Vegas (3 Viewers)

Alright, this is obviously a huge topic but I'm going to just jump in at the end and see if I can get pointed in the right direction. If there's somewhere I should specifically look in this thread, feel free to let me know.

Going for the 1st time to Vegas with the wife (neither of us have been there). Heading there June 13-16th, it'll be our 10th anniversary and it'll just be us (no kids).

Questions:

1) Obviously where to stay. Not interested in driving around so just want to stay where everything is (the strip) and just be there or walk. Not looking to break the bank but don't want to stay at a POS either. Pool is not a priority for us. I wouldn't mind something either with a casino where we're located or very close by (few minute walk) as I will probably be doing some later night gambling on my own when she turns in.

2) Even though we don't want to drive around much, should we both with a rental car or just taxi it around if need be?

3) Would like to do some gambling although it's not the focus. The wife will want to sit and play poker for a while, something like $300-$500 to sit with and just play some NL (or even limit if recommended). I'm the same although I'll probably partake in some Pai Gow or a couple other table games at some point. Best spots?

4) Looking to check out at least one show. Best recommendation? Should we go more than one show? Make reservations or just find one while there?

5) Might do some golfing. She's a very amateur golfer, I'm not great but can at least play and hold my own. Recs? If she decides not to play and I want to go shoot a quick 9 while she's getting a massage or something, any ideas? Along that line, any recs for massages?

6) Restaurants--we're open to anything but it's what we love doing together so good food is high on our list of "things to do".

7) Any specific "deals" for any of this stuff? Comps and how to get them?

8) Any other rookie mistakes not to make or things to look out for.

9) What kind of dress should we bring along? Mostly casual/comfortable or more dressy for most of the time?

A buddy of mine here goes quite a bit and he'll be giving me some recommendations soon but figured I'd check in here. I know one place he recommended was Vdara in terms of value and proximity to main area. We're also SPG members so I was looking at the Westin since we can get some perks if we stay there (free upgrades, etc.). Thoughts on either?

I'll hang up and listen.

Vdara is a good suggestion. The Westin is decent enough and looks like it's close to everything, but the walk to the strip will just start to become annoying.

I plugged in your dates on Hotwire and it looks like you can get Wynn/Palazzo/Venetian for $151. Not sure what your budget is, but I'd jump all over that as those rooms go for much more on most weekends. Just be comfortable during the day. No flip flops and don't be one of those people carrying around the yard sized drink. Nice shoes, jeans or slacks with a button up shirt for dinners and shows.

Oh, that's fine and about what Vdara looks like it will be and what I was expecting/hoping to pay. Which of those 3 would you recommend between Wynn/Palazzo/Venetian?

Well, with Hotwire you get what you get.

But, I'd rank the hotels in that area as:

Encore

Wynn

Palazzo

Venetian

It's really a toss up between the 4 though and Vdara comes close (although I never stayed there, just walked through). Only thing is Vdara doesn't have a casino. Restaurants in the Wynn/Encore, Venetian/Palazzo area are all top shelf too.

I can google it but I'd prefer someone to tell me who's done it. How far is it to M from Bally's? How much for the cab ride or can I walk it?

No way you want to walk it. M isn't all that. Driving in from LA you get there first and I like that. It's close to family homes. I prefer the locals casinos where traffic and crowds are minimized. I spent most my time in Station Casinos after the first year of living there. The Cantor books have the best NFL games and I want an account, but they include the Trop, Venetian, Cosmo, Palms and others. I have no idea what the cab ride would be, but it's a good ten miles.

The M resort? on the south of the city? It's about 15-20 minutes or so on i-15 depending on traffic and time of the day. It wouldn't be all that cheap of a cab ride is my guess.

Absolutely a cab ride and probably not a cheap one. Let us know why you want to go there and we can help you decide if it is worth it.

The casino that I play at at home(1 hour North of Toronto)is in tight with M and they honour eachothers comp cards. I was going to go for an expensive dinner when I'm there next weekend as I never spend my points at home.

Also, one last thing:

Should I even bother looking into a little ceremony for us to renew vows or is that incredibly cheesy and a waste of money?

