Looked for the Vegas thread but didn't find it.
Going out to Vegas Thurs Nov 10th (late flight in) till Monday Nov 14th for the GF's Cousin's 40th.

Staying at the Golden Nugget Downtown. Never stayed down on Freemont Street. I know about the Zipline, hookers, and bums. I'd love any any suggestions on:
- fun stuff to do (day or night)
- cheap drinks/eats that are worth hitting
- Best places to gamble (Craps / Blackjack / HoldEm mostly)

So far we've got:
Thurs: Landing at midnight, crashing

Friday:
GF has to work. I'll explore solo (gamble, drinks, etc) .. open to suggestions for fun day spots downtown. Friday Night is wide open .

Sat AM: Bodies Exhibit then Patio Brunch at Mon Ami Gabi (GF's fave)
Sat Night: Bday Dinner at Via Brasil Steakhouse (Bday Boy's Choice). Going out after...

Sun Afternoon: Guessing we will either go to the Raiders game (Bday Boy is a fan), or post up at a sports book / sports bar to watch. (WELCOME ANY SUGGESTIONS)

Monday Afternoon: Working a bit in the morning then open in afternoon. Flying out around 5.

Thanks in advance!

I love, love, love downtown Vegas! So much of a better vibe compared to the strip. It’s basically just a big party all day, all night. Honestly the drinks inside the casino bars are half the cost of the drinks on the strip (and they make them strong). In terms of gambling, I only play live poker and there are plenty of whales at the Golden Nugget. The Golden Nugget also has nice high hand promotions in the poker room. You’re gonna have a blast.

Go to the Hammer show at Four Queens.
Check out the sports book at Circa.
Do the scooter taco food tour around downtown Vegas.
Check out Area 51 (not technically downtown but close).

I live in downtown Vegas, go out several days a week on Fremont. Just walked back home from Circa actually.

Cheapish stuff:
Downtown cocktail room is a craft cocktail bar that has everything half off from 5-7 every day as a happy hour. Awesome drinks. The door is a bit hidden, FYI, kinda as a speakeasy type thing.
Le Thai has a great happy hour as well.
I find the drinks at Nacho Daddy to be too expensive post pandemic, but if I was on vacation I wouldn't care and people seem to like it.
Pizza Rock is always a crowd pleaser.
Sand dollar is a music bar in the Plaza that has live music at 10 pm every night with no cover, and craft beer they comp when playing on the 6 or so machines in there.
Atomic Liquors is a can't miss.

Best steakhouses for a group of guys are Barry's at Circa / Adiamos at the D IMO

I hate gambling at the Nugget btw, can never get a drink on the table games and the vibe is cruise ship like, Circa or D are best for a group of guys IMO

I could write a book so I will stop there.

I loved Le Thai. Is the Griffin still there?

For a couples dinner, Hugo's Cellar is old school. Love that place

Griffin is still there. I look right at the green neon sign from my balcony.

I used to gamble a TON of video poker at 4 Queens before they nuked their bartop paytables. We have eaten at Hugos 15-20 times. I really like the old school experience, but they raised their prices ~25% post pandemic and i think there are better choices at the new price point. Having eaten there so much, I can tell you it can be too inconsistent from visit to visit so I don't send people there anymore as I don't know when it will be an "off" day

Jumping in here for my own question.

Where can I go see some good local music? I'll be there in December and would love to catch some local rock n roll or some ****

I love Hugo's but haven't eaten there post-pandemic. It really fell off like this?

Damn you guys rock already! Thank you and keep 'em coming. Creating a Google maps Bookmark folder 😂

I feel like the food only slipped a bit, but they raised the prices so much that i think it is just not worth it even if the food wasn't worse. With that said, their cocktails and wine list still are the best value in a steakhouse downtown. The tableside cherries jubilee is awesome, we get it every single time. Tableside salad is nice. Their bread has always sucked, and the sides are just average. It is a very unique venue and a nice date night, one of the last old school Vegas places left, but outside of that specific desired scenario I can't recommend it.

Keep in mind Barrys didn't exist prepandemic and everyone pretty much agrees Oscars is now much improved, so that is part of it (for me)

Its been 10 years, but I loved Gordie Brown at the Nugget. Looks like he's back there Thurs and Saturdays now. His show has closed and moved a couple times. You will not find better entertainment for $20.

So if you want to do a sports book for the games, the new Circa on Fremont (old vegas) is stunning. New casino and man is it insane.

He’s been at the GN for a long time.

Yes, until he wasnt. Now he's back. In the past 10 years he was at the Nugget, Planet Hollywood and Hooters that I know of.
You’re right. I have stayed at GN and PH the most and he was there also.

Stadium Swim is worth checking out, there is a cover if you aren’t staying at Circa. We enjoyed 8 East there for dinner, great wings and brisket fried rice. Nugget has $5 table games which is a rarity these days. Particle Ink was a cool unique show not too far away. Neon Graveyard also close by. Lots of free live music on Fremont Street so fun to just wander around a bit. Legacy Club top of Circa cool place for a drink.

