involved in extra games.  They played in Gold Cup, they were invited to Copa America (but had to miss due to Covid) and got themselves into a UEFA WC qualifying group.

I hope the US tries to be just as creative.  A Gold Cup or 2 won't be any where enough prep for a team coming into its prime during the next cycle.

With likely a significant amount of our core players in Europe during the next cycle, joining a UEFA qualifying group would be very nice (even if the games would just be glorified friendlies, the other teams will still have their top players available).

This is good trivia

When was the last time BOTH the USA & Mexico qualified for the Olympics?

Not 2024, 2020, 2016, 2012, 2008, 2004, 2000, US hosted 1996.

1992 was the last time....

United States U-20 standout Cade Cowell has been suspended for three matches for his role in the brawl following USA's 2-0 win over Costa Rica to qualify for the U20 World Cup. Cowell will miss semis vs. Honduras tomorrow, where the winner qualifies for the Olympics.

2 CR players suspended six games, 7 CR players suspended three matches. CR federation fined an undisclosed amount

I'll give the US players a lot of credit here for keeping their heads more or less.  We could have lost half our team like CR did if they'd been sucked into this melee.

Also, credit to CONCACAF for getting it mostly right.  Figured they'd look at who was getting kicked and who was doing the kicking and no-harm, no-foul things.

they must have had better camera angles than we saw as well because the TV version made it really hard to see what was happening...

Is he suspended for Indonesia then?

Is he suspended for Indonesia then?

I am very confused by the wording.  If we beat Honduras, he can serve two of the 3 games right now.  But I don't understand when the 3rd game gets served.

The wording " If the suspensions cannot be served in the same age category" confuses me.   Does that maybe mean if the player ages out before he can serve suspension....?

If that is true, I assume he is going to be suspended for the first game in Indonesia since he won't age out before the WC next summer.

Sciaretta says Cowell's suspension will carry over to next summer.  Whether it is one or two games next summer depends on if the US wins tomorrow and makes the final.

oh that is lovely.  Calm too considering the circumstances (last minute winner, age, first pro goal).  Very cool to see.

I just looked him up on wiki.  They must be high on this kid.  He started in USL at 14!  And then got 19 games at USL at 15.   Great to see home grown (and home born!) coming through.
I watched the game live (tv)...kid has been in their system for a long time.

RBs subbed in a couple attacking players. Including the kid, who paid immediate dividends even before the goal- better shaped runs and attacking guys with the ball. Even though I thought ATL were the slightly better side for much of the earlier part of the game, the tide visibly turned when he and the other sub(s) came in.

The explosiveness and quickness to get to that ball first- the whole stadium was surprised, especially that defender. And yeah- super confident approach and finish.

Tip o' the iceberg, gents!

Put them on the USMNT and they launch them into the parking deck*.

Inside joke...son's college team had a parking deck behind the goal and literally put more shots over the fence and road into the parking deck than the back of the net.  One kid played 4 years on wing and had zero goals.  His second to last game from three feet out with an open goal he put it over the cross bar.

RB Leipzig open to loaning Tyler with Leeds interested, per the Athletic. They say it could ensure more consistent playing time with Adams’ role being threatened by the arrival of Xavier Schlager.

Leeds giving Fulham a run for their money to become our 51st state.

ETA: Jozy too.

ETA2:  what was Brian McBride doing on an Olympic team at 36 years old?

You are allowed 3 overage players....Pulisic, McKennie, Weah/Adams = Gold

Got to win tonight first.