Booked for the Paris this Sun-Tue. I have a Red Room Premiere already. I've never stayed at Paris...is it worth the $20 trick here or am is what I've got already as good as it really gets at Paris?
Ill be there Sunday-Wednesday...you there for the Hoffa celebration?
Nope. Just a getaway with the wife before the next child is born (September).

You're probably better off just spending the money you would on a cab and buying a nice dinner near your spot on the strip.

Used Hotwire and got three nights at Trump for $340 total from Thursday to Sunday. I would have liked to be closer to the middle of the strip but hopefully this isn't too bad.

I guess I should do most of my gambling at the Wynn across the street? Also, how is golfing there as it looks like there is a course there too?

I haven't played it, but for $500, it better be spectacular. They are plowing it under to build a convention center, so play it while you can, I guess.

Venetian/Palazzo and TI are not too far of a walk from Trump for gambling.

Yikes. Ok, I'll be golfing elsewhere.

I'd like to know as well..... i got a 10 year coming up and Mrs Ref said we cant go to vegas unless we do this.....

More takes:

Rental car - only rent if you are going outside of the city. I did a half day convertible rental with my wife so we could visit red rock. Very nice area to drive and hike...worth it if you are looking for an alternative to gambling and the pool.

Player cards - one card I suggest to everyone (even non gamblers) is the Identity card from Cosmo. I checked in there last trip, didn't gamble at all, and now I get offers for two free nights (Sunday to Thursday) or $75 per night credit on weekends.

News and reviews - prepare for your trip by listening to the five handy by midnight podcast. They do weekly news updates and play trip reports from their voice mail. www.fivehundybymidnight.com

I guess I should have mentioned that you need to look for "Casino" under amenities to make sure you didn't end up at Trump.

I always used to like getting a rental car before they built that stupid garage. Now it's just a colossal waste of time.

It was good for getting around the further parts of the strip or off-strip places during the day before I got my buzz going. We could often score good priceline deals for $8-$9/day and the service used to be faster than waiting in the cab line.

Have a conference in July in Vegas at the Bellagio. Had the conference room rate for 4 nights but managed to get 2 free nights at Aria I'm using. I run my own business so it's out of my pocket. Hoping to get the other 2 nights free as well so I can shave off more cost. Has anyone stayed at the Aria? I haven't even ever set foot in it. I was out there a couple times during construction and then last year when I was there and staying at Bellagio somehow I managed to never go in there. Also, how is the poker room there?
Just got the other 2 nights handled so staying 4 nights at the Aria. I used a Facebook app to get the points and managed to get the 4 nights for points there basically. My conference is at the Bellagio so I'm sure I'll be back and forth a lot. I really like the restaurants at the Venetian as well. I always end up at the Grand Lux at least twice per trip.

I've done it. My wife and I got tattoos, rented a limo, went to the Little Church of the West fpr our 10th anniversary and had a blast. Was a cool experience and they did a very nice job with it. I recommend it.

You can walk from Bellagio to Aria thru an enclosed corridor on the west side of Aria that connects the two

Thanks. I knew there was a tram that ran over at least to the Vdara but may be quicker just to walk that corridor. I prefer to stay where the meetings are but with taxes and all this saves about $700 I can add to my bankroll.

A few takes on the current topics:

Highest recommendation possible for Absinthe. Comedy, acrobatics, hold your breath intensity, burlesque...it has it all. I took a group of 6 last time, and each one of us had a different favorite act.

I often stay at TI. I stay based on location and price. They have their own player's card, so a little bit of play tends to go a long way in terms of offers (free weekday; $69 weekends). I've always been able to book multiple rooms and use the $20 (or $50 for multiple rooms) trick to get on high floors and/or a suite. TI has a really nice location being next to Mirage and across from the Venetian/Palazzo.

If you are looking for more of a quiet/romantic getaway, I suggest using Priceline to bid on 5 star hotels. You will most likely be placed in Trump...it's a true 5 star. Beautiful lobby and rooms with lots of square footage and immaculate bathrooms. It's across from the Fashion Show Mall but has no casino. The ladies liked the spa a lot when we stayed there.
If you bid "Strip North," you will be put in Palazzo, Venetian, or Wynn. If you bid "Strip South," you will be put in Aria, Cosmo, or Vdara. The only way you will get Trump is if you bid "Strip North Vicinity."
Good to know - I haven't used priceline for a few years...didn't know the split up the strip into parts.
i've never used priceline, i wouldn't even know how to bid or anything.. is it really a savings?
Used to be. Now it seems you can do better than or get near what you can score on Priceline by using Hotwire or if you're really industrious, finding promo codes and plugging them into the hotels websites directly.