Downtown eats:
Pizza Rock for pizza or anything else on their menu - it's all good
Andiamo - my favorite steakhouse in Vegas - food/service/atmosphere is all on point
Le Thai for Short Rib Fried Rice and 8 East (at Circa) for Brisket Fried Rice - can't go wrong with either - both are amazing
Amercian Coney for a late night chili dog

Drinking:
Downtown Cocktail Room - while they still have a happy hour it has recently changed. No longer 1/2 price from 5-7 - instead they now have HH from 5-8 but with some $10 drink specials. Still has really great cocktails but the best deal in Vegas on drinks no longer exists. :sadbanana:
The Laundry Room - it's a speakeasy that you need reservations for and it's sophisticated/quiet but very cool and also amazing drinks. There has been a piano player when we've been there so it's a great "Date night" kind of place.
The Velveteen Rabbit - This one isn't on Fremont St but over in the Arts District area. Another place with a cool atmosphere and creative cocktails. Also "date night" approved.
The Legacy Club at the top of Circa has the best view from downtown and is a classy (but expensive) place for a nightcap.

Misc:
Touring the Neon Museum is really cool. Lots of Vegas history.
The Mob Museum was fascinating if you're interested in that side of Vegas history.
El Cortez is an underrated place to hang out/drink/gamble - old school cool. They have lounge entertainment as well (though not local rock bands that you said you are looking for.)
If you venture over to Area 15, both Omega Mart and the Lost Spirits Distillery tour are awesome (though they are quite different from one another).

Be safe and have fun.

This guy?

That seems kinda not funny nor fun

Holy smokes guy, you live right on Fremont?
a block off in a high rise condo
we went down to one car since we can walk for everything except groceries.

that sucks that downtown cocktail room changed their happy hour, was just there maybe a month ago in the last week of their summer menu ugh inflation

Yeah. There were signs everywhere for him. I could see it going over better on Fremont St as there isn’t as many shows (that I can remember).

If big breakfasts are your thing, order the chicken and waffles at Hash House a Go-Go in the Plaza and we'll see. If not, two strips of bacon and a PBR tall boy is $4.

I would love to check out Omega Mart. It’s one of the oddest yet cool things in Vegas.

I was going to suggest Pizza Rock as well but another good pizza place is Evel Pie. It's not Pizza Rock but it's pretty dang good.

For some morning munchies I suggest The Donut Bar but get there early.
The Donut Bar

If you want to slum it for breakfast, there's a White Castle at the edge of the canopy; the breakfast sliders are massively underrated. If that isn't campy enough, there's a Denny's across the street with a full bar and a wedding chapel. Lol.

We stayed downtown in June and partied on Fremont Street until the wee hours. Saw three of the most fun cover bands ever playing on the various outdoor stages throughout the night. Completely free.

Food at these two restaurants not the best, but the chance to network with the elite clientele they attract cannot be passed up.

We usually stay at the dump called Harrahs, which has a good location but the strip leaves so much to be desired these days. Plus the Circa book is the best in Vegas IMO.

Check out the container park shopping area just a block or two up Fremont past the El Cortez hotel
It’s kind of gone downhill over the years imo
Perhaps it's slipped a little--but being that he's staying on Fremont street--it's literally a 7-10 minute walk away for him. Even if it's gone downhill a bit--I think it's worth walking over there to check it out.

We're going for 3 days in December. Have concerts on the strip Sat and Sun and will do dinners close by. Friday night open though to head downtown. Booked Andiamo's steakhouse for dinner at 7:15. As soon as reservations open up going to book the Laundry Room at 6 to pre-game a bit.

Another vote for Hash House. A must every time I am in Vegas. Followed by a nap somewhere.

Hate to hear that this might not be as great. Loved this place. Found my soulmate at BIN 702 one time. Unfortunately she didn't see it that way.

OK now to convince my boys to give up their traditional spot on the strip for the March Madness trip.

Was a strip guy for years until on a random weekend I stayed downtown at The D with some friends that knew Vegas better than I did. I have yet to stay on the strip since. Go for a show or something special for an evening, but downtown is homebase.

They already booked rooms at Luxor since mid strip was too pricey. I just looked and rooms are over $250 / night for that dump with Bud Light plastered on the side.

Combined with $1000 airfare to get from the east coast over there and I might skip this year.

One of the big reasons the strip sucks for gambling is only two corporations own the strip. At least Derek Stevens will put out some opinionated lines.

On the downtown vs strip argument, both sides are correct; off course. When I’m with the wife, we love the opulence of a place like Aria, Wynn or Cosmo as our home base. Nice pool, spa, rooms and restaurants. We mostly stick to slots which are the same price everywhere.

For a guys trip or a golf trip, downtown works great. Cheaper gambling, live music, cheaper eats, etc. I still think Fremont street is sort of gross, but no different than the overpasses between strip resorts I guess.
