US Men's National Team (8 Viewers)

Can someone explain to me the MLS and the various cups/tournaments involved with it? And how free agency/transfers work?
I'll let others step in with better info.

But... First rule of MLS- no "the". Its like MLB and not like NBA or NFL.

There's league play leading to playoffs. Team with the best record heading into the playoffs wins the Supporters Shield (this mirrors Europe). Then you can win MLS Cup by winning the playoffs... Like winning the Superbowl.

There's also the US Open Cup, which open to ALL teams in the US... Not just top divisions. That's a lose and you're out deal, but MLS teams jump in later rounds... They don't have to play Joe's Pub team from palooka, unless Joes advances a bunch of rounds.

There's a Champions League, where the winners of various US competitions play winners from different countries in our region. If you win that, you play in the FIFA club world cup against top teams from other regions.

They're currently playing a new joint MLS and Mex cup... That's the thing Messi is in now. No idea what's up with that.

Floppo covered the various competitions.

Free agency has been evolving in recent years. You currently need to be at least 24 years old AND have 5 years of service in the league to be deemed a free agent. The MLS PA recently just released a list of all upcoming free agents https://mlsplayers.org/news/2023-free-agent-list-release

Transfers work pretty much like they do across all leagues. There are deadlines, and windows. Because MLS has a soft salary cap, teams can't just take the money they make off a big transfer and directly plunge back it into the players (however there are many indirect ways to do this that get a little complicated).

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I can help. The MLS roster rules are about as clear as mud with how overly complicated they are.

It seems Chelsea could buy Adams, Caciedo and Lavia in the next week or two. Its probably mostly agent noise, but lots of smoke putting CFC in pole position for all three. It also seems like they may keep Andrey Santos on the roster, who also reportedly plays a DM/CM kind of role. They've lost 4-5 regular midfielders in the past 6 months so its not outrageous for them to add 4 this summer (Kante, Kova, RLC, Mount, Jorginho).

Connor Gallagher and Lewis Hall are both up in the air. Hall would be a loan, Gallagher a permanent move - or I guess both could stay.

Thanks guys. Helpful information. I played soccer back in HS and enjoy watching it, but never got into MLS and really never follow anything outside of World Cup.

I live in Philly though and my kids are starting to get into soccer now and we are heading to our first Union game in a couple of weeks — so I want to be able to adopt them as a team to cheer for together but want to understand what the heck is going on.

Subaru Park is a fantastic place to take in a game. Just know that getting in and out of the parking lots is a process. Bring some chairs and hang out for a bit after to let the crowds thin out.

Union have been one of the best teams in MLS for the last 4 seasons now. They have the best spine in the league with Andre Blake at GK, Jakob Glesnes/Jack Elliott at CB, and Jose Martinez at the 6.

I still contend that as great as the Eagles were last year, and as fun as that Phillies playoff run was, the Union was the best team in the city in 2022. ####ing Bale.

That is great. You guys should have a blast.

Who will they be playing against?

A report from RMC Sport has claimed that Monaco’s opening bid was worth €40million (£34m) - £16million lower than the Gunners' reported £50million asking price - but the Ligue 1 side intend to return with an improved offer. The report adds that the French outfit have made signing Balogun their priority and already have agreed personal terms with the Hale End graduate.

Even knowing there is a ton of player movement in soccer, the amount of first team USMNT players on the move is really incredible.

It is going to be another nail biting season hoping almost every one gets settled and gets playing time.

These are massive numbers from Monaco, especially with no Champions League in their near future.

I looked it up and their record signing is 45m Euros (for James Rodriguez). They may have to break their record for Balogun.

It's awkward when we all wanted him to get a bigger challenge than Reims, only to go to Monaco. I suppose Monaco is a bit stronger team but would not have any UEFA games for him. At the same time, I could never begrudge a player taking an opportunity to live in Monaco and play home games at the Stade Louis-II.

Understand Brighton want to resolve the Moisés Caicedo saga tonight.
#BHAFC have been clear: selling to the highest bidder.

Liverpool will challenge Chelsea and also send formal proposal bid to Brighton — official bids will be there.

Player position will be crucial too.

Please please please as a fan of both Liverpool and USMNT.

I love Adams, but if he turns out to be more than a Cup and cover player for Chelsea I'll be (pleasantly) surprised. Really hate this move for him.

Except the "getting paid millions to live in London in your 20s" thing. I bet that rocks.