A couple I use are:

smartervegas.com and broadwaybox.com
thanks, i've never used any of the travel sites, priceline, hotwire, expedia.. any of them.

i've always seemed to get what i thought was a fair price with direct booking, but maybe i'm missing out.

i'll try smartervegas
betterbidding.com is your friend when looking at what will be accepted for Priceline and Hotwire
:goodposting:

You should ALWAYS check out betterbidding.com before bidding on Priceline. There is a thread that will tell you all the hotels and in what areas. There are also threads for recent deals, so you can see what others are winning.

I have lots of success with Vegas and NY city on Priceline.

Can you still get upgraded at check in if you booked through Priceline?
Good question. I'm still up in the air on mine at Aria. My first 2 nights are city view and the last 2 are just standard resort rooms. The person booking linked them together so hoping they let me stay in the city view the whole stay. Moving would suck but can't argue with the price of free. Only responsible for the resort fee on the last 2 nights, total $56.

Anything exciting at the Bellagio lately?

:notexcitedaboutgoingtovegas:
I'm probably gonna gamble there a bit in July as my conference is there but I'm staying at the Aria. A lot depends on if I can find a $50 double deck table there. A lot of times they are $100 minimums. I prefer the Venetian personally but I'm always pumped to make the trip.

Any restaurants I need to make reservations for now that are worth checking out or I should be fine doing it all there next month?

I'll be in Mandalay Bay Friday-Sunday night. I just can't get excited for this trip and I have a free ticket for the Stones. We're doing a semi-family reunion all Mother's Day deal, and since I've been a single dad so long the Stones ticket is my Mother's Day present. I really don't want to deal with this crowd and dragging a 14 year old around Vegas generally sucks for both us.
Friday was messed up. We planned on being there by noon and didn't get there til 5 (driving from LA). Hungry, we went straight to the Border Grill and the food was excellent (try the Halibut or the Molé). Got into the House of Blues early and saw Santana. Good show, well worth it for me. Our crew had a morning Cabana. I let others entertain my kid so I could sleep in. At 10:30 I made it down to the casino, on my way to the pool, and I noticed a spectacular wall of booze across from the House of Blues. Not sure the name of the bar but it's just a long wall of booze with video gaming at each seat. So craving complimentary choice tequilas I ordered a Casa Noble along with coffee and water and put $100 in the machine. It was a multi-game machine and poker was killing me so for grins I switched to 4 card keno. Whoever played it before me was going with 2 five spots and 2 seven spots and I wasn't interested enough to change the cards. 3rd play hit a 5 spot for $750 bucks. I quickly ran that down to 400 and something when a 7 spot hit for 7 grand. Cashed out. Other than betting the wrong side on a couple NBA games, I didn't gamble again. Paid for everything and came home with 5k more than I left with.

Notes. Breakfast buffet at Mandalay is horrible. Room service is worse. The grub at the pool is disgusting. My burger bun was stuck to the meat 7-11 style. If it's coming from the resort kitchens just say no. The independent restaurants are good. Lupo, Border Grill, Citizens, Sushi joint, and even the Raffles Cafe were excellent. The Eye Candy bar in the middle of the casino is crawling with smokin' hot escorts every night. If you want one, just put your phone to your ear and look her way. If she picks up her phone and smiles, go say hi. I'm used to them being discouraged but MBay has a reputation for encouraging them atm. Stones show was a bucket list check off (to see them again, not for the first time) and they didn't disappoint though the years definitely show. Katie Perry didn't embarrass herself doing Beast of Burden, but she's an idiot anyway. Another part of my clan saw Elton John and they were so blown away that I wish I could have done both. For reasons too involved to bore you with, I won't be staying at any MGM properties going forward.

I love the Wynn, btw. And four card Keno.

I work downtown and we have $5 double tables every night if you want to cheap. Not the same eye candy as on the strip but your $$ will last longer.

