Valuing current players to rookie draft picks (1 Viewer)

This past year was my first year to play in dynasty leagues. One area I'm still struggling with is valuing current players to rookie draft picks as far as trades are concerned. I stumbled upon a site dynastyguys.com that was being run by some of the contributors of Footballguys but it seems they are no longer maintaining the site. They had a tool and rankings/scores I could use to get a ballpark idea if trades were close. Does anyone have any guidance or direction they wouldn't mind sharing with a somewhat dynasty newbie? What about valuing IOPs to IDPs or IDPs to rookie draft picks? Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I guess what I always like to do is just rank out your top 50 players. Are there going to be some rookies in there? Probably at least a couple. I don't play IDP leagues, but the same concept applies. Just do your own rankings. It's cumbersome but that is how you really get down to the nitty gritty. You could rank your own top 100 players or so and use this chart to look at values.

Most of it will come through experience. Initially, you'll likely overvalue the rookie picks. Once you've been through a few rookie drafts and have had a chance to see some busts, you'll start to devalue the rookie picks back to a normal level.Until then, I think the best way to get an idea is to look at startup drafts. You only need a few to get a good idea of the value. Make sure they include rookie picks and just look up your player to see about where they fall relative to the rookie picks. A thread has already been started here. It should start filling up as the offseason moves on. There is only one draft so far that has rookie picks in it. It can be found here. You can get a pretty good idea even from only one draft.

Lol, that last draft might not be a great indicator, I was a man on a mission...I think you can put a premium on the top 4 picks and scale back appropriately. The question is do you want a known asset that has a known ceiling or an unknown asset with an unknown ceiling. There is a bi of a gamble in rookie picks as I have seen teams rebuilt to dominance with them and I have seen team trade them all away every year and be dominant. The gambler in me likes the picks but that is not always the winning approach. I used the shotgun approach in the linked draft, getting as many picks as I could and hope 75% hit.