BBC gossipy news... (the Caicedo to Pool instead of chels rumor again, but also a Verratti to chels rumor... all of which effect Adams- although Verratti is more of an attacking MF, no?)

Liverpool are now frontrunnersto sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo ahead of Chelsea and are willing to smash their club-record transfer fee to land the 21-year-old Ecuadorian. (Talksport)

Chelsea are interested in 30-year-old Italy midfielder Marco Verratti, who is not part of new PSG manager Luis Enrique's plans. (Foot Mercato - in French)

Inter Milan are unwilling to meet Arsenal's valuation for Folarin Balogun and have pulled out of talks over a deal for the 22-year-old American striker. (Calciomercato - In Italian)

oh boy talk radio here in Boston is going to be toxic to the nth degree if this deal becomes public tomorrow......Red Sox fans hate John Henry for being so cheap the way it is.... :lmao:

Liverpool fans went from cursing the protracted Lavia negotiations -- with the team bidding 41/45/46 MM for him -- to landing one of the true young stars in World Football. Unreal pivot.

Presumably Chelsea now pony up the 50MM for Lavia and Adams ends up sharing the position with the 19 year old? Either way -- Adams is going to get minutes now if he stays healthy.

To keep this some what related to this thread, Caicedo is someone who I would love Musah to eventually grow into. While Caicedo is obviously superior at almost every thing, you can see a lot of similarities between the two.

Similar age, body types, ball progression via the dribble, tons of international caps given their young age etc etc. Musah has a little more club experience but Caicedo really popped last season for Brighton. Musah has not really popped yet, just more being a decent pro.

I think Verratti is going to Saudi.

Not so fast…

EXCLUSIVE: Moisés Caicedo has just informed Liverpool that he only wants to join Chelsea! 🚨🔵🇪🇨 #CFC

Caicedo has decided to keep his word and only accept Chelsea as personal terms were agreed since end of May.

Chelsea, set to bid again in order to get deal done with Brighton.

There’s also scuttlebutt on teh twitterz that the Adams deal isn’t quite done yet and Adams could end up at Brighton after all of this. 🤷‍♂️

I'm cool with Adams anywhere. just hoping something gets done fast- even if it's staying at leeds. I want him fully immersed in his next team asap.

Apparently Caicedo has rejected the personal terms from Liverpool and only wants Chelsea.
As I understand it, Liverpool had terms verbally agreed with Caicedo, including his willingness to move to Liverpool, before they entered into discussions with Brighton. It sounds like the player and agent have gone back on their word with Liverpool.

Grain of salt, but per my various sources various sources...

Brighton and Liverpool are holding firm that there's a deal in place and, at a minimum, Chelsea need to match it. Liverpool are not pulling out of the deal. It's not just about the extra ~$12MM either -- Liverpool included better payment terms (3 years vs 5 or 7) and also a very substantial sell-on clause. It's believed Chelsea may struggle to do the same, as they had been negotiating with Brighton for some time before Liverpool's bid.[/grain of salt]

I’m sure there’s a reason they couldn’t last year as opposed to this year, but it’s kind if hilarious they wouldn’t go to 100 million for Jude Bellingham, but they did for Caicedo and got jilted. And now everyone knows they have 100 million to spend.

Bellingham was always going to Madrid IMO. Dreamers aside, I think most Liverpool fans kind of knew he was never coming.

Also the Henderson and Fab sales were an unexpected windfall.

FC Dallas. We have seats in section 128 and got a parking pass. So it should be fun!

I was wondering if all this was still just Liverpool and Brighton and Chelsea taking turns going 2 v 1 on the terms of the Lavia to Liverpool and and Caicedo to Chelsea deals, or maybe if Liverpool and Brighton are tag-team strong-arming Caicedo's idiot agent, but there's no way Liverpool would report this deal knowing it would fall through. The peasants are at the gates of FSG holding pitchforks and lighting torches as it is.

Ok looks like Adams to Chelsea is not happening. I assume this means personal terms were not agreed upon?

This might be the craziest transfer saga ever.

Personal terms were completed with Adams already. He was in London just to do his medical and then sign his deal. I haven't seen any reports saying he failed the medical, which makes me think this is part of the Caicedo/Brighton/Chelsea negotiations. Reports earlier this summer were stating that Adams was one of Brighton's top targets to replace Caicedo should he leave. I wonder if Brighton made Chelsea dropping their pursuit of Adams a part of the Caicedo deal.

This just needs to get resolved. Hell, the season is starting today.