Will be there this weekend. Staying at Venetian. Going to Chateau Friday night. Golfing at Painted Desert Saturday then hitting up SHe or SushiSamba for dinner. Spending the waning hours of the night downtown playing cheap blackjack or craps. No Sunday plans yet.

Anyone ever eaten at SHe?

Cool. Planning a trip in October and we usually stay downtown. There are always a few double deck tables scattered around but sometimes hard to find a seat. Don't usually go all the way over to MSS, except to eat at the brew pub, so now if we do, I will check it out.

Yes, great food. And a very good scene. They had a dj playing the night we were there and runway dancers of some sort. Would recommend and would go again.

Tried searching but....

How do people feel about the Wynn? Nice casino/poker room? Dining and nightlife options?
Wynn is regarded as one of the top places for all of those.
Great Euro pool too.

Sit there and play blackjack at the pool and watch the topless girls swim around.

Highly recommend.

For drinks, order the "Berry and bull" or maybe "bull and berry" - it's all hazy right now.

I work downtown and we have $5 double tables every night if you want to cheap. Not the same eye candy as on the strip but your $$ will last longer.
Where do you work downtown?
Main Sreet Station

You should! There are almost always seats available at the double deck tables.

No but sushisamba is fantastic if you like appetizer/tapas style.

There was an article in this week's Las Vegas Weekly magazine about the new pool open at Sapphire Gentlemen's club. Management is enticing the dancers to go to the pool during the day by giving them a break on their house fee. I may have to check this pool out very soon!

Also, one last thing:

Should I even bother looking into a little ceremony for us to renew vows or is that incredibly cheesy and a waste of money?
here ya go. just have fun with it.

I've done it. My wife and I got tattoos, rented a limo, went to the Little Church of the West fpr our 10th anniversary and had a blast. Was a cool experience and they did a very nice job with it. I recommend it.

Very classy.

Okay so July is approaching and in my readings online I've come across a few things to share and have a few questions to ask...

SHARE:

Apparently Tryst has some unadvertised specials on Thursday Nights. Bottle of Goose & Bottle of Moet for $300... or 2 bottles of Goose for $495, OR, 2goose/2moet for $600. Obviously this is with a table. Looks like ~1 goose per 3 guys... 4 if you're generous with a host tip. Text Bobby Yeadon 708.714.0280.

SHARE:
Daylight (new ultra pool at Mandalay Bay) holds 5000 folks and looks sick. The Light (or just Light) is the new nightclub at Mandalay Bay that also just opened and features a collaboration with Cirque De Soleil for arial entertainment during DJ sets. Early reviews are the ambiance is off the charts and is now best in Vegas.

ASK:
Staying at Palms... curious about what kinds of limits for Craps/Blackjack we can expect to see there on the weekend? Also any suggestions on decent places we might find $5 (or even $10) Craps on the strip? Used to have OSheas and Bills as a go to but those are no longer with us (RIP). Figured I'd check with you guys.

ASK:
Looking for good bars / lounges to hit around the strip that won't involve crazy lines or covers at night, but should have a decent mix/mingle scene. Some that have been thrown out to me in the past have been: Chandelier Bar, Hyde (before 10:30), Mix, Lilly, Any Bar in Cosmopolitan, Monte Carlo Pub, Todd English Pub, Carnival Court (eh?)...

ASK:
Looks like we're doing N9NE (Prixe Fixe) on Thursday Night as a kick off dinner but I'm looking for a couple dining options that might be fun/solid out on the strip for the next two nights. Looking for something reasonable (30-50 head) on these. Looks like late night eats will be provided by Earl of Sandwich at the Palms at least one or two of the nights.

ASK:
Leaning toward Sapphire over Rhino due to bottle specials (more likely to get B2G2 bottles or somesuch for our group)... I know most folks scream that Rhino is THE game in town but Sapphire seems fairly well regarded as a "runner up" and is supposedly bigger. Any feedback from you guys on that? Our guys just aren't really "mongers" so the shake joint experience is more likely to be a hit if we treat it as a "hang out with some bottles and get blasted while flirting with the gals and getting an occasional dance" instead of "lets go huddle up and spend half the time in the back room". I know the deal with calling and getting a limo to avoid cover and #### like that.

Looks like we're considering WET, Marquee Day Club, and Daylight for Saturday afternoon pool party...
