Vacation ideas? (1 Viewer)

Other half and I are trying to decide where to go next summer for vacation. Too many places & not enough money or time. 🤣

Somewhere warm is a must. Somewhere we don't need a passport to go.
Maybe national parks.
Maybe Nashville.
Maybe NOLA.
Maybe Key West.

Ideas?

Branson.

Or backpacking in the bighorn mountains in Wyoming. They are very similar.

What is primary interest? A bunch of different options in your list from urban cities to relaxing beach towns to a more active national park. Does one of those set a mood more than others, or looking for something that may be a mix of all of those?

You ought to try Nashville, or maybe NOLA...perhaps Key West.  That's about all I can think of right now.

Big fan of national parks, but it wouldn't be my preference to go in the summertime due to the increased crowds.

Out of these, definitely NOLA

I'll throw out a different option. But only if you like to avoid huge crowds. And if you like varied and beautiful country. Go to West Texas. Big Bend. Marfa. Alpine. Ft. Davis. Marathon. It's a long drive from anything but so worth it.

Which would you recommend?
We really like Islamorada and Marathon (Key Colony too). It’s laid back and not too far a drive to Key Largo or Key West. There are lots of great places to stay and some of the best seafood you’ll ever have in the area.

You mentioned some place warm, but I think the south is too dang hot and humid in the summer. My favorite summer spot in the US is Maine — start up at Acadia National Park, then drive down the coast.

Need more info...

What is your budget?

How long of a vacation?

How old are you and the S/O?

Are you two physically fit?

What do you like to do (just lay on beach, hike up a mountain, pitch a tent, battle a bear for some berries, go enjoy some AC in some cool museums, etc.)?

I don’t want to hijack but we are considering a July Maine trip. Thinking Acadia/Bar Harbor for a couple days and then maybe a beach town.  Any suggestions would be appreciated. TIA.

I think there was a Maine or New England thread here a few years ago, but search is bad.

A couple of my other favorite towns further south from Acadia are Camden and Kennebunkport. Camden’s got a good mix of stuff with boating and windjammers in the summer, and a nice view from the top of Mount Battie. Camden Harbour Inn was a really nice play to stay with a great restaurant on site.

Kennebunkport famously home to the late George HW Bush, but also has good resorts and some beaches. Some other beach towns further south from there, like Ogunquit or Old Orchard, but I have not been to those.

My history loving self also enjoyed going north to Lubec (home to the easternmost point in the US), and then crossed over to Canada to visit FDR’s Campobello house.

National parks are a whole lot prettier from spring to fall. In the winter they’re just as barren and grey as everywhere else. You have to go to more remote places of the parks to avoid the crowds at any time of the year.

Charleston, SC

Plenty of history, fantastic food, lots of shopping, some great beaches, great music venues, and overall some fun and entertaining things to do. The beauty of the Historic District is something you won’t soon forget. One week won't be nearly enough time.

To have fun and enjoy ourselves and, of course, relax too.

We want to do all of them and much more not on that list. I have been to NOLA & Nashville. She has not

I vote Vermont for some snow and skiing.
I said somewhere warm. No exceptions to that. ;) Cold climate = NO THANKS

We are planning to take this vacation in June or July

What kind of vacation do you want? Shots with bros? Looking at people trying to be weird? Very expensive hotels? There are some great things about Key West, but the other keys are better imo.
& I asked you why you feel they are better. ;)

Again, the other half and I so clearly no shots with "bros"

 Read above from previous post.

If you go to the Keys you can also visit Dry Tortugas National Park.

My wife and I did this trip a couple years ago when I had to go to Miami for a business meeting.  We stopped and stayed in Islamorada for a night and then spent a few nights in Key West.  We really enjoyed it.

Great post, eoMMan.

Figure about $85,000 for the week.

Week

I'm 19 and she's about to be 19.

Oh yeah.  We both do crossfit about 3 times a day.

All of your suggestions sound good.

Cabbage Key off the Southwest coast of FL. Have to take a water taxi to reach it. Had a fantastic time. Nothing to do but drink eat and become one with the turtles oh and fish of course. There is nothing like island time.

Cabbage key can give you the feel of the keys. You can get just as loaded there as you can on Duval St minus all the weirdos and young folks who act the fool. People who own the inn are very friendly. I just wish I hadn't waited until I was 60 to start going there.

I have visited most of the FL keys both lower and upper and I've got to say Cabbage Key has them all beat.

Skip the Keys then
And NOLA. Probably Nashville too. As others have commented, too hot. And humid.

I’d go to the mountains somewhere. Asheville, Chattanooga in the southeast, the Rockies, Sierra Nevadas or Pacific NW. I’m sure there’s something decent in VT/NH/Maine as well, but may be a bit chilly at night. Avoid the crowds at big name national parks, and check out a bunch of smaller state parks instead.

Ocean Springs MS. with day trips to Nawlins'...and do not miss the Shed for BBQ and Blues...and buying shrimp at the inlet dock, there is a casino, with a walkway...we fished for catfish using shrimp we had to cut in half for bait...best girl interloping on a date hookup ...evah...

Clarksdale MS. stay at the Shack Up Inn, or get the apartment over Morgan Freeman's Blues club Ground Zero or my buds apartment over the Mississippi Saxophone Emporium....Mr Deak Harp. Check him out on that Jack and Ozzy Osbourne in a motorhome show.

Oh and if you are a Jimmy Buffet fan the song cheese burger in paradise was inspired by a cheeseburger he ate there.
