They already booked rooms at Luxor since mid strip was too pricey. I just looked and rooms are over $250 / night for that dump with Bud Light plastered on the side.

Combined with $1000 airfare to get from the east coast over there and I might skip this year.

$250/night sounds high. Is that only for weekend nights?
Caesar Rewards is usually pretty generous with their room deals for smaller gamblers. If any of them have a Caesar’s card, check out the Flamingo or even the Linc. We stayed at the Flamingo last trip and it’s pretty much the perfect location if staying on the strip.
 
Downtown has a lot going on these days. I still like staying on the strip but a trip downtown is a must.

Circa is a really nice casino but all the old casinos downtown are having a huge rebirth.
 
When I was in my early 20's my Grandmother had a connection at the El Cortez. Used to get everything comped. Did several guys trip with 5+ rooms. It was wild being in downtown back then. Definitely grittier. I remember several years I stumbled over to Binion's Horseshoe and watched the World Series of Poker. Johnny Chan, Stu Unger, Dolly Brunson and more a few feet away. It was very cool. You could get serious steak and lobster for dirt cheap. Free drinks. Ton of fun.
 
Got back yesterday. Had a blast. Downtown is a damn good time. Yeah there's less eye candy, but cheaper tables/drinks/etc are a nice compromise. GF loved it too so that's a win. THANK YOU to everyone who threw out suggestions.

Le Thai - Fantastic chow! Cool vibe. Loved it.

Hugos - Great experience. The Dry Aged NY Strip was decent but not great. Prices were higher than I expected but when you factor in the salad, sides, service, etc it's a fair deal. Everyone enjoyed the dinner (8 of us).

Top Golf - WE got the Black Clover suite at the end of 3rd floor. Had a blast. Can definitely see how that is a great place to watch games on Sunday. Most of the Bday boy's friends bailed so it was just 5 of us (2 women) with a $1200 Tab...that sucked... much more than I was planning on spending since we chopped it 2 ways so BDay Boy didn't have to spend anything.

Container Park - Fun walk. Didn't spend a ton of time there but it was cool.

Circa Sportsbook - Awesome Book! Seating is kinda a PITA on Sunday but had a blast on Saturday.

Golden Nugget Sportsbook - Not bad, but after Circa anything is a let down.

Red : Great Ramen inside Golden Nugget.

Hit the Bodies Exhibit at Luxor... pretty damn cool.

Mon Ami Gabi was fantastic as always. Had to wait ~$20 for a patio rail table but always the way to go with the Wife/GF.

Freemont Street was a ****show but fun. The AV Dork in me was impressed with the display/audio.
 
Went to Vegas 2 weeks ago for a work trip. Everything is so damn expensive there it is unreal. Thank god work paid for flights, room and 3 meals a day.

Stayed at Flamingo on the strip: Liked my room, one of the better basic rooms I stayed at while in Vegas in quite some time, not saying it was a suite or anything like that, but definitely good for 1-2 people. Nice location in the center of all the things I was trying/needing to do. Flamingo Room: 7.2 out of 10.

Downtown: went downtown for a day, I loved the atmosphere, plenty of great people watching going on and plenty of bands/acts to watch. I didn't like the casinos. Most of them were 6-5 Blackjack tables and required you to put $2 every hand on the "chance to spin the blackjack wheel"-Such a sucker bet imo if you could even call it a bet at all. The casinos seem to really be sticklers on the amount you are gambling in order to get a drink, etc. Not like the strip. Downtown: 6.7 out of 10 only because I liked the atmosphere.

Circa: Just walked in to check it out and look at the sportsbook, sportsbook is nice and fresh and new, but if this is even possible, the TV situation is almost too big to try to watch more than 1-2 games at a time. You really have to move your neck/head to check out another game. A lot of action going on at once. March Madness or NFL Sunday would be great. Circa Sportsbook: 6.7 out of 10.

Ellis Island: Casino off the strip a little, Is said to be where the locals go. Which seems true as a lot of the casino workers, etc suggested and talked about it. Had a great time here. We watched the Monday night football game here, food was good, it wasn't too crowded. Then hit the tables after and drinks were flowing. Waitress didn't stop bringing drinks and shots all night. A little run down compared to the high end places, but it was comfortable and easy to get on tables and everyone was really nice. Ellis Island: 8.7 out of 10

Food: It was impossible to get out of a burger joint for under $50 for 2 people. Spent anywhere from $52-$75 every lunch we had. Dinner we splurged a little more hitting some places like Ruth Chris' which was delicious. All the food we ate though was a solid experience. I don't think I consumed any food that I didn't like. 8.3 out of 10.

Overall experience: 6.9 out of 10. Would go back to Ellis Island and eat some of the same food. Maybe go downtown again for one night.
 
Just leaving Vegas now. Man - the nights this week were COLD. Good to see the city pretty much all the way back. Biggest shock to me was how difficult it was to find a regular blackjack table. Played at Planet Hollywood for convenience and there was one double deck blackjack table open. $50 min. One. All the other table games were progressive games with multi bet action. Lots more poker games, pai how etc. I asked about it and the regular blackjack went to a theatre type set up with everyone playing machines. I’m still pissed that they increased the house edge with the BS 6-5 blackjack payouts. First they said it was to offset drinks. Only at lower limit tables. Higher limit paid 3/2 still. But now it’s all 6/5. Rip off

I do wonder when Vegas will price itself out of gambling. Not gonna bet against the house though.

$5-10 daytime or $10-15 nightime PLUS Mandatory $2 Progressive bet
(IF You hit blackjack the digital wheel will spin and almost always land on $20 or $30..... with a rare $40, $50 or uber rare $70 hit. There were lots of 3 digit, 4 digit and progressive ($10-20k) spaces but they never ever hit in prob 100-125 spins that I saw. I don't know what that house edge add would be... but it's enough that I still played $10-15/hand on $5 min table just to offset that fixed $2 hit a little.

Noticed one bizarre variation : LUCKY CAT Blackjack.

Basically a coin flip that he gets at least 1 cat. Sucks.
 
The $2 progressive bet is the biggest scam I have ever seen. $1 is a scam too, but somewhat do-able. $2 every hand just seems like you would never get ahead unless you are betting big amounts. When I was in Vegas I saw people betting $5 with the $2 progressive bet, like come on, you are putting up $7 every hand to win $3...if and when you won.

I haven’t been to Vegas in a few years, but BJ was 6/5 most everywhere on the strip then.
 
Just got back. Spent one night downtown. Lot of fun. Andiamo is outstanding. Old school service. Great menu. Fremont street was fun. Very good bands. Circa was cool - did some gaming there. Sights were excellent and best to see games. Not just the stadium seating - the bar was great too with tons of TVs. Don’t know if I’d want to stay downtown but it’s worth a night

I think people let their guard down more on the strip vs downtown. I’ve never had a problem staying at the Nugget.

I think people let their guard down more on the strip vs downtown. I’ve never had a problem staying at the Nugget.

In terms of thinking the strip is safer than downtown.. A lot of crime on the strip doesn‘t make the headlines, unless its a murder.
