Vanderjagt -- does he get pulled too? (1 Viewer)

I know Indy isn't necessarily benching their starters but surely they might sit them late if they have the game well in hand. Quick question on that note -- if Indy rests their starters, will they likely do the same for the kicker as well? Or is the chance of getting hurt so remote they just let him keep kicking?M

Yes.

The logical response is in the history of the NFL has a team who has locked up a playoff spot ever signed a second kicker so that the primary kicker could rest, given that the primary kicker is healthy.

I’m going to go out on a very short limb and say no.

They already have Dave Rayner on the roster for kickoffs. Plus he could end up with the placekicking role next year, since Vanderjagt will be a free agent this off-season.

OK, I just remember in the past when Vandy was down, didn't Hunter Smith take over the duties and do pretty well?Pretty common that a punter has some PK experience as well...that's more along the lines of what I was thinking.

So then the quesiton becomes would Dungy like to give Rayner some game experience at, pehaps, the risk or ruing a perfect season.

Yes, and you could pose a similar question for the other positions: does Dungy risk a perfect season by putting his backup QB in (arguably a larger drop off from Manning than Rayner or even Smith from Vanderjagt) and resting Manning. What I am trying to figure out is if they look at the PK position the same. Not sure why, but I don't seem to think this is as stupid a question as some others. If you have someone else on your roster that can hit kicks, and you are resting the rest of your players, would you rest the PK as well?

Seems like most folks think "no" however...

I think it could very well be "yes". Very few teams carry a second kicker (a.k.a. kickoff specialist), so the opportunity is probably quite rare. Plus in this case, the kickoff specialist is not just a strong leg, but someone with a legitimate shot at the placekicking job next year pending the contract situation of the current starter. All the unique puzzle pieces are in place. And the best part... if they do sit Vanderjagt for the last few games, just imagine his comments to the media that we can look forward to!

Why? I'd take it as a compliment that the coach didn't want to go to the playoffs without me. I guess it's a glass half full/empty sort of thing.

Vanderjagt is still miffed about the whole kickoff sceanrio:

"All I'll say is if it were me kicking that way, I'd be ripped up one side and down the other. I would be ripped publicly and they would have guys like Dave Rayner coming in every week (to compete for the job). I don't want to stir things up too much, but I don't know why it is that way. It's ridiculous, it really is.''

"I don't want the job, I really don't. And I'm not saying Dave Rayner is bad or he can't do it. I just want it to be known that the whole time (last year) maybe I was right. Maybe I'm not as bad as they said I was. Maybe it is a little harder than it seems."

:lmao:

Funny thing is, in watching pregame drills, Rayner is every bit as accurate as Vandy. He even kicks as far as Vandy. So I wouldn't be so quick to rule this out. Also, Vandy is a sissy boy. He loves the spotlight, so ofcourse he wants to play and do kickoffs.I could easily see them giving him a rest.Another thought is that if they do pull their starters, then how effective will they really be with Sorgi at the helm? If he is ineffective, then the point is moot as Vandy will not get the chance anyway.

Vanderjagt will no longer have to worry about Rayner the next two weeks:

After 14 games and diminishing results, the Colts decided to go in another direction with their kickoff specialist. Rookie Dave Rayner was waived Wednesday and replaced by veteran Jose Cortez. If Rayner clears waivers, the team probably will re-sign him to the practice squad.

Rayner, coach Tony Dungy said, "just was not kicking the ball as well as he's capable of. I don't know if his leg was tired or what.'' The sixth-round draft pick had delivered 82 kickoffs in 14 games. He registered only one touchback and the distance of his kicks had decreased in recent weeks. That combination contributed to the Colts ranking 31st in their opponents' average drive start following kickoffs (30.6-yard line).

Cortez, 30, joins the Colts after spending time this season with Dallas, Philadelphia and San Francisco. He delivered 53 kickoffs in seven games for the Cowboys, producing nine touchbacks. "Jose's got nice pop on the ball,'' said Dungy, who wasn't certain whether Cortez will be active for Saturday's game at Seattle.
