Vanderjagt to appear on Late Nite with (1 Viewer)

3.  Brady threw two incompletions on 1st and 2nd down - leaving a 3rd and 10.  Then they set up for a FG after a Brady 1-yard run.  What made Manning's attempt so lousy was he had a 2nd and 2 at the 28, with 2 TOs left, and tried 2 low % passes instead of picking up the 1st down, using a time out, and having 1st and 10 at around the 25 or so with 1 TO left and 20+ seconds left (which then you can try to take a couple of shots downfield and/or moving the ball close for a higher % FG).
See, I totally disagree with the logic that it is inherently correct to throw a short pass in that situation. A touchdown wins the game. A field goal sends it to OT. A TD is much better than a field goal, and you may not get a better chance than taking a couple of shots on downs where the opponents may be playing up, expecting a short pass. Going for it all is consistent with the way the Colts have played the past two years, in case you haven't been watching.
You're assuming something that might be added as a 4th point of departure for the Brady-Manning comparison: Brady may not have been given any discretion as to where to throw the ball during the snow game. That's entirely plausible given that he was a 1st year starter. Manning is the on-field coach of the offense and chooses his own plays, with only slight limits placed upon his discretion.

It can be correctly said, then, that Manning called the plays that failed to convert 3rd down while Brady simply ran what he was told to run.

That game was lost way before Vandy missed.  Only a  admitted totally blown call from the ref on the Pitt INT was the only reason Indy even had another chance to try and "Tie" the game.
No, it wasn't lost before the Vandy miss, otherwise the kick woudn't have been for the tie. Yes, the bad call on the interception and other events enabled the Colts to be in a position to tie, but that doesn't take away from the miss. Choke is a choke on that kick.
I was confused at various points during that game. Sure Indy looked bad in the beginning. Then they had that ONE drive where they were pretty much doing as they pleased to the Pitt defense. It was the one where they were pinned deep in their own end and they ran it to the left outside with Edge and he bashed his way, barely, for the first down. Then they just kept running the ball and using medium passes. However, they were stopped in the redzone. What happened to that thought process? It worked. Then they just started passing it every time. I blame bad play calling AND a worthless kicker that is paid mulimillions of dollars to make those kicks!! Stupid kickers.

On 2nd down - that is debatable.  On 3rd down - that is a poor decision.
You're result merchanting. If they scored a TD on third down you wouldn't be questioning the decision.
"IF" But they did not..that is the key. I remember the announcer saying right before that play. With 2 TOs left this is an eternity for the Colts. They botched the 2 plays badly before the FG attempt and squandered their TOs.

Piss poor.

Thing is, I feel that if Dallas Clark hadn't scored a TD on that drive late in the game, we'd simply be saying the Colts were outplayed, and there wouldn't be all this Manning is a choker nonsense.

OK, a simple translation for those of us in the reality-based community:

If you get the ball on your own 46 yard line with 2:06 left, drive to the opposing 28, throw two incomplete passes, and set up for a field goal, you're clutch*.

If you get the ball on your own 42 with 1:01 left, drive to the opposing 28, throw two incomplete passes, and set up for a field goal, you're a choker.

Somehow I think the color of your jersey must have something to do with it.

* I left out the tuck rule play. I think the right call was made based on the rule, but it still was a bad play on Brady's part; if he gets sacked there, New England is in serious trouble.
Actually, the amount of cap room you eat up on your team, your ability to call plays, your (supposed) ability to lead a team, your selection as the first pick in the draft and your ability to pile up stats but never win when it really counts must have something to do with it.Manning will have plenty more chances to prove that he isn't a playoff choker, but his resume' so far indicates that he is. I think he now officially has "something to prove" every time he enters the playoffs. Brady has already won more titles than most quarterbacks ever will. And this "late" in his career he's showing that he can put up big stats, too. Not that stats matter next to his Super Bowl victories. One day Peyton defenders will see that.

No, not a Pats fan. Just wondering why there's so much hoopla around a football family that hasn't ever won anything.

Anyone have a link to the video of Vanderjagt on Letterman?

I'm hearing different stuff. Did he say something about Tiger Woods?

J
Joe ,I believe Dave had asked him about Peyton's post game comments and Vanderjagt replied "Peyton is the Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan of football," said Vanderjagt. "I'd give him a little leeway . . ."

Vandy also addressed the play calling. He said the plan was to get into field goal range and the go for the win. I also liked his answer as to why he missed ithe FG. "All the Steeler fans on the left side of the stadium, they all blew at the same time,"

Sorry I found no clip of segment, only this

What is with all this crap about playing for a tie? Pittsburgh had dominated the game in the standard drive the field set, you don't play for a tie when you have a chance to win a game that you're being outplayed in.Open WR's over the middle? What camera angle did you see that on? Fact of the matter is we don't know what else was/wasn't open. For all we know the short routes were covered and Peyton just had to get rid of the ball without getting sacked which would basically end the game right then and there, something Brady had to have the officials bail him out to accomplish. The conditions keep being mentioned as well. So it's not better to have set your kicker up with a 46 yarder in nice indoor conditions that should make the kick easy than it is to set him up with a 40+ yard field goal in a blizzard? Which kick is easier to make?I still wonder what people's perception of these two QB's is if Vandy and Vinatieri were on opposite teams the last few years.

Hi Randy,That's what I heard. That he said Manning was the Tiger Woods / Mike Jordan of Football and was cool about it.
