Thoughts on Luis Enrique as USMNT coach? He's available now...
I think the best Luis Enrique Barcelona team might have been better than the best Pep Barcelona team, but has he ever had less than an extremely talented team? I mean, Spain kind or underperformed in this tournament and had trouble scoring goals consistently. And it's not as if we need to thump Costa Rica this cycle.

Juventus are reportedly open to letting Weston McKennie leave for €30m in January, with several clubs interested in the USMNT international, including Chelsea and Manchester United.

McKennie is not a regular starter at the Allianz Stadium and according to Calciomercato.com, the Bianconeri will listen to offers for him in the January transfer window.

The Old Lady value the former Schalke 04 midfielder at €30m but could agree to sell also for a lower fee.

According to the report, McKennie’s representatives have spoken to Borussia Dortmund and some Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa.

Chelsea are also said to be in the running as new owners want to bring in more American players. Tottenham and Manchester United negotiated a potential deal for the 24-year-old last summer and are still monitoring the Juventus midfielder.

McKennie joined Juventus from Schalke on an initial loan deal with an option to buy for €18m in 2020. Fabio Paratici, now at Tottenham, completed the transfer.

The midfielder’s contract in Turin expires in June 2025.

Every available player gets linked with Manchester United at some point. Heck Snejder is probably still linked with a move. It's amazing.
(Not saying its false, I don't know, just take it with a grain of salt)

DS on Sarge: "We're still monitoring him. He's got a little bit of swelling still so it'll be touch and go whether he's ready or not."

Paul Tenerioand Sam Sjejskal have a pretty extensive story out…minor part is interest in Pep, so there’s the first of what I’m guessing will be many big name foreign coach.

Grant Wahl, RIP. What the heck?

Yeah. Holy crap.

Lots of twitter speculation(and apparently his brother flat out came out and said it) that this was NOT an accident after the whole deal with him wearing the pride shirt into the stadium the other day.
Pretty irresponsible speculation. The guy's been battling what he thought was bronchitis. Even went to the hospital earlier this week. Good chance it was something more serious that was missed.

I feel for his family, including his brother. I understand his grief and anger, especially since Grant was a healthy 48 year old. Pretty reckless to cry foul play before even getting reports from people on scene.(Although I suppose that's pretty much the point of twitter/TikTok)

I will say that I'm going to miss Grant Wahl as a US soccer fan. Nearly everyone who knew him agrees that he was a genuinely good person. He was also an excellent soccer liaison and reporter. I'm going to miss his articles and his insight. RIP.

One of the many problems with social media is people can unfortunately react quickly without taking the time to process what happened. His brother is in tremendous grief and he knew that Grant had many death threats while over there. Getting that news and quickly going to the worst case scenario may be reckless but understandable.

Unfortunately even if it comes out that Grant died due to an unknown medical condition the conspiracy theorists will never put that cat back in the bag.

So it took what, 100 years for that to get to the semi-finals, just once?

We finally have the players to play the game straight up. We fell asleep at the wheel on a few defensive get-backs against a Netherlands team that looked every bit as good as Argentina. We smashed a current WC semi-finalist. And we played basically dead even (beat them on XG) with England who had France on their back heels all game long and looked like the best team in the tournament over the weekend.

And that was our "it's too soon for these guys to compete" team.

It would be a shame to waste the closest thing we've ever had to a dominant midfield on asking them to play like Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley.

I think you've created a couple straw men here. If we learned anything its that you can't go deep in this tournament if your fullbacks have each run a full marathon through the first 3 games and neither is defensively oriented. For me, the team definitely could use a little pragmatism and focus on how we really expect to win games. A team like the US can't afford to be absolute crap on set pieces and have question marks across the back line. And I think Jermaine Jones would be a great addition to this group.

Normally I wouldn't post stuff from a lower league like that, but a Roberto Carlos-like free kick that starts completely outside the wall and curves hard just inside the post is pretty much universal.

Oh boy. I think there's more context to this -- it came up in a broader discussion -- but who do you think Berhalter is talking about here? A player at the World Cup had to apologize to the team and explain why, and got called out one by one by the team's leadership.

Is this about Reyna? McKennie? A role player?

The part that stands out he mentions they weren't meeting expectations on the field either, which I think rules out those two since Weston played well and Gio was never on the field to try and meet expectations there.

So Shaq Moore or Haji Wright, maybe?

I think this is kinda ****ty of Berhalter. I understand it's easy to do but it unnecessarily leads to speculation like this.

And eventually someone will share this because now players will get asked about this and it will create bad blood.

The "on the field" comment is what is throwing me for a loop too....It seemed tailored made for Gio until I saw that.

I am with @prefontaine here, there is no reason to have brought this up. If anything US Soccer needs to pay attention to things like this when they make their decision soon.

unless on the field means something like training as well....then it really could be anybody...

I never pictured Luca as a malcontent and just assumed he did not play because he was hurt but could it be him?

My recollection is that people were fighting mad and calling for Berhalter's head because he wasn't starting Reyna and he didn't provide any info about why he wasn't starting Reyna. (I'm assuming it's Reyna)

Seems kinda "can't win" to me.

Feels like chicken and egg to me.

I had assumed Gio got pissed because he did not play against Wales but from what you said he would have to have been upset before the game...

I don't think it's chicken and egg even as you describe it. If Gio pitched a hissy fit because he didn't start against Wales, that's 100% on him. He's not divinely entitled to a spot and you can see what Berhalter was trying to do (keep MMA together in the midfield and have two speedy/wide wings). Even if you disagree with it, you can see it. And the team played well.

After Wales people were wondering and/or complaining for the rest of the tournament about Reyna not playing much. And now they're gonna complain that Berhalter reveals something about why? Really seems like an agenda-driven commentary to me.

Seems odd in contrast to how he handled the McKennie situation. One possible explanation is that he knows he’s not returning as coach.

Paul Tenorio@PaulTenorio

#USMNT winger Gio Reyna's lack of effort in training & scrimmage vs. Al-Gharafa contributed to role at World Cup, per sources.

Reyna eventually apologized to team. Gregg Berhalter comments via @charterworks seem to reference issues.

Gio is such a talented problem................

Of course almost every other top playing country has had a problem child who was also awesome at the sport, so hopefully this works out as well for us.

I know German Soccer is notoriously cut throat in terms of how the players treat each other.

But even acknowledging that I am surprised a vet hasn’t tried to scare Gio straight. I know talent always wins out which is why Gio keeps progressing but damn.

It sounds like Scally is his best friend but I doubt anything he would say would have any effect on Gio.

Sometimes when you are the best at every age group, different complexes can arise.

Just a lousy situation all around.

First off.....gio needs to grow up in a major way. Full stop.

But not sure what Greg's motivation is. If his goal is to stay on and wants to fight off the "he mismanaged gio" criticism....this obviously doesn't hurt.

But if this group is to reach their potential, gio needs to be a massive part of it. Can't just discard him.

Obviously he's not the first talented 20 year old to throw a fit when he doesn't get his way. But man is it disappointing that this father, a former USMNT freaking captain....hasn't been able to rein him in

The fact he aired it out now seems to suggest either he knew it would come out or he knows he’s not going to continue as coach.

I don't know why he said it, but I have to assume at the very least he certainly knew the article was coming out (I assume they reached out to him for quotes).
