The big ridiculous hallmark holiday is around the corner, and dumb as it is, guys are under pressure to make it special for their wimmens. So lets get down to brass tax and forego the cliche flowers & chocolate and get some creative and unique gift ideas.

So lets get this ball rolling...lets think outside the box.

I don't know where you live, but for those in SF, New York or LA area, Hornblower dinner cruises are pretty awesome. Something different than the traditional sit down nice dinner if that's on your list. 3 hour 5 star cruise with 4 course dinner while there is music, dancing to the awesome views. If you're not in these areas, maybe there is a nice dinner cruise line in your area.

Is it cliche or is it the appropriate gift for a cliche holiday to not go further than a cliche gift?

Cliche is what they want. Flowers at work so everyone sees how special she is. Some chocolates, sexy underwears, card, dinner. Yeah it is cliche as hell and will set you back $100-$300 but you will get some colored dots and it sets you up for a nice steak & beej day in a month. Valentines is not the time to get creative, save that for her bday/anniversary. Chicks have a lot of damn holidays, maybe best vday gift would be divorce papers.

She's getting nothing. I've never bought a valentine's day gift and I never will. Married for almost fifteen years now.

Big winner last year:

Went to a small antiques store in town that had old postcards, bought 9 that had a picture of couples on the front. They were all used, with love notes on the back from the people that must have used them 40-50 years ago.

Cost $9

Put them in a picture frame that is 3x3 to hold 9 pictures for about $10.

The extra fun for her was taking them out of the frame one by one and reading them.

I'd watch your back. She's been plotting the best way to kill you while making it look accidental for 15 years.

When we first started dating, I sent flowers to her workplace out of the blue. I was politely told thank you, that they were beautiful and smelled great and all that jazz, but that she wished I wouldn't waste so much money on something that would die in a week. I still buy her flowers out of the blue because I know she loves flowers, but nothing more than the $10 assortment at the local grocery store. If I tried to buy roses on Valentine's Day she'd shoot me.

We'll do dinner, no gifts.

I understand your whole angle and all, but what's wrong with a little something, out of the ordinary, to show her that you care about her?

Thing is it's not out of ordinary on Valentines Day.

It's better to do it on a day you not told to.

I am going to buy my wife a good bottle of 10 year tawny port and a nice, small box of chocolates to go with it. We will probably grill some steaks and then share the port/chocolates afterwards. I win, she wins.

That's a good night.

Handmade brown leather laptop/messenger bag that she's been wanting. ($80ish) and a nice card.

I'll be cooking a nice Prime Filet dinner for us at the house and will turn my phone off as soon as I walk through the door that night (her gripe is I'm always on my phone texting/emailing/etc) and will prob grab a couple dozen roses ($18) from Costco when I get the filets.
